A Behavioral Framework For Justification Of Co-Curricular Speech Programs And Activities, Douglas M. Trank Jan 1975

A Behavioral Framework For Justification Of Co-Curricular Speech Programs And Activities, Douglas M. Trank

Iowa Journal of Communication

The majority of debate and forensic coaches in Iowa along with the rest of the nation have always been faced with a variety of internal and external problems that pose definite threats to the scope and existence of their programs. These have often been problems that force us to constantly re-evaluate, revise, and rebuild our respective co-curricular programs. Although most of the articles in our journals have been primarily concerned with the plight of our forensic programs at the college level, forensic programs in our secondary schools are faced with many of the same problems. Recent educational trends in such …

Methods Used By Iowa Elementary Librarians In Teaching Library Skills, Florence W. Thordsen Jan 1975

Methods Used By Iowa Elementary Librarians In Teaching Library Skills, Florence W. Thordsen

Graduate Research Papers

In all areas of teaching the word "relevancy" is being used. College instructors in the fields of education, articles written by educators, leaders of education workshops are saying that the student learns faster and retains more when materials and approaches are relevant. In recent years, only since about 1966, those in the school library field have been advancing this theory. Ericson and Carmody state in a 1971 article, "Individualization has always been the librarian's stock and trade. Add the new keynote 'relevancy.' There can, then, be no predetermined sequence taught as isolated media skills lessons. To be effective, any teaching …

A Survey Of Classical Rhetoric From Hermogenes To Bernard, Matthew C. Morrison Jan 1975

A Survey Of Classical Rhetoric From Hermogenes To Bernard, Matthew C. Morrison

Iowa Journal of Communication

At the time of Quintilian's death in c. 97 the Graeco-Latin culture of the Roman Empire still thirsted for the intellectual and artistic traditions of its great past, "but the stream was running low, and its current was becoming progressively more feeble." A century of stagnation came close on the heels of Quintilian's passing, and following it a sharp decline. Literature suffered at the hands of showy ''Asianism," and of the arts only architecture produced anything of timeless quality. Science and philosophy lingered a little longer, but, before the accession of Diocletian in 284 A.D., they too had wilted before …

A Speech To Entertain - A Significant But Little Taught Speech Form, James C. Skaine Jan 1975

A Speech To Entertain - A Significant But Little Taught Speech Form, James C. Skaine

Iowa Journal of Communication

For years I have believed the speech to entertain to be an important type of speech. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught the speech to entertain as one of the three major speech purposes; to inform and to persuade being the other two. For most of those years I have felt that this speech purpose was much misunderstood and therefore seldom taught by colleagues at the college level. Support for this belief was supplied recently by Gibson, Kline and Gruner in their survey of the first course in speech at American colleges and universities.1 Their results indicate that …

Averaging And Set-Size Effects In Selecting Groups Of Movies For A Film Festival, Irwin P. Levin, Valerie S. Hensley Jan 1975

Averaging And Set-Size Effects In Selecting Groups Of Movies For A Film Festival, Irwin P. Levin, Valerie S. Hensley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper deals with the set-size effect in information processing: the study of how subjective judgments and impressions based on sets of information vary as a function of the amount of information in the set. Subjects rated each of a series of popular old movies to be used in assembling a college film festival. They then rated intact groups of movies of various size and indicated how much money should be spent for each group. Group ratings and money allocations were examined as a function of group size. Group ratings were found to increase in polarity and money allocations were …

A lawsuit has been filed to regain their reservation in the southeas.t corner of Arizona which was terminated by executive order in 1877, The Chiricahua people are scattered, with some making their homes on the Mescalero Reservation in New Mexico, the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona, and at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.. The majority of the group lives in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. …

University Of Northern Iowa Prospective Elementary Teachers’ Attitudes Toward School Media Programs, Christine A. Odell Jan 1975

University Of Northern Iowa Prospective Elementary Teachers’ Attitudes Toward School Media Programs, Christine A. Odell

Graduate Research Papers

This report will deal with the question of attitudes. The problems to be looked into are twofold. The first, what attitudes toward elementary school library/media programs are held by prospective elementary teachers, is the main concern of the study. However, this problem suggests another; what attitudes toward elementary school librarians/media specialists are held by prospective elementary teachers. This second problem will also be considered in this report.

