Tracheoid Idioblasts In Chenopodiaceae: A Review And New Observations On Salicornia Virginica, Nels R. Lersten, Curtlin G. Bender Jan 1976

Tracheoid Idioblasts In Chenopodiaceae: A Review And New Observations On Salicornia Virginica, Nels R. Lersten, Curtlin G. Bender

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Tracheoid idioblasts in the Chenopodiaceae have been reported in about 30 species of Salicornia and Arthrocnemum. These cells vary in size, shape, wall pattern, abundance, and spatial relation to vascular bundles. Most investigators have reported, or shown them to be unattached to vascular bundles. Tracheoid idioblasts in our examples of Salicornia virginica L., from two California coastal sites and a coastal site in Washington, were never connected to vascular bundles. The cortex of flowering and vegetative shoots contained helical-walled tracheids, whereas reticulate and pitted cells occurred only in flowering shoots. Elongate spicular cells with 2° walls were found in both …

Mourning Dove Nesting Success In Artificial And Natural Nests In Central Minnesota, Gary Nelson Jan 1976

Mourning Dove Nesting Success In Artificial And Natural Nests In Central Minnesota, Gary Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mourning dove (Zenaidura macroura) nesting success in artificial and natural nests was investigated in 1974 on seven study areas in central Minnesota. Nesting success in artificial nests was significantly greater (P<0.05) than that in natural nests. Of 69 nesting attempts in artificial nests, 60.9% (42) were successful. Of 224 nesting attempts in natural nests, 44.2% (99) were successful. Sixty-nine nesting attempts were made in 59 of the 203 artificial nests installed. This represents a 34.0% rate of utilization.

Sponsorship Biasing Effects On A School Library Censorship Survey, Andris E. Kaupins Jan 1976

Sponsorship Biasing Effects On A School Library Censorship Survey, Andris E. Kaupins

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to determine what relationship exists between two survey sponsoring organizations and the responses of a randomly selected group of Iowa public high school librarians (n = 200) to a revised version of a library censorship questionnaire developed by Charles H. Busha. One hundred of these librarians received the mailed questionnaires with the stated sponsorship of the Department of Library Science, at the University of Northern Iowa (85% response). The other 100 librarians received the same questionnaire but with the stated sponsorship of the fictitious "Society for Decency in Literature" (55% response). One section of …

A Study In Moral Development In Children's Literature, Judith A. Casey Jan 1976

A Study In Moral Development In Children's Literature, Judith A. Casey

Graduate Research Papers

This study was undertaken for the purpose of analyzing children's picture books to determine if specific moral conflict episodes could be identified, according to Lawrence Kohlberg's cognitive theory of moral development. The identification of conflict dilemmas was made by examining selected books for young readers to identify and isolate problems encountered by one or more characters. If conflict story incidents could be identified and described, it seemed probable that teachers could use them as a primary source for stimulating discussions about moral problem solving behaviors. Thus, a second purpose was to determine if a process of questioning could be used …

An Investigation Of Competencies Needed By Teachers Of The Mildly Handicapped As Perceived By A Consortium Of Iowa Special Educators, Harriet M. Healy Jan 1976

An Investigation Of Competencies Needed By Teachers Of The Mildly Handicapped As Perceived By A Consortium Of Iowa Special Educators, Harriet M. Healy

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A major purpose of this study was to subject the University of Northern Iowa's special education competencies to a consortium rating for determination of the relative importance of each competency for teachers of the mildly handicapped. A secondary purpose of this study was to determine the generic nature of these competencies.

The subjects involved in the study included Iowa special education teacher trainers; Area Education Agency directors and consultants for multi-disability programs; and special education teachers in multi-disability settings.

