A Modulated-Beam Microdensitometer, K. E. Mcculloh, William C. Harris
A Modulated-Beam Microdensitometer, K. E. Mcculloh, William C. Harris
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The employment of barrier layer cells in microdensitometers designed for use in spectrochemical analysis has found considerable favor, as indicated by the fact that this type of photosensitive element has been incorporated into three commercially available instruments: the Vincent and Sawyer (1) microphotometer manufactured by the Leeds and Northrup Company, and the Jarrel-Ash and Hilger instruments. Sensitive galvanometers are employed in all three of these densitometers. There seems to be no case in which such an instrument has been equipped with an amplifier in order to improve the precision of the higher density readings, presumably because the low internal resistance …
Synthesis Of Estrogenic Isoflavone Derivatives, Lester Yoder, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs
Synthesis Of Estrogenic Isoflavone Derivatives, Lester Yoder, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Natural estrogens in plants have assumed considerable importance since the demonstration of their presence in subterranean clover by Bennetts (1) in 1946 and the identification of the isoflavone, genistein (V, 4', 5, 7-OH) as the probable substance responsible for some of the estrogenic activity by Curnow and Bennetts (2) in 1952. Earlier the isoflavones were found in soybean meal as genistein glucoside (3) (5), methyl genistein (V, 6',5, 7,-OH,8- CH3), isogenistein (V,6',5,7-OH), tatoin (V,4',5-OH,8-CH3) ( 4), daidzein (V,4',7-OH) and formononetin (V,4'-OCH3,7-OH) (5). Furthermore the isoflavone biochanin A (V, 4'-OCH3, 5, 7-OH) was …
A Study Of Student Achievement And Mortality In College Mathematics, Fred Robertson
A Study Of Student Achievement And Mortality In College Mathematics, Fred Robertson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This study was undertaken to obtain a clearer insight into the achievements and the mortality of entering freshmen in college mathematics. In the fall of 1952, one thousand and four (1004) students (nearly all freshmen) enrolled in the college algebra course at The Iowa State College. This study records their successes and failures as of the end of the winter quarter of 1954. Then they had had three quarters in their freshman year, (a summer quarter in 1953) and two quarters in the 1953-54 school year. For instructional purposes each of the 1004 entering freshmen were assigned to one of …
Types Of Functions, Newton B. Smith
Types Of Functions, Newton B. Smith
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Real functions of a real variable may be classified according as to whether or not they are continuous, neighborly, cliquish, or discriminative. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these properties, and to discover how they are related. In this paper X denotes the real continuum E1 or an interval, open or closed, contained in E1. The function f (x) is a function from the set X to a subset of E1. N denotes an arbitrary open interval in E1, and N (x) an arbitrary open interval containing the point x.
Exploratory Studies In The Evaluation Of Educational Telecasts, Sam L. Becker
Exploratory Studies In The Evaluation Of Educational Telecasts, Sam L. Becker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Throughout the country today a new electronic dimension is being added to many classrooms-television. A tremendous amount of effort, time, and money is being spent to produce and transmit educational television programs to the schools and it appears that this output has not yet even approached its peak. In view of this fact, one would expect to find a somewhat proportionate amount of research being carried out to evaluate television as an educational tool so that it can be determined how it can be maximally effective. Such, though, is not the case. There is a surprising dearth of such research. …
Studies In Intolerance Of Ambiguity, Ii: The Effects Of "Set" On The Decision-Location Test, Eugene E. Levitt
Studies In Intolerance Of Ambiguity, Ii: The Effects Of "Set" On The Decision-Location Test, Eugene E. Levitt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Recent interest among personality theorists has centered around the proposed variable tolerance-intolerance of ambiguity. Tolerance-intolerance of ambiguity or simply intolerance of ambiguity as it is commonly called, was put forth by Frenkel-Brunswik as the unifying concept of the syndrome of the so-called authoritarian personality (Frenkel-Brunswik, 19+9). According to Frenkel-Brunswik, the individual who is intolerant of ambiguity tends to use "black-white" solutions of problems, both cognitive and interpersonal, and to subdivide the phenomena he encounters into strict categories and dichotomies rather than to view them as continua. He has a tendency to avoid ambiguous and unstructured situations, but upon finding himself …
Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of A Test Of Mechanical Ingenuity, Harold Martinek
Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of A Test Of Mechanical Ingenuity, Harold Martinek
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There are many phases of industry that need the maximal use of high level personnel. Perhaps the most important of these is engineering, particularly machine design engineering. Although there are many machine designers, only a small percentage can be described as truly creative; these few individuals, however, are among the most important men in industry whether the nation is at war or at peace. Some men may have been "born creative", but they probably did not reach their maximum usefulness until they had received experience or training or both. If industry could predict who is potentially creative without waiting some …
Apparatus For Measurement Of Reaction Time To Complex Differential Stimuli Presented As A Standard Rate In Nonrepetitive Series, Robert G. Pfefferkorn
Apparatus For Measurement Of Reaction Time To Complex Differential Stimuli Presented As A Standard Rate In Nonrepetitive Series, Robert G. Pfefferkorn
