Introits, Hymns, Anthems, And Responses For The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints, Donald L. Breshears

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The writer is a member of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Since a knowledge of some of the history and beliefs of this denomination is essential for an understanding of the problem undertaken, it will be necessary to explain them to some extent. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was founded on April 6,1830, by Joseph Smith on the premise that God, being unchangeable, can and does communicate His will to men on earth now, as in former days. Because of their peculiar social and religious philosophy and the need for self-protection …

Informational Materials In The Homes And Achievement In School Of Elementary Students At Iowa Falls, Iowa, Kenneth L. Christensen Jan 1961

Informational Materials In The Homes And Achievement In School Of Elementary Students At Iowa Falls, Iowa, Kenneth L. Christensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this rapidly changing world children are engaged with problems of science, social studies, literature, and world events. Their interests have been widened by travel, radio, television, newspapers, and magazines. Their curiosities have been aroused by new experiences and they search for related facts. The textbook formerly occupied a central position in learning; but in the complex society of the present, neither a single textbook nor multiple texts are adequate to enable the school to fulfill its responsibility for the education of children. Not only does a modern educational program demand more informational materials than did the narrow "essentials" program …

A Survey Of Articles Pertaining To Education Appearing In Selected Non-Professional Magazines During The Five-Year Period 1953-1957, Gerald Eugene Dockum

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There are very few people who are not earnestly interested in education, especially if they have children of their own enrolled in school. Nearly all of these people realize that the school is one of the most important agencies which exert an influence upon their children and which should provide them with the tools to develop for themselves a future of the type parents normally desire for their children. This, plus the fact that education is publicly-supported, makes a vast majority of the people of our country vitally interested in our system of public education.

An Analysis Of The Moral Attitudes Of High School Sophomores And Seniors In The Public Schools Of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Beaumont Roger Hagebak

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It has been more than twenty years since G. W. Allport said, "The concept of attitude is possibly the most distinctive and indispensable concept in contemporary American l social psychology." Yet even though two decades have passed his words are still as vital and meaningful as when they were first uttered. The importance of attitudes, of value systems, needs no documentation or proof. We all teel the effects of the attitudes of others, we all affect others by our attitudes, every day of our lives.

Critical Analyses Of Selected One-Act Plays For Use In Junior High School, Alice Margaret Hayes Jan 1961

Critical Analyses Of Selected One-Act Plays For Use In Junior High School, Alice Margaret Hayes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Production of plays and participation in plays should be integral parts of the junior high school program today, and there is a need for a critical analysis of plays of value and worth to the age-group that comprises the enrollment in a junior high school (ages 12-14). Lists of plays are available for the senior high school and for the elementary school but few studies have been made of plays suitable for the junior high school. There is no known analysis of such plays; hence, the need for this study. To know what is meant by plays of value and …

The Status Of Industrial Arts In Hawaii, Teruo Mukai

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many people are interested in the industrial-arts program in Hawaii, especially since it has become the fiftieth state. Because of the interest, and since the background of the writer included eighteen years of residence in Hawaii and five years of professional preparation in the field of industrial arts it was decided that a status study would be made to see what was going on in the industrial-arts program in Hawaii.

It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine teacher qualifications as to college preparation and experience; (2) to determine what type of shops were most common such as …

Industrial-Arts Objectives And Course Content For The Junior High School, William Earl Stock

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study were to determine: (1) the stated objectives in the more recent industrial-arts courses of study for the junior high school; and (2) the courses or units which should comprise the industrial-arts curriculum of the junior high school as indicated by selected industrial-arts teachers.

The objectives were recorded from state and city industrial-arts bulletins for the junior high school and compared to a master list compiled in a study by Reed. Objectives which were listed in 50 per cent or more of the bulletins were considered to be objectives for junior-high-school industrial arts which characterize the …

The Integration Of Some Principles Of Business Management Into Beginning Bookkeeping Through The Use Of Case Problems, Sally Ann Wallace Jefferson Jan 1961

The Integration Of Some Principles Of Business Management Into Beginning Bookkeeping Through The Use Of Case Problems, Sally Ann Wallace Jefferson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The keeping of books as financial records has long been the backbone of the expanse and variety of human activities commonly known as "business". Financial records are important as historical records; as a source of information for creditors, owners and investors; and as a tool with which management can analyze business. Double-entry bookkeeping, which forms the basis of many formal bookkeeping courses, is based on fundamental principles which date back to the days of early Mediterranean commerce. These principles were first set forth in 1494 by Lucas Paccioli in the oldest treatise ever printed or written on the subject of …

The primary objective of this project was to increase the writer's effectiveness as a teacher of instrumental and vocal music through a better understanding of the creative process. This composition was not conceived with a specific performing organization in mind, nor does it pretend to explore any contemporary idioms. A conventional harmonic and melodic structure is used throughout the work.

