Vocational Interests Of High School Seniors In Cedar Falls, Iowa, Donald L. Hanson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The primary purposes of this study are to (1) discover the vocational interests of the high school seniors in Cedar Falls, and (2) determine the influence of various factors on their vocational choices. Although it is not a purpose of this study, it is expected that a basis for follow-up studies of this same group will be provided. This study does not attempt to evaluate the schools' curriculum in view of their vocational assistance to students. Neither will it attempt to evaluate the occupational opportunities of the city when compared to students' vocational interests. But, through this study, the situation …

Tonal Balance Within The Concert Band: An Objective Approach To Augment Subjective Theories, John L. Evenson
Tonal Balance Within The Concert Band: An Objective Approach To Augment Subjective Theories, John L. Evenson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The school band has become one of the foremost means of evaluating the program of music education in the public school. Although a school music program has many assets which cannot possibly be made articulate to the administration, school board, and public through a performing unit such as the concert band, the music educator is under pressure to produce fine results in his performing unit, and should strive to make every appearance of the group as musically perfect as possible. Good tonal balance is essential in obtaining this result.
The Status Of Certain Aspects Of Guidance In One Hundred Seventy-Three Selected Iowa Public High Schools, Eldon Merle Gade
The Status Of Certain Aspects Of Guidance In One Hundred Seventy-Three Selected Iowa Public High Schools, Eldon Merle Gade
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Despite the fact that there has developed an increased awareness of the need for organized guidance in Iowa, far too little has been done about obtaining a comprehensive picture of the status of guidance in the public schools. Information I received from the State Supervisor of Guidance Education Department of Public Instruction, indicated that no comprehensive guidance study of a representative nature had ever been conducted in the public high schools of Iowa. The writer contends that this paucity of information about guidance in Iowa's public high schools constitutes a very serious impediment to the improvement of guidance. If Iowa …

A Study Of Small Business Record-Keeping Practices In Florence, Arizona, With Implications For Revision Of Bookkeeping Instruction, Carlton Vae Geiler
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Students have a right to expect the high school bookkeeping course to aid them in taking their places in the business world of today. Our nation's democratic and economic ideals have long included those of individual initiative and the ability to care for oneself and his family in so far as he is capable. This philosophy is exemplified in the fact that most of our daily business transactions are carried on through small retail business concerns owned and operated primarily by individuals and partners.

Additions To The Flora Of Cedar County, Iowa, M. J. Fay, R. F. Thorne
Additions To The Flora Of Cedar County, Iowa, M. J. Fay, R. F. Thorne
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A survey of the vascular plants of Cedar County, Iowa, was made by the senior author during the growing season of 1950. A previous paper (Fay, 1952) presented an annotated list of 775 species found in the area studied. Subsequent collecting trips by the authors of this paper have resulted in the discovery of additional species. Several misidentifications caused errors in the previous account; these are corrected here. Introduced species are marked by an asterisk. The present paper brings up to date the number of species known to occur in Cedar County. It also describes the various ecological habitats of …

Evolution Of The Level Lnterfluvial Divides On The Kansan Till Plain In Iowa And Missouri, W. D. Shrader, K. M. Hussey
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this paper is to discuss and evaluate various alternative hypotheses concerning the evolution of the level interfluvial divides on the Kansan Till plain in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. About four-fifths of the plain is dissected (3), but the undissected remnants have an almost flat surface. In contrast to this the undissected portion of the much younger surfaces of the Mankato and Cary till plains have an undulating topography with numerous closed depressions and isolated low knolls.
Training Tv Teachers, Martin F. Fritz, John A. Greenlee
Training Tv Teachers, Martin F. Fritz, John A. Greenlee
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The high hope that is being placed in television as an educational medium makes it desirable that we examine the training needed to fit teachers to this medium. Many questions can be asked such as, can only certain persons teach successfully by TV? How long does it take to train a TV teacher? Is a very special kind of training necessary? What are the peculiarities of TV a teacher must recognize? In the past several years, considerable information has accumulated on how to teach by television. Most of this information is empirical but some has resulted from situations involving a …

Synthesis Of 2,4-Heptadiene, Fred W. Raths, R. L. Shriner
Synthesis Of 2,4-Heptadiene, Fred W. Raths, R. L. Shriner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
2,4-Heptadiene can exist in four isomeric cis-trans forms; a fact which probably accounts for the different physical constants reported in the literature. The present synthesis involved a high temperature pyrolysis as the final step, in the hope that only one isomer would be formed under these conditions.
