An Unusually Large Population Of Fish In A Gravel Pit Lake, Kenneth D. Carlander Jan 1951

An Unusually Large Population Of Fish In A Gravel Pit Lake, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lakes in gravel pits are usually relatively unproductive but Ruth's Lake near Marshalltown was found to have a larger fish population than has been reported for any other water, except for carp ponds where the fish are artificially fed. When this lake was treated with rotenone, over 1200 pounds of fish per acre, were collected, compared to the 100 to 400 pounds per acre found in most lakes and ponds (Carlander, 1950).

The Production Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Winnebago County, Lowa, E. L. Kozicky, G. O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall of 1935, the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit inaugurated field investigations on the ring-necked pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, on the Winnebago Research Area, sections 9-12, 13-16, and 21-24, Eden Township, Winnebago County. Early investigations (Green, 1938) were centered around winter mortality of pheasants and the improvement of habitat to alleviate winter losses. In 1939-41 intensive investigations were shifted to the nesting and production of the ring-necked pheasant on a 1520-acre plot lying within sections 13, 14, 15, 23 and 24 (Baskett, 1947). Although the pheasants were increasing in numbers during 1939 and 1940, in 1941 and accelerated …

A Search For The Natural Vectors Of Avian Malaria In Iowa, With Notes On Other Mosquito Parasites, Jean L. Laffoon Jan 1951

A Search For The Natural Vectors Of Avian Malaria In Iowa, With Notes On Other Mosquito Parasites, Jean L. Laffoon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study of avian malaria has received much attention in recent years because of the recognition that knowledge concerning it is often very helpful in the understanding of human malaria. While many investigators have dissected wild Anopheles mosquitoes in a search for the vectors of human malaria and culicine mosquitoes for the vectors of human filariasis, there apparently has been little effort to find the natural vectors of bird malaria, although numerous species of mosquitoes have been shown to be capable of transmitting the disease under laboratory conditions.

Vitamin B12 Content Of Kidneys As Determined By Different Bioassay Procedures, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas Jan 1951

Vitamin B12 Content Of Kidneys As Determined By Different Bioassay Procedures, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The existence of vitamin B12, often designated the antipernicious anemia or animal protein factor, as another member of the expanding family of vitamins is well established. As implied from its nomenclature, it belongs to the water soluble B-vitamins, but unlike most other vitamins in this group its chemical structure is unknown. Its nutritional importance to man, his monogastric farm animals and his poultry is recognized. For the present, at least, the supply consists primarily of concentrates. It is not to be inferred that crystalline B12 is unavailable. On the contrary, however, the supply is very limited and …

Making Accident Statistics More Meaningful, Pearl W. Mcmurray, A. R. Lauer Jan 1951

Making Accident Statistics More Meaningful, Pearl W. Mcmurray, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

With the improvement in driver licensing and highway policing systems throughout the country there has arisen the need for better reporting and analysis of accidents and accident trends. Many states have inaugurated standard IBM equipment and follow a more or less uniform system of recording and punching accident data on cards for machine analysis. In most respects the trends in this development have been very desirable but standardization is sometimes a virtue which may occasionally boomerang. After a system is once established it takes a great deal of effort to make a change and changes are frequently desirable. Standardization may …

Theorem On The Zeros Of Polynomials, Wm. J. Stoner Jan 1951

Theorem On The Zeros Of Polynomials, Wm. J. Stoner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A simple method of finding limits for the absolute values of the zeros of polynomials will be given in this paper. The radius of a circle about the origin in the complex plane will be found from the coefficient of the polynomial such that all the zeros will lie on or within this circle. For certain polynomials a second circle will be found such that the zeros will lie on or outside this circle. In finding these circles the following well-known theorem of Rouché is used. Rouché's Theorem is very useful. By means of it the fundamental theorem of algebra …

