Notes On Science Teaching - 1, Sherman Lundy
Notes On Science Teaching - 1, Sherman Lundy
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Many teachers seem to operate from a partial teaching model that does not adequately relate the various parts to the whole of science education. The current state of affairs is much like that of the six blind men describing an elephant. Each teacher sees in part and formulates a description of science education from that point of view. As a result, teachers often become torn between subject matter; student needs; teaching techniques; administrative, community, and governmental influences; and other concerns, all tending to fragment the approach to science education.
Scientific Instrumentation: It's Older Than You Think
Scientific Instrumentation: It's Older Than You Think

If you accidentally walked into the wrong room at a university and found yourself surrounded by balances, glass tubing, Bunsen burners, flasks, beakers and the like, you could safely assume that you had entered a chemistry laboratory. Had the room been filled with timers, force tables, pulleys, oscilloscopes and the like, it might be a physics lab. The tools and instruments a scientist uses betray not only his profession but often his current line of research and the questions he is asking. In the space below a major scientific instrument is described. Read the list slowly and try to identify …

Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow
Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Those of us who have participated in the curriculum movement over the past decade have seen a profound change in the orientation of curriculum makers during this period. In the wave of science-based curriculum projects that followed the launching of Sputnik in 1957 there was little explicit attention given to the social purposes of instruction. The emphasis in those years was on the transmission of knowledge in the most economical form through the identification of central ideas, and on the invention of pedagogical techniques that supported and reinforced the child's natural curiosity and desire to learn. One of the most …

Your local cemetery may be an excellent field trip site. For example, I use wooded Timber Creek Cemetery for the following study. Each student collects data from nine different headstones and also plots the location of the same grave markers on a map. The student records the name and sex of the deceased, epitaph and/ or heritage, cause of death if recorded, the condition of the headstone, the kind of rock it is, and anything unique about it.

A 17-year-old Iowa girl won a trip to the 1974 International Science and Engineering Fair by grafting skin onto 12 mice in the basement of her home after only talking with a veterinarian. One mouse died, one sloughed off the graft, and the others were killed by the student with an overdose of ether. A 15-year-old Kentucky boy won a trip to the same fair by trapping three squirrels in a park, confining them to cages in his basement, and giving them electric shocks over a period of several months to learn if they would respond to visual tests. This …

Becoming Acquainted With India Through Children’S Books (An Annotated Bibliography), Wilma M. Tyler
Becoming Acquainted With India Through Children’S Books (An Annotated Bibliography), Wilma M. Tyler
Graduate Research Papers
This bibliography is an attempt to list some of the best books written for boys and girls on the subject of India.. Basic recommended book lists, bibliographies, and the collection at the Youth Library, University of Northern Iowa, have been consulted to compile it. This is by no means a complete list and it will need periodic revision. So that a major portion of it will remain relevant, the emphasis has been on imaginative literature. The folk tales of India are strongly stressed because they are so closely associated with this country's religions, customs and manners.

Two major areas of concern to the adolescent are behavior and emotions. They are interested in learning about genuine emotions and how people feel when they behave in certain ways. They also are concerned about the real world and seek to understand their own emotions, behaviors and life. Materials that provide for these particular interests will be appealing to the adolescent reader. Again, media specialists should be aware of any existing materials that deal with these concerns for possible purchase.

A Selected Bibliography Of Methods And Materials For Teaching Creative Writing, Linda R. Groen
Graduate Research Papers
Creative writing can be seen, then, as an integral part of the curriculum, and the need to investigate it is readily apparent. The nature of the material available on creative writing necessitated that the investigation be handled in a somewhat different manner from that of the usual research project. Although a great deal has been written about creative writing, the emphasis has been on techniques, rationalities, and ideas. Few research studies have been conducted on the need for or design of creative writing programs. For this reason, and from comments made by authors such as Ms. Mueller, the author has …

Floristic Composition And Structure Of Fen Communities In Northwest Iowa, A. G. Van Der Valk
Floristic Composition And Structure Of Fen Communities In Northwest Iowa, A. G. Van Der Valk
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Iowa fens have three distinct, concentric vegetation zones: a border zone, a sedge mat zone, and a discharge zone where ground water supplying the fens comes to the surface. Calamagrostis inexpansa Gray, Viola nephrophylla Greene, Scirpus americanus Pers. and Carex spp. are the dominants in the border zone. The composition of this zone is quite variable both within and between fens. The sedge mat is composed primarily of Rhynchospora capillacea Torr. Other species normally found in this zone are Lobelia kalmii L., Muhlenbergia racemosa (Michx.) BSP, Parnassia glauca Raf., Triglochin maritima L. and Scirpus americanus. Although all of the species …