A questionnaire employing a forced ranking procedure was mailed to each subject. The results of the ranking were used to determine …

A Comparative Analysis Of Actual And Desired Performance Dimensions Of Selected Iowa Secondary School Principals, Leroy C. Leidal Jan 1976

A Comparative Analysis Of Actual And Desired Performance Dimensions Of Selected Iowa Secondary School Principals, Leroy C. Leidal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was intended to discover how the practicing principal views his role. Specifically, it focused on how he feels he spends his time and how he feels he should spend his time. Characteristics of the personal life, the professional preparation, and the current position of the practicing Iowa principal were studied as factors which influence the role,

Several studies were found to be descriptive of the role and its problems, but not to have clear and precise directives for performance. Analysis of the literature revealed a role encompassing many tasks, foremost of which included tasks performed for the supervision …

The ITBS September scores of Home Start children were compared …

Formation Constants For Dithiooxalate Complexes, William A. Deskin, Julie Worcester, Richard Cell, Gary Lord Jan 1976

Formation Constants For Dithiooxalate Complexes, William A. Deskin, Julie Worcester, Richard Cell, Gary Lord

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent studies in our laboratories have been made to determine the formation constants for complexes of copper (II) and palladium (II) with potassium dithiooxalate. Earlier studies (1) have shown that nickel (II), palladium (II) and platinum (II) form square planar complexes with this ligand. Subsequent work (2) has shown that copper (II) also forms a planar complex with potassium dithiooxalate.

The Effigy Mound Manifestation In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam Jan 1976

The Effigy Mound Manifestation In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Effigy Mound manifestation ranks as one of the most poorly documented and understood prehistoric cultural phenomena in Iowa. As employed in this paper, the term Effigy Mound refers to the animal-shaped earthen mounds and the cultural activities of the prehistoric societies who constructed them. Although three major archaeological surveys have been conducted in northeastern Iowa, none has specifically emphasized the Effigy Mound manifestation. Consequently, there is a definite lack of mound data necessary for the construction of distribution patterns and cultural models relating to this manifestation. The Luther College Effigy Mound Survey of 1973 was undertaken for the purpose …

Comparative Foraging Behavior Of Six Sympatric Woodpecker Species, George J. Gamboa, Kenneth M. Brown Jan 1976

Comparative Foraging Behavior Of Six Sympatric Woodpecker Species, George J. Gamboa, Kenneth M. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The foraging behavior of six sympatric woodpecker species was studied between March 18 and April 24, 1975, in an oak-hickory woodland in Iowa City, Iowa. The six species of woodpeckers did not differ significantly in the parameter of mean foraging height, but did forage on different mean limb diameters. Other differences in foraging behavior noted between species were dead/live tree selection, sap utilization, and ground foraging. Significant differences in foraging behavior were also recorded between sexes of downy woodpeckers. Males tended to forage higher in trees and on smaller limbs than conspecific females.

Current Status Of The Woodcock In Iowa, Eugene D. Kloglan, H. Lee Gladfelter, Robert G. Sheets, Gene Hlavka Jan 1976

Current Status Of The Woodcock In Iowa, Eugene D. Kloglan, H. Lee Gladfelter, Robert G. Sheets, Gene Hlavka

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa is at the western edge of the continental range of woodcock. Because of their scarcity in the state, little interest has been shown in them. They are a prized game bird in many states in the eastern half of the country. In 1961, Iowa began participating in the annual U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spring woodcock census, which has increased efforts to learn more about this species in the state. The spring singing-ground census of courting males revealed that a low population of breeding woodcock exists in suitable habitat, primarily limited to the eastern one-third of the state. Thirty …

The Effects Of Selected Sugars On The Rheological Properties Of Rehydrated Vital Gluten, Wai Hong William Kwa, Richard Wm. Tock, Elizabeth M. Osman Jan 1976

The Effects Of Selected Sugars On The Rheological Properties Of Rehydrated Vital Gluten, Wai Hong William Kwa, Richard Wm. Tock, Elizabeth M. Osman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Solutions of four common sugars, sucrose, maltose, glucose, and fructose were individually mixed with rehydrated vital gluten. The mixtures were then subjected to a standard baking test and to rheological examination. In both instances the addition of sugar significantly altered stress-strain relationships. The viscosity and extensibility of all the mixtures containing sugar were greater than that of the pure gluten. This suggests that the sugars had peptized the gluten and inhibited its thermal coagulation during baking. Significant differences between the action of individual sugars could not be ascertained, however. A Maxwell model for visoelastic behavior was found to fit the …

