Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait Jan 1971

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait

Graduate Research Papers

Children's books have been a source of delight to them; they have evoked both tears and laughter from young audiences. The illustrator has come to be a partner in the creation of hooks for children. The term children's literature now includes the efforts of both illustrators and authors. It was not always so. For many years children read adult books because there was no such thing as a storybook for children. When they came, the books for children were dull fare. They were moralizing with few, if any, illustrations.

Gradually illustrators began illustrating books specifically for children. The literary content …

Retournez Á La Nature, Mary Jo Bruett Jan 1971

Retournez Á La Nature, Mary Jo Bruett

Graduate Research Papers

Known as the Father of French Romanticism, Jean-Jacques Rousseau is noted for contributing much to his time. Not only will he be remembered for being an essayist and novelist, but he is noted as a philosopher and a principal adversary of the characteristics of 18th century philosophy. Rousseau's unique childhood became his own philosophy and in turn the basis of his well known educational theory "retournez, a la nature" the return to nature. Because of this theory and his writings, education as well as literature, were greatly influenced.

Science Through Choice, Darrell G. Phillips

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The young lady pictured on the front cover of this issue is deeply involved in structuring her own intellect. She is certainly finding out how particular things "work," but, more importantly she is using her own mind to plan next steps, to explore possibilities and to make decisions. Such intense involvement in learning is not at all uncommon, but this particular situation is highly unique-unique because it is taking place in a science classroom in a public school!

Using A Computer In High School Chemistry, Floyd F. Sturtevant, Kenneth A. Hartman Jan 1971

Using A Computer In High School Chemistry, Floyd F. Sturtevant, Kenneth A. Hartman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The advent of the computer is having a great influence on our society and the educational system. Many public school systems have contracted with institutions and organizations for use of their computer facility in class scheduling, pupil accounting, fiscal accounting, preparation of student grades and the like. The computer has not, with the exception of some experimental situations, been widely used in the public schools as an instructional tool. The advent of the time-sharing and multi-tasking computer provides the opportunity for public schools to avail themselves of an instructional computer at a reasonable cost without employing specialized computer scientists. It …

Investigative Methods For The Science Teacher, Bernard D. Hermanson Jan 1971

Investigative Methods For The Science Teacher, Bernard D. Hermanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The basis for this research project was the idea: Why tell or lecture students about an idea or fact when, if given the appropriate information, they would be able to figure it out for themselves? This does not mean that we hand the students a text and tell them to learn about the subject on their own, nor is this "investigative" approach to be used all the time. Because of the different levels of reasoning needed for various topics, one cannot expect a student to deduce the composition of an atom as easily as he can deduce the composition of …

Paramecia Affected By Leaf Extracts, M. Bley, B. Frenchick, K. Smith Jan 1971

Paramecia Affected By Leaf Extracts, M. Bley, B. Frenchick, K. Smith

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Leaves and needles from deciduous and coniferous trees play a major role in the formation of soil in their respective forests and thus help to determine the type of life that can successfully live there. Because of the known effects of leaf and needle litter on larger invertebrate life, earthworms, millipedes, etc., it was decided to experiment with infusions of paramecia derived from both leaves and needles to see if they were similarly affected.

Effect Of Salicylic Acid On The Early Development Of The Chick Limb-Bud, Suleiman A. Suleiman, John R. Baker Jan 1971

Effect Of Salicylic Acid On The Early Development Of The Chick Limb-Bud, Suleiman A. Suleiman, John R. Baker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Transplanted hind limb-buds of chick embryos were treated with salicylic acid. Treatment with this chemical caused reduction in length, weight and volume of the developing limb-buds. A side effect observed was an apparent loosening of the basal membrane and examined with regard to length, weight, and volume. The above observations are discussed in relation to the different hypotheses of the ectoderm-mesoderm interaction. The physiological role of the basal membrane, as well as the possible implications of the basal findings to the question of limb development and morphogenesis, are also discussed.

Intra-Stream Movement And Distribution Of Channel Catfish, James Mayhew Jan 1971

Intra-Stream Movement And Distribution Of Channel Catfish, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Channel catfish were marked and tagged in a 20-mile stretch of the lower Des Moines River. The experimental area was separated into eight segments of 2.5 miles each. Dispersion of recaptured fish from these segments was used to describe movement. Of the 4,988 catfish tagged, 345 were recaptured in the following two years. Approximately 50% of the recaptured fish did not move from the segment in which they were originally marked. Moving catfish were distributed in a normal fashion in upstream and downstream directions. Mean distances of movement was 5.6 miles downstream and 5.1 miles upstream. The greatest distances recorded …

Movement Of Bigmouth Buffalo In Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Larry Mitzner Jan 1971

Movement Of Bigmouth Buffalo In Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Larry Mitzner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Movement characteristics of bigmouth buffalo were determined and used to correct for error in population estimates caused by dilution effect. No gross upstream or downstream movement was observed and one standard deviation of movement from point of release was 1.13 miles based on 60 recaptures. A total of 8,065 individuals were marked. I estimated 81% of the marked fish remained in a four mile study area during the investigation. Models are presented to determine movement and dispersion of marked fish from point of release.
