Bud Formation And Shoot Development In Vitro: Observations On Stem And Bud Explants Of Psychotria Punctata (Rubiaceae), Wayne J. Edwards, Clifford E. Lamotte Jan 1976

Bud Formation And Shoot Development In Vitro: Observations On Stem And Bud Explants Of Psychotria Punctata (Rubiaceae), Wayne J. Edwards, Clifford E. Lamotte

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Protuberances tentatively identified as buds were initiated on callus proliferating from the bases of excised terminal buds of Psychotria punctata (Rubiaceae) cultured on media containing 10(-4) and 10(-5)M zeatin. Only those cultures maintained in a greenhouse during mid-summer formed such buds. A high cytokinin concentration together with one or more specific environmental conditions appear to be required for their formation. In contrast, large nodule-bearing shoots developed directly from terminal buds when these were excised during the fall and cultured on the same medium in controlled environment chambers providing temperatures and light intensities lower than in the greenhouse. Zeatin was required …

Taxonomic notes are presented on seven taxa new to the state and on six excluded taxa. A flora of 57 species and 3 hybrids is recognized. Floristic notes are presented on the status of the state flora and county floras. The addition of 402 new county records increases the total of county occurrences by 47%. Statements of habitat and distribution are presented with dot maps for the …

Grammatical Ambiguity In Japanese And English, Joseph Clarc Chryst Jan 1976

Grammatical Ambiguity In Japanese And English, Joseph Clarc Chryst

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As indicated in the title, the principal topic of this thesis is the concept of grammatical ambiguity. In this thesis, that concept and the concept of function switching rules are identified and defined. Examples of noun phrases from Japanese and English which exhibit grammatical ambiguity are analyzed. Examples of noun phrases in English which necessitate the formulation of function switching rules are provided and discussed. The study is conducted within a generative-transformational analytical framework. Non-generative studies germane to the topic are discussed. The bulk of the example sentences for Japanese come from non-generative sources.

The Case Of The Mysterious Lizard, Patrick D. Murphy Jan 1976

The Case Of The Mysterious Lizard, Patrick D. Murphy

Graduate Research Papers

The Council Bluffs Community Schools does not have media specialists in most of its elementary buildings. This means that there is not a qualified professional available to teach library skills to a majority of the students. The prospects of an improvement in this situation in the near future are not good because of budgetary pressures, Because of this, responsibility for instruction in library skills must be assumed by district level personnel. As there are only two professionals on the district level, some means of reaching many students in a limited amount of time must be used, A television production meets …

Censorship In Iowa Schools, Janet Tibbets Jan 1976

Censorship In Iowa Schools, Janet Tibbets

Graduate Research Papers

Research for this study covers the 1974-1975 school year and the 1975-1976 school year. A comparison of the data collected from the two years will show that as the media centers become a more important and integral part of the school curriculum, their visibility will cause material in the centers to become more subject to question. There will therefore be an increase in censorship in the schools in the 1975-1976 school year. Research will also show that persons in the community who make complaints against material have common characteristics, such as religious background, educational level and membership in special interest …

Zonation, Competitive Displacement And Standing Crop Of Northwest Iowa Fen Communities, A. G. Van Der Valk Jan 1976

Zonation, Competitive Displacement And Standing Crop Of Northwest Iowa Fen Communities, A. G. Van Der Valk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Well developed Iowa fens contain three distinct vegetation zones (border zone, sedge mat zone and discharge zone). On the average, the above ground standing crop of these zones is 425, 197 and 528 g/m2 respectively. Species growing on these fens show three basic distributional patterns: (1) they grow in the border and discharge zones; (2) they grow primarily in the sedge mat zone or (3) they grow in all three zones. Individual plants of species growing in the border and/or discharge zone are on the average 1.6 to 2.7 times taller and weigh 1.8 to 5.4 times more than …

Construction And Evaluation Of A Small Solar-Heated Building, D. H. Schuster Jan 1976

Construction And Evaluation Of A Small Solar-Heated Building, D. H. Schuster

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A small (16' X 18') solar-heated building has been built in Ames and data have been collected to evaluate it in several ways. The first objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of solar heating in maintaining specified building temperatures. The second objective was to compare the cost of adding solar heating to the building with the cost of heating it electrically over many years to a break-even point. The plan of the evaluation used the building as its own control in a time series design. For one week, the building was operated with electrical nighttime heating. For the next alternate …

Ovary Wall And Pericarp Ontogeny In Lychnis Alba (Caryophyllaceae), William J. Oostenink Jan 1976

Ovary Wall And Pericarp Ontogeny In Lychnis Alba (Caryophyllaceae), William J. Oostenink

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The development of the Lychnis alba ovary has been studied to provide original data regarding the rapid increase in ovary size which follows pollination. Preliminary study of the development of the ovary of an unpollinated flower has shown that this development follows a uniformly regular pattern quite unlike the rapid enlargement following pollination. The development of the unpollinated flower's ovary was traced from the time it was 0.3mm in length to the time it had attained maturity at approximately 7.0mm in length. At this point natural abscission occurs if the flower is not pollinated. A maximum ovary/fruit length of 15.2 …

Notes On Iowa Diatoms Xi: A Study Of The Genus Pinnularia From Dead Man's Lake, C. L. Christensen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forty-three (43) taxa of Pinnularia collected from a Sphagnum bog in north central Iowa are added to the state records for this genus. The numbers of Pinnularia entities are generally much larger in this habitat than in other Iowa habitats. Furthermore, the size ranges of many taxa exceed those given in published descriptions. As of 1972, published records for the state number sixty-four (64) taxa in this genus.

