More specifically: (1) to determine through studying the collected data, the areas now being covered in the orientation programs, (2) to report the information being presented to the seventh grad student in the form of written orientation material, and (3) to propose a student orientation program based on the findings of the previous research.
A Resource Unit On Foreign Trade, Wilbur R. Hebbeln
A Resource Unit On Foreign Trade, Wilbur R. Hebbeln
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This volume was written to provide a concise reference on foreign trade while, at the same time retaining the fundamental ideas. It is written primarily for persons who have previously covered this area but need to review the basic concepts before making interpretations of other information relating to the subject. Effort has been made to maintain a chronological sequence so not only the ideas but the way they were developed may be apparent. This thesis should provide one of the requisites of a good teacher, that of a command of the subject.

An Analysis Of The Variation Of Food Contents In The Stomach Of The Common Perch (Perca Flavescens), Carl Lewis Heller
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was conducted primarily to determine the variation in the amount of food ingested by the common perch according to the time of day; secondarily, to determine any variation in the types of organisms ingested as food . In the teaching of the biological sciences, the teacher strives to enlighten and stimulate the students toward a better understanding of the living world. This study shows promise of furthering information about a common organism and should be of interest to the teacher and students.
The Status And Role Of The Principal In Selected Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 100 To 200 Students, Eugene Hiskey
The Status And Role Of The Principal In Selected Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 100 To 200 Students, Eugene Hiskey
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Within the next ten years, high schools in Iowa and throughout the United States will have the largest enrollments in history. There will, however, be fewer high schools because of school district reorganization. The present school district reorganization law of Iowa is a definite factor in the increase in number of high schools with enrollments of one hundred and over.

The Role Of The Hitler Youth In Nazi Education, Richard Andrew Dugstad
The Role Of The Hitler Youth In Nazi Education, Richard Andrew Dugstad
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Third Reich was promised by Hitler to last a thousand years; because of him, it was destroyed in twelve years. In the brief time the Nazi State occupied history's stage, the utter and ruthless control of all German youth was effected through the implementation of the National Socialist Youth Organization, the Hitler Youth. The National Socialist State did not immediately come into being; rather, the group of men responsible for its creation began early to lay the Nazi foundation by systematically indoctrinating many of the German people long before the 1933 assumption of power. After 1933, the National Socialist …
The Preparation Of A Suggested Unit Using Applications From Physics In The Teaching Of Trigonometric Functions In High School Trigonometry, Oliver Warren Eason
The Preparation Of A Suggested Unit Using Applications From Physics In The Teaching Of Trigonometric Functions In High School Trigonometry, Oliver Warren Eason
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In view of the crucial role played by science and technology in contemporary civilization, and because of the intimate relationship between science and mathematics, both pure and applied, a more adequate corre1ation in teaching can and should be effected between the fields of mathematics and science.

Some Effects On Intelligibility As The Sidetone Level And The Amount Of Sidetone Delay Are Changed, Chester J. Atkinson
Some Effects On Intelligibility As The Sidetone Level And The Amount Of Sidetone Delay Are Changed, Chester J. Atkinson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It is easy to ascribe the control of several aspects of speech to the monitoring function of the ear. Among these aspects are control of the rate, the sound pressure level, and the intelligibility of speech. The level of amplified sidetone has been shown to affect the intelligibility of speech under certain conditions. Delayed sidetone has been shown to affect the production of speech in several aspects. Most studies of delayed sidetone measure speech in terms of rate and sound pressure. The effects of delayed sidetone on correctness of reading a passage has been studied, as well as the effect …
The Relationship Of Peer Acceptance, Acceptance Of Others And Self Acceptance, Seymour L. Zelen
The Relationship Of Peer Acceptance, Acceptance Of Others And Self Acceptance, Seymour L. Zelen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent clinical psychology there has been an increasing tendency to link self-acceptance with the capacity to accept other individuals. Much of this movement has been led by Rogers (1949) and his students (Sheerer, 1949; Stock, 1949) using the phenomenological approach. It has been pointed out by Raimy (1948) that individuals who have been successfully counseled tend to shift markedly from a preponderance of self-disapproval to self- approval. Sheerer (1949) following this approach established that a substantial correlation exists between acceptance and respect for the self and acceptance and respect for others. Berger (1952) and Stock (1949) working within the …

