Criteria For The Utilization Of Teacher Committees In Planning New School Buildings, Robert D. Benton Jan 1956

Criteria For The Utilization Of Teacher Committees In Planning New School Buildings, Robert D. Benton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A neat, marble-columned school building stood on a hill overlooking the bustling main street and the neat, well-kept homes of Hometown, Iowa. The dedication ceremonies for the building had been held late the previous spring, and the bright, well-lighted classrooms were ready for the fall influx of students. The school building had been the fulfillment of many years of dreaming, planning, and working. Mr. Jones, the superintendent, had spent countless hours in laying out the floor plan just as he thought it should be. Interested citizens had offered their suggestions. which had been graciously accepted, and, for the most part, …

Some Uses Of An Oscilloscope In High School Physics, John Ray Bolte Jan 1956

Some Uses Of An Oscilloscope In High School Physics, John Ray Bolte

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Use of the cathode ray oscilloscope in the high school physics class has, in many instances, been overlooked by the high school physics teacher as a means of increasing the student's understanding of certain electrical phenomena. In many cases, the teacher may not be well acquainted with the use of an oscilloscope and, very often, the teacher may feel that the cost of such an instrument is beyond the limits of the typical high school science budget.

Some Photographic Materials And Techniques For High School Biology Teachers, Robert L. Calentine Jan 1956

Some Photographic Materials And Techniques For High School Biology Teachers, Robert L. Calentine

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Biology teachers in the smaller high schools are often confronted with the problem of securing sufficient classroom teaching material: charts, specimens, and reference books. A relatively inexpensive method of obtaining resource material would prove valuable to teachers confronted with this problem. Granting that actual study of specimens is of greater value than indirect methods, it is often helpful to have a supply of supplementary visual aids.

The Importance Of Federal Assistance In Maintaining The School Lunch Programs Of Jones County, Iowa, James Joseph Gonski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

School lunch programs, from their small beginnings early in the century, have become increasingly important to the education, health, and well-being of the youth of America. Through them, growing numbers of the school-age population receive approximately one-third of their daily food requirement. They also may learn about the nutritional values of the foods to which they are accustomed and the various ways these can be prepared and served. Through their school work they gain experience with new foods; they learn how foods are prepared, where they are produced, and how they fit into people's daily diets.

A Plan For Preparing And Operating A Marionette Theatre At The Junior High School Level, Louis E. Glorfeld Jan 1956

A Plan For Preparing And Operating A Marionette Theatre At The Junior High School Level, Louis E. Glorfeld

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this study to present a workable plan for preparing and operating a marionette theatre at the junior high school level. Although a great deal of material for the construction of the marionette theatre has been published and although the marionette theatre has been used in the junior high school, no material has been written specifically for use in the junior high school. This study presents a simple and workable plan for the operation of a marionette theatre which should be of value to the inexperienced teacher and to the teacher who is limited in facilities …

Colonel David B. Henderson: Speaker Of The House, Willard Hoing Jan 1956

Colonel David B. Henderson: Speaker Of The House, Willard Hoing

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The prominence of Iowa in national political affairs has long since declined. A little more than a half century ago her sons were high in the councils of state. Her Senators had acquired great prestige; her Representatives spoke with a voice of authority in Bouse committees. An Iowan was Speaker of the House of Representatives and ten important congressional committee chairmanships were held by Iowans. Two cabinet portfolios--the Treasury and Agriculture--were held by men from the Hawkeye state. Iowans twice neared the presidential office and one might have ridden into office on an assassin's bullet had he previously been willing …

Handbook Of Bacteriology For High School Teachers, David Loring Fagle Jan 1956

Handbook Of Bacteriology For High School Teachers, David Loring Fagle

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The study of bacteriology is frequently not included in the high school science curriculum and often, when it is taught, it is dealt with in only a superficial manner. There are various reasons for this. Very often high school science instructors lack training in courses relating to bacteriology and consequently, feel inadequate to handle the topic with their students. Another factor rests with the fact that bacteria are difficult to study without the aid or microscopes with high power objectives. Many high schools lack this equipment. A third factor is that some parents may feel that it may be dangerous …

A Comparison Of Methods For Handling Extreme Values In Experimental Procedure, Virtus W. Suhr Jan 1955

A Comparison Of Methods For Handling Extreme Values In Experimental Procedure, Virtus W. Suhr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In dealing with certain types of psychological measures, particularly those involving perception and attention, one is sometimes confronted with excessive values which are probably due to lapse of one type or another. Occasionally these extreme values may be numerous enough to spuriously influence the results. This is particularly true when the mean value of a series of scores is taken as a basis for comparing performance of two or more individuals or groups under different experimental conditions. Several rule-of-thumb methods have been used to secure a valid index for comparison of such measures. Among them are: 1. Use of the …

Variation In Length Of Songs Of The Black-Headed Grosbeak During The Breeding Season, Henry G. Weston Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

From April to September, 1945, and April to June, 1946, data were gathered on the breeding behavior of the black-headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) in Strawberry Canyon, on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley, California. Particular attention was given to the role of the sexes at the nest (Weston, 1947). Data were also gathered on variations of songs of the male during the breeding season.

A Network Representing Elastic Bodies In Spherical Coordinates, William A. Gross Jan 1955

A Network Representing Elastic Bodies In Spherical Coordinates, William A. Gross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Circuits representing elastic bodies described in rectangular and cylindrical coordinates have been described by Kron, and Gross and Soroka. Networks are developed here which represent elastic bodies described in spherical coordinates. Figure 1 shows a representative block of an elastic body with stresses and face areas indicated. Stress superscripts are so arranged that the first designates the normal to the surface on which the stress acts and the second, the direction of the stress. Partial differentiation is indicated by subscript comma and appropriate variables. The body force is represented by Fα. Incremental angles are required to be small.

Susceptibility Of Soybean Petioles To Attack By Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora, John Dunleavy Jan 1955

Susceptibility Of Soybean Petioles To Attack By Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Caulivora, John Dunleavy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora is a fungus that causes stem canker disease of soybean. The fungus forms a dark canker at the node of a diseased stem (Figure 1) and as the canker enlarges it eventually girdles the stem killing the tissues above the canker. Stem canker is a disease of considerable economic importance in the north central portion of the United States. The fungus has been observed attacking more than 70 percent of the plants in severely diseased fields in Iowa. Prior to 1948 stem canker was confused with the pod and stem blight disease of soybean, caused by …