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The development of reaction time measurement methodology from the experimentations of Donders has been distinguished primarily by inventions of more accurate and reliable measuring instruments (5). Methodology and content have been changed but little and in fact have been simplified and condensed from the elaborate formulations of early psychophysics. On logical grounds speed of reaction has been postulated as an important trait positively related to the successful performance of certain psychomotor skills, e.g., driving a motor vehicle. However, experimental evidence to support this hypothesis has been inconsistent. Mostly the relationships to such performance have been found to be low. One …
Changes In Position Of Presentation As Related To Perceptual Efficiency In Stimulus Identification, Robert G. Pfefferkorn, A. R. Lauer
Changes In Position Of Presentation As Related To Perceptual Efficiency In Stimulus Identification, Robert G. Pfefferkorn, A. R. Lauer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Little experimentation has been undertaken in the area of perception of variously positioned geometrical figures. One study concerning symmetrical figures has been reported by Ganguli (1). He investigated the problem of determination of the optimal "break" in a circle which will be perceived as a "whole" through closure tendency. The incomplete circles in his experiment ranged from openings of 0° to 45°. Individual differences were found in threshold which varied as a function of the position of the gap. Threshold values were greater for lower gapped positions than for upper gapped positions. In a more recent study by Postman and …
A Comparison Of Absolute Overlearning On The Retention Of Fast And Slow Learners, Albert R. Rustebakke, Robert Kreider, Charles F. Haner
A Comparison Of Absolute Overlearning On The Retention Of Fast And Slow Learners, Albert R. Rustebakke, Robert Kreider, Charles F. Haner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Various studies on the relation of speed of learning to retention have been reported (2) (3) (4). Many such studies are subject to the criticism that the degree of learning of fast and slow learners was not equated. Gillette (1), using the method of "adjusted learning", found that fast learners retained more than slow learners as measured by both recall and relearning. Her study has set the pattern for subsequent investigation. A question may be raised, however, as to whether the degree of learning is actually equated by the method of adjusted learning. The acquisition curve for the fast learner …
Frequency And Types Of Violations Of Iowa Motorists, Elmer B. Siebrecht, Richard Clark Bennett
Frequency And Types Of Violations Of Iowa Motorists, Elmer B. Siebrecht, Richard Clark Bennett
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent year various studies have been made of the personal characteristics and driving habits of motor vehicle operators. Of these perhaps the most extensive is the five-year study being conducted at Iowa State College. One purpose of this study is to determine the effect of training on accidents and violations in relation to age, sex and type of training of drivers. Preliminary reports on certain aspects of the general problem have already been made. From the first sampling made in 1950, some of the published contributions are those of Lauer (2), Lauer and Schumacher (4), Siebrecht (5) and Siebrecht, …
Analysis Of Automobile Accident Trends Of Temporary Nature, Joseph N. Stone
Analysis Of Automobile Accident Trends Of Temporary Nature, Joseph N. Stone
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This study is an attempt to gather statistics relative to the accident situation in Iowa for the month of July, 1953, in order to compare these with other months and other years and to ascertain, if possible, any factors which may have been introduced to account for the unusually large toll. It would be advisable to make comparisons on the basis of numbers and trends but this is beyond the scope of the present study. Some basic facts will be reviewed inferences that may be warranted which may help reduce accidents or at least contribute to clearer thinking in accident …
Some Physical Measurements Of The Bronzed Grackle Roost At Ames, Iowa, John C. W. Bliese
Some Physical Measurements Of The Bronzed Grackle Roost At Ames, Iowa, John C. W. Bliese
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
For at least 30 years, during summer and fall months, the shade trees in residential areas of Ames, Iowa, have been a nightly rendezvous for thousands of bronzed grackles, Quiscalus quiscula, starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, cowbirds, Molothrus ater, and robins, Turdus migratorius. Each evening the birds have come from the surrounding countryside to roost in the city's trees, and each morning they have left to return to their feeding areas. Relatively few of the birds have remained in Ames during the day. It was the writer's privilege to have studied this phenomenon from August, 1949, to November, …
Cover Density Of A City Summer And Fall Bronzed Grackle Roost, John C. W. Bliese
Cover Density Of A City Summer And Fall Bronzed Grackle Roost, John C. W. Bliese
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Ames, Iowa, is one of the many Midwestern cities that have the dubious distinction of having a "blackbird" roost. During the summer and fall months thousands of birds each evening come to roost in the shade trees in· residential areas. Records kept in 1951 (Bliese, 1953a) indicated that roughly 74 per cent of the birds were bronzed grackles, Quiscalus quiscula. Regularly associated with them were about 22 per cent starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, 3 per cent cowbirds, Molothrus ater, and 1 per cent robins, Turdus migratorius. Observations from 1949 to 1952 also revealed that at times purple …
Neotropical Miridae, Lxxiv: Two New Genera Of Cylapinae From Brazil (Hemiptera), Jose C. M. Carvalho
Neotropical Miridae, Lxxiv: Two New Genera Of Cylapinae From Brazil (Hemiptera), Jose C. M. Carvalho