The Vertebrate Fauna Of The Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, William J. Platt
The Vertebrate Fauna Of The Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, William J. Platt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The vertebrate fauna of the Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, has been compiled from field observations and study between 1971 and 1974. Seventy-two species, including four amphibians, seven reptiles, 35 birds, and 26 mammals, were recorded. The diverse fauna results from the variety of habitats contained in the preserve, as well as the size of the preserve. One key member of the fauna is the badger (Taxidea taxus), which creates microhabitats favorable for small vertebrates while digging for ground squirrels. Few adventive vertebrates have successfully invaded the prairie, and the fauna represents a sizable fragment (larger vertebrates are absent) …
The Integration Of Self-Descriptions And Descriptions By Outside References In The Evaluation Of Job Applicants, Jeanette M. Dolezal, Irwin P. Levin
The Integration Of Self-Descriptions And Descriptions By Outside References In The Evaluation Of Job Applicants, Jeanette M. Dolezal, Irwin P. Levin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A study was conducted to determine how different types of information are combined to arrive at evaluations of hypothetical job applicants. Sixty subjects were asked to evaluate nine applicants for the position of elementary school principal. The information describing each applicant included a letter of self-description and from one to three letters from outside references. Results can be summarized as follows: (1) evaluative ratings of job applicants were directly related to the value (level of favorability) of the information contained in the outside letters of reference and the value of the information contained in the self-description; (2) the greater the …

How The Report Of The Commission Of Pornography And Obscenity And The Supreme Court Decisions Of June 21, 1973 Effected Citizen Action Groups, 1970-1975, Dennis A. Hinrichs
Graduate Research Papers
The specific problem to be discussed is stated as follows: Was there a difference in the number of successful actions taken by citizen action groups after the publication of the Report of the Commission on Obscenity and Pornography and the number of successful actions taken by citizen action groups following the Supreme Court rulings of June 21, 1973?
Assessing Laboratory Instruction In Biology, Melton E. Golmon
Assessing Laboratory Instruction In Biology, Melton E. Golmon
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Biology curriculum developments of the last decade have emphasized the importance of laboratory instruction in the learning environment. Not only do most students enjoy laboratory work but it provides them with an opportunity to make first hand observations, manipulate equipment, collect data, organize data, and draw their own conclusions concerning this information. One teaching strategy for laboratory instruction developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) creates a setting in which a question can be formulated that may be answered as a result of laboratory work. Special instruction is given for specific laboratory techniques and skills when necessary but major …
Team Orientation In The Chemistry Laboratory, David N. West
Team Orientation In The Chemistry Laboratory, David N. West
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The importance of laboratory experience for students is widely accepted by chemistry educators and usually includes the following behavioral objectives: 1. Training in the scientific method. 2. Developing skills with laboratory apparatus. 3. Learning and applying chemical theory. 4. Communicating laboratory results. It is the opinion of this writer that through a team orientation approach to instruction other behavioral objectives can be attained in laboratory situations that are also useful to students pursuing professional careers in chemistry.
Coal? What's That?
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In any analysis of the energy resources now available to the United States of America, coal occupies a dominant if not a preeminent position. The very fact that, within the borders of the U.S., there is more energy in the form of coal (more than three trillion tons) than in all of the other combined resources of fossil fuel-petroleum, natural gas, oil shale, and bituminous sandstone-makes coal loom as our most important source of energy for the remaining years of this century, and perhaps for centuries to come.

A Pound Of Prevention: Teacher's Guide To Behavior Problems, James L. Hymes Jr.
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
They come to school with one big urge: to be liked by the other children, to find a place they can fit in. It is not a question of being in or out; IN they have to be. Children have only one choice: to be in on something good or to be in on something bad. No child can stand to be ignored. It feels better to be noticed for swearing, or for mistakes, or for forgetting, or for silliness, than not to be noticed at all.
On Appreciating Science
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The scientific attitudes which should be developed are: An intense curiosity about the world in which we live; A firm understanding that every effect has a cause, and every cause is the effect of a prior cause; A firm belief in truth; Making careful and accurate observations; Weighing all the evidence before drawing a conclusion; Appreciating the debt owed to scientists of the past.

"Earth" is a proper name. Do we speak of "the mars," or of "the jupiter," or of "the venus"? Then why "the earth"? It is a degradation of both our thinking and our very special planet.

Characterization In The Beany Malone Series, Cean Elizabeth Mcclenathan
Graduate Research Papers
This study showed that Lenora Mattingly Weber did not change the personalities of her characters over the twenty-six years. The characters had the same basic character traits in all of the fourteen novels in the Beany Malone series. Mrs. Weber included more minority characters in her later novels. The characters were stereotyped by their sexual roles throughout the fourteen novels.