Address To The Academy: Characteristics Of The Driving Population With Respect To Age, Sex, Driving Habits And Accident Involvement, A. R. Lauer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Since the year 1500 science has progressed at an accelerated pace. Almost every known type of problem has been experimentally attacked and methods have been developed for unravelling the riddle of particular phenomenon in question. The scope of scientific research extends from the investigation of the innermost secrets of the nucleus of the atom to the classification of facts known about ultrastellar space. This relentless discipline has probed into the secrets of living organisms and the gamut extends from explorations of submicroscopic, the nonfilterable virus, to the courtship and living habits of the stone-age man of New Guinea. However, homo …
A Rapid Softening Agent For Dried Plant Structures, Richard W. Pohl
A Rapid Softening Agent For Dried Plant Structures, Richard W. Pohl
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the past, dried plant materials, such as fragments of herbarium specimens, have generally been softened for dissection by boiling in water. Such a process has obvious disadvantages: slowness, fire hazard, and inconvenience. Furthermore, it is impossible to apply the boiling technique to mounted herbarium specimens without removing portions of the plant. While the author was engaged in the examination of the ligules of large numbers of grass specimens, it became evident that a solution which could be applied directly to the mounted specimen to soften it in situ would be of great advantage in preventing unnecessary breakage. A little …
Effect Of Massive Dosage Of Vitamin A On The Blood Plasma Fat And Vitamin A Levels In Dairy Calves, R. S. Allen, N. L. Jacobson
Effect Of Massive Dosage Of Vitamin A On The Blood Plasma Fat And Vitamin A Levels In Dairy Calves, R. S. Allen, N. L. Jacobson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although the significance of vitamin A in the nutrition of the young dairy calf is well recognized, the effects of ingestion of large amounts of this vitamin, particularly as related to other blood constituents, have received comparatively little attention. Investigations with other species suggest that there may be a relationship between vitamin A intake and the level of the serum lipids. Josephs (1942) reported that the administration of large amounts of vitamin A increased total serum lipids in both normal and vitamin A-deficient rats, the effect being much greater and persisting longer in the latter. Similar results were observed in …
Synthesis Of 4-Piperidinoflavan, R. L. Shriner, R. E. Schaeffer
Synthesis Of 4-Piperidinoflavan, R. L. Shriner, R. E. Schaeffer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A study of the reaction of flavylium perchlorate with piperidine showed that piperidine perchlorate was formed plus two other compounds. One of these appears to be 4-piperidinoflavene which should be reducible to 4-piperidinoflavan. This compound had not been described previously, hence its synthesis was undertaken. Flavanone was prepared according to the method of Kostanecki (1). Catalytic reduction of flavanone with hydrogen and a platinum catalyst gave a 79% yield of a compound melting at 145- 147°. This corresponds to the, B-isomer of 4-hydroxyflavan originally obtained by Karrar, Yen and Reichstein (2) as the result of a titanous chloride reduction of …

Analyses Of Wind-Blown Silt-March, 1954, R. L. Handy, C. A. Lyon, D. T. Davidson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Recent project work in the Soil Research Laboratory of the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station has been focused on studies of loess in Iowa. Since most geologists believe that loess was carried and deposited by the wind, members of the Engineering Experiment Station have long been interested in seeing silt-laden winds in action. This means visiting dust storms, and opportunities for study have been infrequent during the past 15 years. Recent developments in the southwest have changed this somewhat, and dust storms are once again plentiful. The combination of drought and strong winds has sent dust from Kansas and Colorado into …

Wonderlic, Wesman P.C.T., And A.C.E.: A Comparison Of Three Group Intelligence Tests, Charles F. Haner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There are many tests on the market purporting to measure general intelligence. They are used for a variety of purposes with many differing groups. Examination of them reveals so much diversity in the sorts of items they contain that one wonders how the tests can be measuring the same thing, i.e. general intelligence. Several tests have purported to break general intelligence into a verbal and a numerical factor. The ACE has long yielded such scores. More recently the Wesman PCT has found use in industry as a short intelligence test giving both a verbal and numerical score. Gerken (3), noting …
Situation Differences In Punitiveness Of Iowa School Children, William H. Lyle Jr., Eugene E. Levitt
Situation Differences In Punitiveness Of Iowa School Children, William H. Lyle Jr., Eugene E. Levitt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The present report is part of a larger study in which punitiveness of grade school children was found to be related to certain facets of what is commonly called the authoritarian personality. Punitiveness was measured by means of hypothetical situations involving transgressions by children. The subject is asked to prescribe the proper action to be taken against the transgressor by adults or peers involved. The test consists of 28 such problem situations each having six possible choices of action of which three are classed as punitive and three non-punitive. Punitive action includes physical and verbal punishments, coercion, and deprivation.
The Effect Of Ultracentrifuging On The Oxygen Consumption Of Developing And Blocked Grasshopper Eggs And Embryos, Joseph Hall Bodine
The Effect Of Ultracentrifuging On The Oxygen Consumption Of Developing And Blocked Grasshopper Eggs And Embryos, Joseph Hall Bodine
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Some effects of centrifugal force upon the egg of the grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis, have been reported by Bodine and Boell (1936). It was thought advisable to extend these observations to the embryo of this species since with data on both the egg and contained embryo, conclusions might be derived as to which parts in the egg (embryo or extra-embryonic materials) were being most affected. The present paper, therefore, is based upon a study of the O2 consumption of eggs and embryos subjected to various centrifugal forces as developed by the air-driven ultracentrifuge of Beams (1930).
