The Validity Of A Pencil And Paper Version Of The O'Connor Block Test [Abstract], J. J. Phillips, M. C. Green, R. N. Kjerland Jan 1952

The Validity Of A Pencil And Paper Version Of The O'Connor Block Test [Abstract], J. J. Phillips, M. C. Green, R. N. Kjerland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The senior author has previously shown that the O'Connor Block Test requires at least four time-limit trials of two minutes each to obtain a reliability of .80. A total of six trials are required to bring the reliability up to .85. If the number of subjects to be tested is large this procedure requires a large amount of the examiner's time and somewhat limits the usefulness of the test.

Congenital Abnormalities Associated With Vitamin E Malnutrition, Byron H. Thomas, Dorothy Wei Cheng Jan 1952

Congenital Abnormalities Associated With Vitamin E Malnutrition, Byron H. Thomas, Dorothy Wei Cheng

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Congenital abnormalities are known to occur occasionally in man and farm livestock, and frequently in laboratory animals subjected to certain types of experimentation. A high percentage of the cases are fatal to the young depending on the nature and severity of the complications. In many instances death of the affected young occurs during pregnancy or parturition. Should the feti survive parturition death usually follows shortly thereafter. Extended survival occurs in a small percentage of young and these are mildly to severely handicapped in one or more of a multiplicity of ways. There are many causes of congenital abnormalities. Some are …

Enzyme Inhibitors: Inhibitors Of Succinic Dehydrogenase In Mitotically Active And Blocked Embryos, Joseph Hall Bodine, Kiao-Hung Lu, William West Jan 1952

Enzyme Inhibitors: Inhibitors Of Succinic Dehydrogenase In Mitotically Active And Blocked Embryos, Joseph Hall Bodine, Kiao-Hung Lu, William West

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The enzyme inhibitors, malonate, iodoacetate, oxalacetate, R.N.A. and D.N.A. have been applied to the succinic dehydrogenase systems of the intact and homogenized embryos of the grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis. All inhibit succinic dehydrogenase except R.N.A. and D.N.A. Malonate seems most specific in its action and seems to behave as an "ideal inhibitor".

Preliminary Studies Of The Moody And Galva Soil Series Of Northwestern Iowa, H. D. Foth, F. F. Riecken Jan 1952

Preliminary Studies Of The Moody And Galva Soil Series Of Northwestern Iowa, H. D. Foth, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent studies in the midwest have confirmed a relationship between the thickness and distribution of the loess and the morphological, chemical and physical properties of soils developed from loess. In southwestern Iowa studies by Hutton (2) and Ulrich (6) showed increased differentiation of soils as the distance from the loess source increased and the thickness of the loess decreased. Hunter (1) reported similar relationships between the properties of the loess and soils developed in southeastern Iowa. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study regarding the possibility of similar relationships in northwestern Iowa. Profile sites were selected on loess …

Pumping Tests On Wells In Iowa, Russell M. Jeffords Jan 1952

Pumping Tests On Wells In Iowa, Russell M. Jeffords

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A systematic investigation of geology and ground-water resources of Iowa has been carried on for many years by the State Geological Survey, more recently in cooperation with the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior. The purpose of the current study is to collect and analyze data on the geology and on the occurrence, quantity, quality, and development of ground water throughout Iowa; to assist individuals and municipal, State, and Federal groups in the solution of problems relating to water supply from wells and springs; and to prepare for publication or other distribution such information as is of value …