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Two new genera and three new species of Cylapinae from Brazil · are described in this paper. The two Amazonian species were collected during an Expedition undertaken by the author on the headwaters of the Rio Negro. Both these species were found in association with Fulvius quadristillatus (Stäl, 1860), also a Cylapinae, and were feeding on fungi (Auricularia) growing on rotten trees in the forest. Since nymphs were taken it is probable that the species feed and complete their life cycle on this fungus. Once proper collection is made in the tropics the number of species and genera of this …
A Proposed Comparison Of Fall Roadside Pheasant Counts And Flushing Rates, E. L. Kozicky, H. O. Hartley, G. O. Hendrickson
A Proposed Comparison Of Fall Roadside Pheasant Counts And Flushing Rates, E. L. Kozicky, H. O. Hartley, G. O. Hendrickson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although the fall roadside pheasant census (Bennett and Hendrickson, 1938) has reflected the fall pheasant population from an administrative standpoint for the past 17 years within the primary range in Iowa (Kozicky, et al., 1952), there still exist the problems of correlating these roadside counts to actual populations or flushing rates. Inasmuch as we do not have any known method of obtaining exact numbers of birds for a given ·section of land at the present time, we cannot develop a method of interpreting the roadside count as reflecting a mean number of birds per acre in the primary pheasant range …
The Present Status Of Systematic Mammalogy In Iowa With Some Notes On Recent Mammal Collecting Within The State, Lowell S. Miller
The Present Status Of Systematic Mammalogy In Iowa With Some Notes On Recent Mammal Collecting Within The State, Lowell S. Miller
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In this short discussion the author will try to explore the present status of systematic mammalogy in this state and will show by his own trapping results that there is a great deal of work yet to be done. Thomas G. Scott (1937) published a paper entitled "Mammals of Iowa" in the Iowa State College Journal of Science. In the introduction he implies that the purpose of the paper is to stimulate interest in the systematics of mammals in Iowa. In searching through the recent literature on the subject the author has come to the conclusion that it did not …
Blue-Green Algae Control At Storm Lake, Earl T. Rose
Blue-Green Algae Control At Storm Lake, Earl T. Rose
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Heavy growths of blue-green algae are a major factor in limiting recreation at several of Iowa's lakes during the summer. The huge accumulations of these small primitive plants render lakes uninviting for swimming, angling or sight-seeing and when decomposition of the algae occurs putrid odors emanate therefrom creating intolerable situations. Occasionally certain species may become poisonous (Olson, 1951; McCleod and Bandar, 1952; Ingram and Prescott, 1952; Rose, 1953), thus creating the necessity for emergency measures to prevent loss of human life as well as loss of domestic animals and wildlife.

Notes On The Development Of Immature Blackheaded Grosbeaks (Pheucticus Melanocephalus), Henry G. Weston Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
From April to September, 1945, and from April to June, 1946, a field study was undertaken on the natural history of the common black-headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) in the breeding season (Weston, 1947). The following discussion, related to the development of immature birds, covers but one phase of this study. Observations were in Strawberry Canyon, on the campus of the University of California, Alameda County, California. Eight nests were studied in detail, six in 1945 and two in 1946. The usual set of eggs in this species consists of three to four eggs. Occasionally sets of two and …

Transcriptions Of Early Instrumental Music For Brass Ensemble, With A Style Analysis And Suggestions For Modern Use, William Robert Becker
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
With the rapid expansion of instrumental music in both the secondary schools and colleges of this country, there arises a need for more good literature to serve as training material for the smaller groups of the instrumental music programs. In the past, there has been a certain amount of music transcribed for ensemble groups, but a great deal of this transcribing has been done on a commercial basis without an accompanying systematic study of style.

The Changing Status Of The Country Superintendent Of Schools In Iowa, Dwight Gene Bode
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The county superintendent has long been recognized as part of the of the educational organization in the United States. The mixed ancestry of the office of county superintendent has resulted in a position whose functions and responsibilities differ widely from state to state.
The forty-eight states may be grouped into three general categories with reference to the county as a school unit: states having no county school organization, county-unit states, and states in which the county is the intermediate agency. There are nine states having no county school superintendent. Six of the states having no county superintendent are organized in …

A Beginning Class Method For Elementary School Children Of Varied Abilities Playing Heterogeneous Instruments, Frank Peter Comella
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Since the introduction of instrumental music into the public schools there has been a noticeable lack of suitable literature for the beginner at the elementary level in class-type instruction, especially for those groups in which miscellaneous instruments are included and where the players possess a wide range of abilities. Further, the difference in rate of learning among children and the relatively small amount of time which one may justifiably devote to such group serves only to point up the need for music literature arranged and designed especially for the beginning player at the elementary level. It is the purpose of …