Lost Worlds: Three Original One-Act Plays, Alice Hickey Flinn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Someone has said that the urge to create literature is common to most of mankind. "Everyone wants to write a book. " Most people will admit, too, that the wish to create something of value seems to be an intrinsic part of man's character. In this particular instance , these three plays represent a life- long fulfillment of a long-time desire o The writer's primary aim is to at tempt to create literature. A secondary aim is to have the plays sustain dramatic interest. A third aim is to fulfill a requirement for a master's degree at the State College …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

If our country is to maintain the position of a world power, it is important that each of its citizens receives an education in proportion to his potential. As Ginzberg states in his book, Human Resources: The Wealth of a Nation, "While every society must get along with such talent as it has, its accomplishments and even its survival will depend on its developing the maximum number of people with high potential. A counselor in the educational system might think in terms of this ideal of maximum development when visualizing an educational goal for his high school group. But ours …

Water And Solute Content Of Tree Trunks, Warren E. Engelhard, Robert C. Lommasson Jan 1960

Water And Solute Content Of Tree Trunks, Warren E. Engelhard, Robert C. Lommasson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Bi-weekly samples of wood were taken from two species of conifers and three species of dicots from September to April. From the samples water content and solute content of each tree were determined. From soil samples taken beneath each tree the soil moisture was determined. The water content in the dicots was high in winter and low in the fall and spring, and in the conifers it was high in the fall and decreased through the winter to low values in the spring. Soil water influenced the water content of the trees only in minor details. The solute content of …

The Effect Of Kinetin On The Rate Of Multiplication Of Paramecia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Kathleen Sullivan Jan 1960

The Effect Of Kinetin On The Rate Of Multiplication Of Paramecia, Mary Annunciata Mcmanus, Kathleen Sullivan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A stimulation of the rate of division of Paramecium caudatum by kinetin has been reported. This paper reports investigations in which kinetin was found to be inhibitory, rather than stimulatory, to division of paramecia under similar conditions and at the same concentrations. Addition of IAA apparently counteracted the inhibition produced by kinetin.

A Source Of Bacterial Blight Resistance For Soybeans, J. M. Dunleavy, C. R. Weber, D. W. Chamberlain

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Incidence of bacterial blight of soybeans was observed from 1953 to 1959. During this period the disease was observed in 25 to 72 percent of the fields examined. A search was made for an improved source of blight resistance. A soybean introduction, P.I. 68708 was resistant to blight under natural conditions and when inoculated. It was also resistant to brown spot but was susceptible to race 8 of Peronospora manshurica as well as to Phytophthora rot. Yield, date of maturity, seed size, seed quality, and lodging resistance of the introduction were comparable to the same characters of the variety Blackhawk.

A Modified Oil Refining Loss Method, Lionel K. Arnold, Huan Yang Chang Jan 1960

A Modified Oil Refining Loss Method, Lionel K. Arnold, Huan Yang Chang

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In certain research studies involving the determination of the refining loss of vegetable oils, such as soybean, the 500-gram samples required by the official method may not be available. The chromatographic method, while giving consistent results on a given sample, does not give results which check the official method. A modification of the official cup method was developed using a cup of special design with a 50-gram sample. Good checks with the official method were obtained. It was found that variations in evaporation losses were more important than mixing speeds in affecting results.

Drainage Development In Lower Fresno Creek Area, Presidio County, Texas, Richard W. Rush Jan 1960

Drainage Development In Lower Fresno Creek Area, Presidio County, Texas, Richard W. Rush

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Comparison of landforms in adjacent watersheds shows stripped forms in lower Fresno Creek basin and alluvial forms in Lajitas basin. The hypothesis is presented that these landforms resulted from a sequence of stream captures in which Lajitas drainage diverted headwaters of Terlingua Creek, and that later capture of the same headwaters by Fresno Creek established modern drainage lines. Interpretation of the evidence shows that physical features of each basin result from specific factors, including stream energy, within each stream system.