More Mixed Colonies In Ants, R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At the meeting of the Academy two years ago (King, '49) nine mixed colonies of ants containing Formica reflexa and Formica fusca were reported. Seven of these had failed to survive the winter following their discovery; of the other two, found in 1948, only one survived the winter of 48-49 and contained only F. reflexa in 1949. This pure colony of F. reflexa, the only one ever reported, was deserted by the early summer of 1950. Two new mixed colonies were found in 1949 near the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Dickinson County, Iowa: only one of these survived the winter …

Analysis Of The 1948, 1949, And 1950 Waterfowl Kill Samples In Iowa, James G. Sieh Jan 1951

Analysis Of The 1948, 1949, And 1950 Waterfowl Kill Samples In Iowa, James G. Sieh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The State Conservation Commission has investigated the waterfowl kill in Iowa during each open season since 1948. This study has established the species composition of the total waterfowl bag taken in Iowa during the open season, and the percentage of each species taken. In addition, the number of hours required by the average. Iowa waterfowl hunter to take a duck or goose has been determined for each of the three open seasons. An analysis of the data for these three years is in order.

A Cyano Compound Related To Acetylcholine, Calvin Hanna Jan 1951

A Cyano Compound Related To Acetylcholine, Calvin Hanna

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent years there has developed a keen interest in the limits through which chemical constitutional changes in biological potent drugs may be carried without great loss of their characteristic pharmacological activity. In this regard the present study concerns itself with the effect of replacing the acetate by a cyano group in acetylcholine.

Sketches Of Little Known Iowa Ornithologists, James Hodges Jan 1951

Sketches Of Little Known Iowa Ornithologists, James Hodges

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is not a rare event when one is making a detailed study of ornithology to come upon the names of older students of the subject that are apparently unknown to the ornithological public. Their only contribution to the subject may have been a regional or local list published in some obscure periodical or a set of unpublished journals kept over a period of years. It is my purpose to make an attempt to fill in some of these "unknowns" in our knowledge of historical ornithology. This paper contains three biographies: J. H. Paarmann; Hugo H. Schroder; Burtis H. Wilson.

Studies On Fungal Membranes, Lawrence Kaplan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study represents an attempt to apply established methods of detection for cellulose and chitin as structural materials in the mem· branes of a group of organisms consisting, for the greater part, of higher fungi. These methods have been combined with purification procedures resulting in a technique which has not been used previously on so broadly representative a group of higher fungi.

Fungi Of Two Forest Soils Of Johnson County, Willard A. Taber Jan 1951

Fungi Of Two Forest Soils Of Johnson County, Willard A. Taber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was noted that the undergrowth under a stand of Robinia Pseudo-Acacia was sparse as compared with that under an adjoining area dominated by elms, oaks and hickories. It was thought that perhaps this difference might be reflected in the fungal population of the two soils. The soil under R. Pseudo-Acacia was found to be loosely packed, moist and to have a pH 6.89-7.00 for both soil and overlying humus. The mosaic pattern of the trees did not seem sufficiently dense to limit significantly the amount of light reaching the ground line. Therefore it was conjectured that the sparse vegetation …

An Analysis Of Reading Improvement, Lewis R. Vavra Jan 1951

An Analysis Of Reading Improvement, Lewis R. Vavra

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been established by different investigators that a positive correlation exists between intelligence and reading speed. Humber (1944) found a correlation of +.76 between reading rate and ACE scores of University of Minnesota students. A study by Anderson and Dearborn (1941) shows that reading ability and college achievement are often closely related. Data were available from several classes of a reading improvement course, and it was considered worthwhile to analyze the data to ascertain which decile groups were profiting most by training. The fundamental hypothesis set up for testing in this study may be stated as follows: There is …

A Progress Report On The Study Of Perch Movement In Lake Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa, Douglas G. Brown, Walter G. Rosen Jan 1951

