Pyrrolidine From N-Alkyl-N-Chloroureas (Abstract), George H. Coleman, Glen Alliger Jan 1941

Pyrrolidine From N-Alkyl-N-Chloroureas (Abstract), George H. Coleman, Glen Alliger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Previous work in this laboratory has shown that when N-n-buty 1-N -chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide, N-n-butyl-N-chloroacetamide, or N-n-butyl-N-chloropropionamide is dissolved in sulfuric acid and heated, ring closure occurs with the formation of pyrrolidine in good yields. It was thought that N, N'-di-n-butyl-N, N'- dichlorourea might react in a similar manner. This was found to be the case. When this compound was dissolved in 95 per cent sulfuric acid and heated for a period of one hour at 120-130° C. pyrrolidine was formed in yields of 50 to 55 per cent. Under similar conditions N, N-dimethyl-N'-n-butyl-N'-chlorourea gave pyrrolidine in yields of 5 to 10 …

Action Of Thionyl Chloride On Urethanes (Abstract), H. B. Freyermuth, L. Chas. Raiford Jan 1941

Action Of Thionyl Chloride On Urethanes (Abstract), H. B. Freyermuth, L. Chas. Raiford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Raiford and Shelton [J. Org. Chem., 4, 207 (1939)] found that hot pyridine causes 2-carbophenoxyamino-4-methy 1-6-bromophenyl p-tolylsulfonate to lose phenol and give a "condensation product" which was found to be a 1,3- derivative of uretedione (uretidone). This type of derivative was also obtained by Warren and Wilson [Ber., 68, 957 (1935) J by the action of thionyl chloride on phenylurethane. But it has now been found that the last-named reaction is specific for phenylure thane. When the phenyl radical contains a "negative" substituent, thionyl chloride causes no action after five hours refluxing. If the substituent is alkyl the treatment causes …

Measurement Of Adsorption Isotherms For Mixed Vapors, H. H. Rowley, W. B. Innes Jan 1941

Measurement Of Adsorption Isotherms For Mixed Vapors, H. H. Rowley, W. B. Innes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A great deal of work has been done in the measurement of adsorption isotherms of pure gases and vapors, but very little of the measurement of adsorption isotherms of mixed gases or vapors and much of this has been unintentional, being due to impurities in the adsorbate. Papers dealing with measurements of this type include those of Richardson and Woodhouse (2) and Bakr and King. (3) The method of Bakr and King has the objection that each experiment yields an isolated value. Richardson's and Woodhouse’s method requires extensive gas analysis and yields an isotherm in which the composition of the …

A Method Of Maintaining The Proper Copper Concentration In The Treatment Of Water, O. R. Sweeney, O. G. Fife Jan 1941

A Method Of Maintaining The Proper Copper Concentration In The Treatment Of Water, O. R. Sweeney, O. G. Fife

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When water is impounded in a reservoir it usually becomes infested with algae. 'While not poisonous many of these algae impart disagreeable odors or tastes to the water, making it undesirable for drinking purposes. When the Croton dam was built as a part of the New York City water supply system, the water in the reservoir behind it became contaminated with algae. Upon the recommendation of Karl F. Kellerman, whose father, Professor Kellerman of Ohio State University, first noted the toxic effect of copper on algae, the water was treated with copper sulfate. This was effective and is being used …

A Rapid Method Of Correcting Fuel Value Determinations Using The Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter, Herbert T. Bates Jan 1941

A Rapid Method Of Correcting Fuel Value Determinations Using The Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter, Herbert T. Bates

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In making fuel value determinations with the oxygen bomb calorimeter it is necessary to correct the observed fuel value by subtracting the heat of combustion of the fuse wire and the heats of formation of the acids present after combustion. Nitric and sulfuric acids are formed by the following reactions which are not possible in furnace combustion.