Sphagnum Taxa And Their Distribution In Iowa, Howard A. Crum, Nels R. Lersten, Glenn H. Crum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sphagnum was known previously from eight counties in Iowa based on documented specimens. Undocumented collections were also reported from Buchanan, Cedar, and Johnson Counties. We have added four new species (S. compactum, S. fimbriatum, S. squarrosum, and S. warnstorfii) and three new varieties (S. subsecundum var. subsecundum, S. recurvum var. amblyphyllum, and S. recurvum var. recurvum) to the state flora, and four new stations in three counties (Black Hawk, Iowa, and Marion) where sphagnum was previously unknown. Sphagnum is presently represented in Iowa by documented collections of 13 taxa from 13 stations in 9 counties, mostly in the eastern third …

Studies On Silica-Scaled Chrysophytes From Iowa, James L. Wee, John D. Dodd, Daniele Wujek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

References in the literature to the silica-scaled chrysophytes of Iowa are few and, since the advent of the electron microscope, identifications of taxa in this group are no longer considered valid without accompanying electron micrographs. Using scanning electron microscopy for critical identifications, eight taxa genera of the Synuraceae are reported here including the first known report of the genus Paraphysomonas from Iowa. From the other two genera, Mallomonas and Synura, only one of the taxa in this paper, Mallomonas pseudocoronata, has been reported from Iowa previously. Mallomonas acaroides var. striatula, M. tonsurata, M. tonsurata var. alpina, M. teilingii, M. pseudocorcnata, …

Off-Shell Effects In The Photodisintegration Of The Deuteron, Wytse Van Dijk Jan 1976

Off-Shell Effects In The Photodisintegration Of The Deuteron, Wytse Van Dijk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The off-shell effects on the photodisintegration cross section of the deuteron are studied by means of a set of interactions which have identical on-shell, but different off-shell behavior. All members of this set yield the same two-nucleon scattering phase shifts and deuteron binding energy, but wave functions which differ at short distances. The experimental photodisintegration results could therefore be used as a further check on the off-shell properties of phenomenologically determined interactions.

Recovery Of Alumina From Coal Fly Ash By High Temperature Chlorination, M. J. Murtha, G. Burnet Jan 1976

Recovery Of Alumina From Coal Fly Ash By High Temperature Chlorination, M. J. Murtha, G. Burnet

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The recovery of metals from low value sources will help reduce our national demand for foreign resources. The ash from bituminous type coals contains about 20 percent aluminum oxide and 20 percent iron oxides by weight. Recovery of these metals would provide an alternate source to the ores now used. The iron and aluminum materials in fly ash are recoverable by high temperature chlorination. Passing dry chlorine gas through a bed of nonmagnetic fly ash maintained at 850 to 900 degrees C. chlorinates the iron and aluminum constituents forming volatile compounds which are carried from the bed by the exit …

A Study Of Two Facultative Lagoons For Municipal Wastewater Treatment In Iowa, Kevin N. Nelson, Lavene K. Payne, Ruth B. Wildman Jan 1976

A Study Of Two Facultative Lagoons For Municipal Wastewater Treatment In Iowa, Kevin N. Nelson, Lavene K. Payne, Ruth B. Wildman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two 2-celled facultative lagoons, comparable in design and serving small communities in rural Iowa, were studied for seven consecutive summer weeks. Chemical and physical parameters of water quality were monitored in samples taken from influent and effluent structures and at two depths and three to six locations in each cell. The composition and density of the phytoplankton was monitored, and total and fecal coliform counts were made. A diurnal study showed wide fluctuations in the chemical composition of influent wastewater. The quality of effluent water was comparable for the two lagoons although one was loaded to design capacity and the …

There's Nothing New Under The Sun, Geraldine E. Larocque

The attempt to unite theory and practice in the education of English teachers has taken many forms: courses in which theoreticians attempt to illuminate the practice of professional teachers or student teachers; situations in which teacher-education faculty cooperate with teachers; student teachers; and the community; in order to make programs more responsive to community needs; and instruction in which school-based apprenticeship is stressed. Until research can provide a firm base for the structure and content of methods courses; professionals must rely on their own judgment as to the placement of emphasis. An adaptation of Lee J. Cronbach's research paradigm; used …

A Brief Look At Individualized Instruction, James L. Kelly Jan 1976

A Brief Look At Individualized Instruction, James L. Kelly

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

If one examines the terminology that is a part of education today, it becomes evident that the teacher is responsible for more than factual presentations. Accountability, humanism, credibility, and personalization are just a few of the new terms being applied to the teachers working vocabulary. All teachers, including science teachers, are constantly being asked to meet the needs of all their students, not just a selected few. This is especially true now, since nationwide science class enrollments are declining. Individualized instruction is a part of the new terminology and, in a limited amount of space, it is also the topic …

Career Opportunities Await Qualified Students, Gerald H. Krockover

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Even though we like to equate a college education with a good job, we are finding that while this was once true, it is not true for the graduates of the mid l 970's. In 1973, for example, 18 percent of the graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences at one Big Ten university who did not go on to graduate school were still unemployed six months after graduation and almost as many were working as secretaries, clerks, laborers, factory workers, and janitors. Ten years ago fewer than 500,000 bachelor's degrees were awarded in the United States and there …