The History Of Plant Ecology In Iowa As Reflected In The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, A. G. Van Der Valk Jan 1975

The History Of Plant Ecology In Iowa As Reflected In The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, A. G. Van Der Valk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

All plant ecology papers published in the Proceedings from 1887 to 1973 were identified. On the average only 1.4 papers were published per year. An examination of the number of papers published in successive five-year intervals indicates that there were three distinct periods in the history of plant ecology in Iowa with three individuals dominating each period: 1887-1931 - L. H. Pammel, B. Shimek, and Ada Hayden; 1932-1951 - H. S. Conard, J. M. Aikman, and Ada Hayden; 1952-1971 - J. M. Aikman, R. F. Thorne, and R. Q. Landers. There have been very few active plant ecologists in Iowa, …

Portrayals Of Blacks By Authors And Illustrators Of Children's Literature And How Their Literature Affects Children's Attitudes, Diane Amdahl Jan 1975

Portrayals Of Blacks By Authors And Illustrators Of Children's Literature And How Their Literature Affects Children's Attitudes, Diane Amdahl

Graduate Research Papers

Children associate with each other every day. They work, play, and have fun together in school church, organizations, recreation, etc. For many children much of this association is limited to others of their own race. How, then, do they learn to accept others of different races? How do they learn to work, play, and have fun with these children? Integration has forced the association of white children with black children, but this does not always bring acceptance, and acceptance is the beginning of a total relationship.

It is the intent of this paper to show how children's literature can promote …

Learning Stations: One Method Of Individualization, Douglas Harrenstein Jan 1975

Learning Stations: One Method Of Individualization, Douglas Harrenstein

Graduate Research Papers

This research paper will attempt to answer the question: Learning stations: How do they work? Because of the current emphasis on individualization, learning stations offer one way of approaching individualization. The concept of learning stations hinges on the premise that the teacher can make better learning opportunities for more individual types.

Blood Parasites From Birds Of The Lake Okoboji Region, Iowa, John N. Farmer, David H. Vesole Jan 1975

Blood Parasites From Birds Of The Lake Okoboji Region, Iowa, John N. Farmer, David H. Vesole

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hematozoa are reported from 171 birds, representing 7 orders of 20 families and 33 species, all collected in Dickinson County, northwest Iowa, with the majority of animals being collected at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Milford, Iowa. Blood parasites were observed in 67 birds (39.2%), with an incidence as follows: Haemoproteus sp., 45 (26.3%); Leucocytozoon sp., 19 (11.1%); Plasmodium sp., 4 (2.3%); Trypanosoma 3 (1.7%); and microfilariae, 29 (16.9%). An evaluation of these results indicates a dramatic decrease in the incidence of blood parasites later in the summer. The presence of parasites early in the spring is considered to be a …

On The Feasibility Of Coal-Driven Power Stations, O. R. Frisch Jan 1975

On The Feasibility Of Coal-Driven Power Stations, O. R. Frisch

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The recent discovery of coal (black, fossilized plant remains) in a number of places offers an interesting alternative to the production of power from fission. Some of the places where coal has been found show indeed signs of previous exploitation by prehistoric men, who, however, probably used it for jewels and to blacken their faces at religious ceremonies. The power potentials depend on the fact that coal can be readily oxidized, with the production of a high temperature and an energy of about 0.0000001 megawatt days per gram. That is, of course, very little, but large amounts of coal (perhaps …

Seeing Sound, Sondra Waltz Jan 1975

Seeing Sound, Sondra Waltz

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Making sound visible is a useful activity in teaching students the concepts that sound is caused by vibrating objects and that different sounds are caused by different types of vibration. This particular activity makes it possible to see the sounds produced by observing a vibrating, metal plate. As the plate produces sound it vibrates violently in some areas and not at all in other regions. If a small amount of very fine sand or poppy seed is sprinkled on the plate as it vibrates, the seeds will move to areas where vibration is minimal and form distinct distributional patterns on …

Evaluation Of Diets In Paperback Books And Popular Magazines For The Nutritional Adequacy Of Teenage Girls, Susan A. Wieben

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to provide a resource which can guide media specialists an the selection and use of diet programs found in paperback books and popular magazines. The media specialist can use the results directly as well as use the criteria to evaluate new diets as they appear. The study will evaluate the diets according to the Basic 4 food guide and the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). The results are expected to show that one fourth or less of the diets found in paperback books will meet all the criteria. It is expected that the diets found …

Food From Newspaper Jan 1975

Food From Newspaper

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Cellulose is the most abundant organic material which can be used as a source of food, fuel and chemicals. The net world-wide production of cellulose is estimated at one hundred billion tons per year. This is approximately 150 lbs. of cellulose per day for each and every one of the earth's 3.9 billion people. The energy to produce this vast quantity of cellulose comes from the sun and is fixed by photosynthesis.