A Progress Report On The Study Of Perch Movement In Lake Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa, Douglas G. Brown, Walter G. Rosen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Until recently, very little quantitative work has been done on the daily or short term movements of fresh water fish. Investigations by Hasler and Bardach (1949) have verified the existence of a diurnal movement of the yellow perch (Perca flavescens Mitchill) in Lake Mendota, Wisconsin. The present paper reports the results obtained from an investigation of the movements of yellow perch in Lake Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa. The investigation was undertaken in the summer of 1950 at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, and was primarily an attempt to ascertain: 1) do these fish undergo a diurnal movement, 2) is there …

Factors Influencing The Extent Of Pulmonary Hemorrhage Following Explosive Decompression, H. H. Keasling, Calvin Hanna Jan 1951

Factors Influencing The Extent Of Pulmonary Hemorrhage Following Explosive Decompression, H. H. Keasling, Calvin Hanna

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent years there has been a great increase in interest in the effects of explosive decompression, primarily because this phenomenon represents a major hazard of high altitude flight. Majovski et. al. (1944) in their studies concerning the effect of vitamin-P-like materials on the incidence of lung hemorrhage, noted that the presence or absence of food in the stomach seemed to alter the nature of the response. Later Kibrick and Goldfarb (1944) reported that 20-27 hour fasting markedly reduced the incidence of lung hemorrhage compared with fed controls. In a previous report from this laboratory, Bass et. al. …

An Empirical Study Of The Effect Of Normalizing Data [Abstract], C. C. Collins, A. R. Lauer Jan 1951

An Empirical Study Of The Effect Of Normalizing Data [Abstract], C. C. Collins, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of normalization of data is frequently discussed in the literature but few studies have been made to determine the actual effect produced when normalized and non-normalized data are compared. In this study two types of distributions were studied in which correlations are made between certain data with and without correction for skewness and kurtosis. The correlations, plots and curves of the material, and the changes created will be presented and discussed. It would seem that in most cases the benefits of normalizing data are hardly worth while since curvilinearity and breaks in data induce sources of error which …

Seeds Of Bromus Secalinus And Commutatus, Duane Isely Jan 1951

Seeds Of Bromus Secalinus And Commutatus, Duane Isely

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seeds of Bromus commutatus Schrad. and B. secalinus L. frequently occur together as admixtures in agricultural seed. The latter is designated as noxious by seed laws of a number of states while, with one exception, the former is not. Hence the accurate diagnosis of these seeds becomes a matter of considerable importance to analysts and seed control officials. In a recent investigation of the seed characters of weedy and cultivated species of Bromus, lsely, West, and Pohl, (in press) concluded that the seeds of these species, although frequently confused by seed analysts, could usually be distinguished. They emphasized consideration …

Age And Sex Difference In Performance In The O'Connor Blocks, R. N. Kjerland Jan 1951

Age And Sex Difference In Performance In The O'Connor Blocks, R. N. Kjerland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Kean and O'Connor (1927) reported the use of the O'Connor Blocks as a measure of mechanical aptitude. A study of the data indicated that superior performance was associated with a type of analysis characteristic of engineers and mechanics. In recent years the test has been used to some extent in the field of driver training and driver aptitude measurement. A study reported by Miller and Lauer (1946) with a group consisting largely of Oriental students gave low positive correlation with driving performance. The criterion used was not as reliable as the experimenters desired.

Some Social Correlates Of Intellectual Changes, Dale Ortmeyer, William A. Owens Jr. Jan 1951

Some Social Correlates Of Intellectual Changes, Dale Ortmeyer, William A. Owens Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As a result of considerable psychological investigation in the field of individual differences, Tyler (3) and others have stated that social factors, such as amount of education, are related to mental abilities. This statement suggested the possibility that social factors may be related to changes in mental abilities over a chronological age span. The knowledge of social correlates, if any, of the changes in mental abilities is an important preliminary step for further research designed to determine causation. Due to the lack of information in the literature concerning this relationship, it was believed worthwhile to conduct a longitudinal study directly …
