Macropseudogynes (Or Pterergates?) In Formica Fossaceps Buren (Formicidae), R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Large worker ants with vestigial wings were found in certain colonies of Formica fossaceps Buren at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory near Milford, Iowa. This paper deals with one of these colonies (49F), found on the Laboratory grounds, June 15. 1949; vestigial winged workers were present in considerable numbers in this colony. Extensive collections were made: in 1949, a total of 1414 workers, 117 (8.3%) with vestigial wings; in 1950, 9 males and 539 workers, 32 (5.9%) with vestigial wings; the colony was not found in 1951. The total number of workers was 1953, of which 119 (7.6%) had vestigial …

Fungicolous Fungi From Iowa, Joseph C. Gilman, Lois H. Tiffany

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In studying the parasitic fungi of Iowa many species of fungi associated with other fungi have been encountered, some of which have not been reported from the state previously. Hence, the following list has been compiled and the commoner species illustrated.

The Effect Of Various Metabolic Inhibitors On The Resting Potential Of Frog Muscle, Joab Klapp Anderson Jan 1952

The Effect Of Various Metabolic Inhibitors On The Resting Potential Of Frog Muscle, Joab Klapp Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is generally known that when the surface of a cell is injured, one is able to measure a potential difference between the site of injury and the intact surface of that cell. The P.D. observed in such instances are of the order of 50-90 mv. The injury is believed to serve as the point of electrical connection between the inside and the outside of the cell, and that the potential exists across the plasma membrance or boundary of the cell.

Thermodynamic Evidence For Internal Bonding In Serum Albumin, Charles Tanford Jan 1952

Thermodynamic Evidence For Internal Bonding In Serum Albumin, Charles Tanford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Much of the fascination of protein chemistry lies in the individuality of members of the protein family. All proteins consist of chains of amino-acid residues, held together by peptide bonds. Protein molecules, however, are frequently rigid compact units, rather than extended chains. Such a structure must be maintained by secondary bonding, and it is probable that at least a part of the individuality of proteins is due to the nature of this secondary bonding. (Fibrous proteins, which do exist as extended chains of helices, and which do not show as much individuality as globular proteins, are excluded from the present …

The Raman Effect Of Cis And Trans-Decalin, Geo. Glockler, Jo-Yun Tung Jan 1952

The Raman Effect Of Cis And Trans-Decalin, Geo. Glockler, Jo-Yun Tung

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several of the physical properties of liquid cis-decalin seem to change at about 55°C. The surface tension-temperature curve for example shows a change in slope at about this temperature. It was thought of interest to study the Raman effect of the two isomers as a function of temperature in order to find out if the scattering power of the two isomers shows different behavior over the temperature range 25°-75°C. It appears that the scattering of trans-decalin remains about the same over this temperature range while the cisisomer shows increased scattering at the higher temperature. Some ideas are expressed that might …

Properties Of Soils Of The Outwash Terraces Of Wisconsin Age In Iowa, C. Lynn Coultas, Ralph J. Mccracken Jan 1952

Properties Of Soils Of The Outwash Terraces Of Wisconsin Age In Iowa, C. Lynn Coultas, Ralph J. Mccracken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For adequate classification and mapping of soils it is necessary to learn as much as possible about their chemical and physical properties, their age, and the parent materials or geological materials from which they have formed. Soil properties which vary with age, texture (the particle size distribution), and lithology have significant bearing, for example, on use and management suggestions, corn suitability ratings, and tax assessment value of soils. Thus it becomes necessary to discriminate age differences and significant textural and lithologic variations in the materials being studied. In the case of most Iowa soils, these problems are held in common …

Property Variations In The Peorian Loess Of Southwestern Iowa, D.T. Davidson, R. L. Handy Jan 1952

Property Variations In The Peorian Loess Of Southwestern Iowa, D.T. Davidson, R. L. Handy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is widely recognized in Iowa that there are not enough economically available supplies of sand, gravel, and rock in the state to meet the road building needs of the present and future. While certain counties have been favored more than others with aggregate deposits, this statement applies to the entire state, if a long-range view point is taken. Many other sections of the United States, as well as many foreign countries, are faced with a similar shortage. A solution to this problem is to learn how to treat or process readily available materials to increase their all-weather stability for …

Sex Differences And Reliabilities On Two Tests Of Distance Judgment, James A. Stone, Lewis R. Vavra Jan 1952

Sex Differences And Reliabilities On Two Tests Of Distance Judgment, James A. Stone, Lewis R. Vavra

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are relatively few studies on distance judgment cited in the psychological literature. Allgaier (1) developed a test of depth perception involving movable pegs. He found that color and size of the pegs had little effect on judgments. However, induced visual defects and astigmatism materially decrease the ability to judge distance. Visual acuity seems to be the only factor reported which is significantly correlated with distance judgment.

A Possible Explanation Of The Gel-Sol Changes In Amoeboid Movement, Based On The Muscle Contraction Theories Of Szent-Gyorgyi, Eugene C. Bovee Jan 1952

A Possible Explanation Of The Gel-Sol Changes In Amoeboid Movement, Based On The Muscle Contraction Theories Of Szent-Gyorgyi, Eugene C. Bovee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The possibility that amoeboid movement and muscle contraction may be very similar and, perhaps, identical physico-chemical phenomena has occurred to numerous investigators during the past century. Ecker (1849) may have been the first to express this idea in the literature in terming muscle "differentiated contractile substance" and sarcode "undifferentiated contractile substance." Only recently, however, has evidence accumulated from the fields of biochemistry and physiology which bids fair to establish the reality of that possibility.
