The Determination Of Small Amounts Of Trichloroethylene, Lionel K. Arnold, E. Graham Hollowell Jan 1947

The Determination Of Small Amounts Of Trichloroethylene, Lionel K. Arnold, E. Graham Hollowell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In research studies on the extraction of soybean oil by trichloroethylene it became necessary to determine small amounts of the solvent in the oil. For amounts above 10 percent trichloroethylene the simplest and best method for control purposes is by means of a specific gravity determination. Measamer (3) has shown that the trichloroethylene may be steam-distilled from the oil and weighed or measured. Three percent trichloroethylene in soybean oil may be determined with a maximum error of 10 percent. Greater accuracy should be possible in solutions containing more of the solvent. For amounts above 10 percent the method is more …

The American Egret In Iowa, James Hodges Jan 1947

The American Egret In Iowa, James Hodges

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An Iowa bird which has received state wide attention during the last few years from both ornithologists and non-ornithologists is the beautiful American Egret (Casmerodius albus egretta). The American Egret may be called a "bird with a history" due to the fact of its on and off presence in the state of Iowa. I have felt that there is a need for bringing up to date the American Egret records of now and the past, and so it is with this thought in mind that I have prepared this brief paper. The body of the paper is divided …

A Preliminary Report On The Flora Of Southeastern Iowa - Part I, Charles L. Gilly, Malcom E. Mcdonald Jan 1947

A Preliminary Report On The Flora Of Southeastern Iowa - Part I, Charles L. Gilly, Malcom E. Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While the authors were undergraduate students in the Biology Department at Parsons College, a major part of their duties as departmental assistants was the preparation of a herbarium of southeastern Iowa plants. Extensive collections were made in Jefferson and Van Buren Counties, and some collecting was done in the neighboring counties. The project was begun in the spring of 1933 under the direction of the late Dr. Charles Carter, then Head of the Department of Biology at Parsons College. As originally planned, the scope of the project included the ten southeasternmost counties in the state, but only a few specimens …

The Relation Between Ocular Dominance, Handidness, And Visual Acuity, Edward C. Palmer, Marjorie Seiser, A. R. Lauer Jan 1947

The Relation Between Ocular Dominance, Handidness, And Visual Acuity, Edward C. Palmer, Marjorie Seiser, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is of certain theoretical and academic interest to learn whether persons who are right handed also tend to be right-eyed or visa versa. The question often comes up as to whether one who has marked ocular dominance tends to use the better eye or whether the eye being used most gets weaker or stronger. Data were available that could be analyzed to throw light on these problems which might be formulated into the following questions: 1. Is there a tendency for right-handed persons to be right-eyed and left-handed persons to be left-eyed? 2. Is the dominant eye the strongest …

The Flora Of Iowa - A Progress Report Based On Past Contributions, Charles L. Gilly Jan 1947

The Flora Of Iowa - A Progress Report Based On Past Contributions, Charles L. Gilly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

All one of the basic preliminaries in a plan for the ultimate preparation of a flora of Iowa, a survey of Iowa botanical literature has been undertaken in an attempt to assay the status of our knowledge of the state flora. Three aspects of this knowledge were kept in mind during the literature search: (a) general, regional and county floras, (b) the comparison of areas, and (c) taxonomic treatments of specific families and genera of plants. Only the ferns and the flowering plants were included in this literature survey, the mosses and liverworts having been recently summarized by Conard (1945a, …

The Selection Of Science Students At The College Level, John L. Holmes Jan 1947

The Selection Of Science Students At The College Level, John L. Holmes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In predicting scholarship in college practically every known fact about a student has been studied in an effort to find the variables most predictive of success. Age, height, weight, religion, father's occupation, education of parents, and size of family have been extensively used to predict college success. Prediction through the use of tests has been studied in practically every college from the smallest junior college to the largest universities. The interest, and it has been tremendous, shown in the prediction of college success is closely related to the progress made in devising more accurate measurement devices. Beginning in 1917 with …

Protozoa Of Iowa, Fae M. Shawhan, Leland P. Johnson, Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1947

Protozoa Of Iowa, Fae M. Shawhan, Leland P. Johnson, Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Ten years ago, the authors, while working at the University of Iowa Lakeside Laboratory at Lake Okoboji, compiled a list of Protozoa studied that summer. It was felt such a list could be enlarged upon and become a useful reference for workers in the field of Protozoology. As Protozoa have been identified we have added species from the vicinities of Lakeside Laboratory, Des Moines and Iowa City. Most of these were free living, but we have also included some parasitic forms. In addition we have made some attempt to include those mentioned in readily accessible literature, but no attempt has …

Paraperanema Longicauda, N. G., N. Sp. (Protozoa; Euglenida; Peranemidae), Fae. M. Shawhan, Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1947

Paraperanema Longicauda, N. G., N. Sp. (Protozoa; Euglenida; Peranemidae), Fae. M. Shawhan, Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The flagellate family Peranemidae contains a number of genera which are characterized by the fact that in locomotion the flagellum is held straight anteriorly for about two-thirds of its length and beats only near the tip, thereby giving rise to a smooth "gliding" or "creeping" motion of the organism without rotation or gyration. This type of locomotion is readily noted in the common type genus Peranema. Other characteristics of the genera ordinarily placed in the family are varied (review, Jahn, 1946). Some genera have a rigid body; others are plastic. Some have one or more rod-like structures, the so-called "pharyngeal …
