Evidences Of Positive And Negative Transfer Effects Between Highly Similar Perceptual-Motor Tasks, Ronald H. Peters, John R. Reil, David Leonard Jan 1960

Evidences Of Positive And Negative Transfer Effects Between Highly Similar Perceptual-Motor Tasks, Ronald H. Peters, John R. Reil, David Leonard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One hundred twenty male undergraduates, each assigned to one of two groups, performed highly similar perceptual-motor tasks varying in difficulty. The tasks were provided by the Multipoint Two-Hand Coordinator. On Day 2, one-half of the Ss in each group changed tasks while one-half continued on the same task. Evidences of positive and negative transfer effects were found with greater positive transfer from the easier to the more difficult task than in the reverse direction. A striking feature of the study was the persistence of negative transfer effects.

Problems Of The Mechanism Involved In The Metamorphosis Of Bugula And Amaroecium Larvae, William F. Lynch Jan 1960

Problems Of The Mechanism Involved In The Metamorphosis Of Bugula And Amaroecium Larvae, William F. Lynch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various treatments which induce precocious fixation or inhibit attachment of Bugula and Amaroecium larvae are reviewed. Heilbrunn's general theory of stimulation and anesthesia is thought to provide a fairly suitable explanation for the artificial induction or inhibition of metamorphosis of Bugula larvae, but the agents causing induced metamorphosis resemble those which affect cell division more than those which affect muscle contraction, a necessary correlate of the hypothesis. The hypothesis applied to Bugula larvae does not seem to offer a suitable explanation for induced metamorphosis in some ascidian tadpoles.

Development Of The Weberian Apparatus Of A Catostomid Fish, John L. Butler Jan 1960

Development Of The Weberian Apparatus Of A Catostomid Fish, John L. Butler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The apparatus in the adult Pantosteus plebius Baird and Girard, the Rio Grande mountain sucker, is complex, particularly so in the modification of the anterior vertebrae. The Weberian ossicles are derived from components of the anterior three vertebrae and from independent connective tissue ossifications. Development is rapid, with the rudiments appearing when the fish are approximately 9 mm. long, and the ossicles reach their mature shape at about the 12 mm. stage.

A Comparison Of The Mode Of Floral Abscission In Two Varieties Of Nicotiana Tabacum, Robert E. Yager Jan 1960

A Comparison Of The Mode Of Floral Abscission In Two Varieties Of Nicotiana Tabacum, Robert E. Yager

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oat plants were sprayed with gibberellic acid in con- centrations of 10 ppm, 100 ppm, 1000 ppm, and 2,500 ppm at 24 hours before and 24 and 144 hours after anthesis. The application 24 hours before or after anthesis caused 10 percent to 50 percent elongation of the upper internodes. Weight of the primary kernels was depressed approximately 10 percent and that of the secondary 15 percent. The effect upon seed size was independent of time of application or concentration.

Alteration Of Symptom Expression In The Cereal Rusts, M. D. Huffman, Ken Loats Jan 1960

Alteration Of Symptom Expression In The Cereal Rusts, M. D. Huffman, Ken Loats

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Cheyenne wheat was treated with varying concentrations of maleic hydrazide and indoleacetic acid in separate and combined applications. Lower concentrations of maleic hydrazide have an inhibitory effect upon germination of wheat seeds and vegetative growth but a stimulatory effect upon uredial pustule development of the leaf rust fungus (Puccinia recondita Rob. ex Desm.). Higher concentrations of maleic hydrazide further inhibit germination and vegetative growth of the host plant, but also inhibit development of the leaf rust fungus. Indoleacetic acid has a stimulatory effect on vegetative growth of the wheat plant at rather low concentrations. At the same time it tends …

Hydrodynamics In Some Arctic Lakes, Charles E. Carson, Keith M. Hussey Jan 1960

Hydrodynamics In Some Arctic Lakes, Charles E. Carson, Keith M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two hypotheses concerning wind-driven current systems in Alaska's oriented lakes are discussed. The first describes end-currents in the lakes returning upwind due to a hydrostatic pressure gradient on the downwind side. The second describes end-currents flowing in a windward direction and being related to the angle at which the waves approach the shoreline near the ends. These hypotheses are evaluated in the light of recent field work designed to test them.

Quail Hatching And Primary Feather Moult In Adults, M. E. Stempel Jan 1960

Quail Hatching And Primary Feather Moult In Adults, M. E. Stempel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was made to determine causes of changes in the young to adult ratio in quail shot by Iowa hunters. A total of 13,206 wings was collected from 1952 to 1959. Age of young and stage of moult in adults were determined by primary feather development. The hatching period was indicated by the age of young. Early brooding adults were first to mature the flight feathers. Late moulting adults were poor flyers and were easily taken by hunters.

A Method For Determining The Relative Abundance And Composition Of Calcite And Dolomite In Carbonate Rocks, Carl L. Hiltrop, John Lemish Jan 1960

A Method For Determining The Relative Abundance And Composition Of Calcite And Dolomite In Carbonate Rocks, Carl L. Hiltrop, John Lemish

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of determining the molar calcite to dolomite ratio in a carbonate rock arose as a result of investigations of concrete aggregate. A method for that determination is proposed, based on a combination of wet chemistry and X-ray techniques. Two carbonate rocks were analyzed and calcite to dolomite ratios were determined, basing the computations on two different assumptions. Those results are compared and suggestions made for further work.

Genesis And Classification Considerations Of Some Prairie-Formed Soil Profiles From Local Alluvium In Adair County, Iowa, F. F. Riecken, Ernest Poetsch Jan 1960

Genesis And Classification Considerations Of Some Prairie-Formed Soil Profiles From Local Alluvium In Adair County, Iowa, F. F. Riecken, Ernest Poetsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Data are presented on three profiles formed under prairie from Late Wisconsin to Recent age local alluvium of moderately fine texture. In the upper 20 inches nitrogen and base saturation values are quite similar to those found for normative upland Brunizems. Below 20 to about 50 inches, nitrogen and base saturation values decrease and increase, respectively, more slowly in the local alluvium-formed soils. It is suggested that the classic ABC soil genesis concept does not apply to the local alluvium-formed soils of this study. Rather, through cumulative effects of new parent material at the surface, this new C was transformed …

Morphology Of Frost Polygons As Related To Ground Slope In Eastern Greenland, Robert Duncan Enzmann Jan 1960

Morphology Of Frost Polygons As Related To Ground Slope In Eastern Greenland, Robert Duncan Enzmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper describes polygonal frost-patterned ground on level terraces, modification of the polygons by solifluction to garlands on slopes of 5° to 35°, modification of the garlands to rock stripes on slopes of 20° to 45°, collapse of stripes into jumbled rock glaciers on slopes of 35° to 60°, or more commonly, modification of stone stripes back through the sequence of stripes and garlands where the slope shallows toward the valley floor. The subsurface structures of eight polygons, two garlands, and two stone stripes were exposed by trenching. The garlands and stone stripes were on a slope lying between a …

Connecting Rod Forces In The Horizontal Engine, Victor W. Bolie Jan 1960

Connecting Rod Forces In The Horizontal Engine, Victor W. Bolie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Four equations define the effects of gravity, linkage and piston geometry, engine speed, inertia and mass of the rod and piston, thickness and viscosity of the oil film, and pressure in the crankcase and the combustion chamber. The equations were programmed for automatic digital computation, with typical values for the 15 parameters. The results are illustrated by graphs of the piston-head pressure and the tensile and normal forces acting on each end of the rod as functions of crankshaft rotation.