Multiplicative And Additive Processes In The Subjective Evaluation Of Travel Expense, Valerie S. Hensley, Irwin P. Levin Jan 1976

Multiplicative And Additive Processes In The Subjective Evaluation Of Travel Expense, Valerie S. Hensley, Irwin P. Levin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Subjects were asked to make absolute judgments and relative ratings of travel expense for a series of hypothetical trips described by varying levels of distance to be travelled, gasoline price, and expected gas mileage. In Experiment 1, intuitive estimates of cost in dollars followed a multiplicative model analogous to the "rational" model but allowing individual differences in evaluating and weighting stimulus factors. In Experiment 2, subjective ratings of relative expense followed an additive model. An additive model implies that an extreme value of one factor will be balanced by more neutral values of other factors, whereas a multiplicative model implies …

Helminth Parasites Of Some Iowa Fishes, M. Christopher Barnhart, Gregg W. Calderwood, Edwin C. Powell Jan 1976

Helminth Parasites Of Some Iowa Fishes, M. Christopher Barnhart, Gregg W. Calderwood, Edwin C. Powell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Individuals of 16 species of fishes representing the Centrarchidae, Ictaluridae, Catastomidae, Cyprinidae, Percidae, and Serranidae were collected at 8 localities in central and north-central Iowa, and examined for helminth parasites. Thirty-nine parasite species were recovered: 20 Monogenea, 8 Digenea, 3 Cestoda, 4 Acanthocephala, and 4 Nematoda. A new host record is reported for Gyrodactylus machrochiri from Lepomis humilis.

Controlled Waterfowl Hunting At Lake Odessa, Louisa County, Iowa, William D. Eldridge, Paul N. Hinz, Milton W. Weller Jan 1976

Controlled Waterfowl Hunting At Lake Odessa, Louisa County, Iowa, William D. Eldridge, Paul N. Hinz, Milton W. Weller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Lake Odessa Public Hunting Area supports two systems of regulated waterfowl hunting. Control Area A consists of 55 marked blind sites which are chosen randomly by hunters during a daily drawing. Hunters using the second area, Control Area B, are not restricted to blind sites and a daily fee is not required, but all parties must possess a valid permit. Hunter use of Control Area A was uniform throughout the 1972 and 1973 hunting seasons due to the better mallard (Anas platy rhynchos) shooting on that area. Control Area B hunter use decreased as the season progressed, reflecting the …

The Vegetation Of Stinson Prairie, Kossuth County, Iowa, David C. Glenn-Lewin Jan 1976

The Vegetation Of Stinson Prairie, Kossuth County, Iowa, David C. Glenn-Lewin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Stinson Prairie, a 12.5 ha native preserve, is a rich grassland exhibiting the full range of prairie vegetation. Situated on a rolling moraine, topographic differences produce four main vegetation types: dry prairie, mesic prairie, swales and pothholes. Species richness is highest in the mesic prairie and lowest in the swales and pothholes. Stinson Prairie, although small, is well preserved, and compared to Kalsow Prairie (mesic) and Sheeder Prairie (dry), shows a well-developed vegetation gradient. Cypripedium candidum, an orchid rare in Iowa, is found on Stinson Prairie.

Archaeological Research In The Glenwood Locality: Changing Perspectives, Larry J. Zimmerman Jan 1976

Archaeological Research In The Glenwood Locality: Changing Perspectives, Larry J. Zimmerman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The three period scheme used by Anderson (1975) to analyze the development of Iowa archaeology is used in this paper to examine Central Plains tradition research in the Glenwood locality, Mills County, Iowa. Pioneer Investigations were primarily descriptive and indicated that the locality had been the locus of considerable aboriginal activity. The focal point of research in the Keyes-Orr Period was taxonomic and conclusively linked the Glenwood materials to cultures in Nebraska. Contemporary Period research focused on detailed analyses of artifacts and internal temporal relationships of locality sites. A greatly expanded data base provided foundations for reconstructions of lifeways and …
