Sovereign Right, Democracy And The Rule Of Law, Artur Golczewski Mar 2006

Sovereign Right, Democracy And The Rule Of Law, Artur Golczewski

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In the often hotly contested contemporary critical discourse, the related notions of individual and social identity, values and viable conduct continue to be the bone of contention, as their competing rationales sanction radically distinctive existential frameworks. The present essay employs some of the methodological strategies of the genealogical analysis as progressively refined by Ernst Kantorowicz and Michel Foucault, and it aims to chart a trajectory of historical applications and effects of the theory of sovereignty as the organizing principle coordinating our legal and socio-governmental rationales of value and of individual and social conduct. The principle governing Kantorowicz’s selection and consideration …

A Review By Koch Of A Whole New Mind: Moving From The Information Age To The Conceptual Age, By Daniel Pink, Susan J. Koch

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Every once in a while an otherwise predictable academic meeting produces some exceptionally provocative discussion and perhaps even some long term effect. Such was the case at this year's annual gathering of U.S. Graduate Deans, where the Council of Graduate Schools had invited Daniel Pink to discuss his new book, A Whole New Mind, in the particular context of higher education's capacity to develop human talent. Pink's time spent with us was a fascinating intersection; one that has been much in my mind as we have been focused this year on creating a new strategic direction for graduate education …

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson Mar 2006

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In his book, What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy, James Paul Gee argues that “the power of video games, for good or ill, resides in the ways in which they meld learning and identity…,” and he cautions that this power can be used to miscommunicate wrong ideology (such as might be found in a neo-Nazi game that encourages the player to conduct ethnic cleansing (199). However, Gee advocates “understanding the ‘play’ of identities and perspectives as they work for and against each other in the world, now and throughout history” (200). The art – …

Remembering Leslie J. Workman (1927 - 2001), Kathleen Verduin

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

It is May of 1980. I am a still relatively young Assistant Professor at Hope College, and because classes are over and Kalamazoo is only an hour away and I nurse aspirations of becoming a Dantist as well as an Americanist I attend the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University. On Sunday, the last day of the Congress, I decide to take breakfast in the dining room of one of the Goldsworth Valley dormitories. This is why I believe-or at least will say for effect-that Fate was stepping in, for in those days I never ate breakfast.

A Case In Which A Revitalization Of Something Medieval Turned Out Not To Be Medievalism, Mette B. Bruun Mar 2006

A Case In Which A Revitalization Of Something Medieval Turned Out Not To Be Medievalism, Mette B. Bruun

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The Cistercian Order was founded in Burgundy, France, in 1098 in a wake of the reform-enthusiasm related to the so-called Gregorian reform. The Order saw a rapid success in the 12th century and spread through most of Europe not least thanks to its main figure, Bernard Clairvaux (1090-1153). Bernard was an influential man. He corresponded with princes and popes and engaged in a wide array of ecclesiastical causes and politics. He was constantly on the watch for heresy or relapse in whichever guise and persistently sought to drive his contemporaries into soteriologically safer havens: Cistercian monasteries, crusades, orthodoxy, or, if …

"The Play's The Thing": Considering The Morality Play In Morality Play, Heather Kennedy Mcdonald Mar 2006

"The Play's The Thing": Considering The Morality Play In Morality Play, Heather Kennedy Mcdonald

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The paucity of details about secular theater in the fourteenth century allows Barry Unsworth to imagine what a troupe of players would look like if we could examine them right at the time when "a totally new form of drama was being born" (Unsworth, "Barry Unsworth on Fourteenth Century Life and Theatre"). In his novel Morality Play, he imagines poor, itinerant players competing with the large guilds that put on an entire cycle of plays with the backing of unlimited funds. He conjectures that these players would be an amalgamation of different types of troupes that endeavored …

Interiority And Authenticity: A Glossed Medieval History About Music And The Taste For Apples, Eyolf Østrem Mar 2006

Interiority And Authenticity: A Glossed Medieval History About Music And The Taste For Apples, Eyolf Østrem

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The article is an attempt at balancing between historical relativism and a fact-based historiography, with a point of departure in a theoretical discussion of the relationship between history and experience, and the author's personal experience of the Middle Ages, in search of an answer to the question: "Does it matter what the music of the Middle Ages sounded like when it was made?"

Exteriority And Authenticity: A Trope On Østrem’S “Interiority And Authenticity”: Author As Scholar & Artist, Nils Holger Petersen Mar 2006

Exteriority And Authenticity: A Trope On Østrem’S “Interiority And Authenticity”: Author As Scholar & Artist, Nils Holger Petersen

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Østrem establishes an intimate connection between personal, individual experience - and memory - and the wider scope of a historical narrative basing his account among other things on Hayden White's thought. I will take my point of departure in the two following well-known statements from White's Tropics of Discourse:

  • Many historians continue to treat their "facts" as though they were "given" and refuse to recognize, unlike most scientists, that they are not so much found as constructed by the kinds of questions which the investigator asks of the phenomena before him. It is the same notion of objectivity that …

The Gothic Cathedral And Medievalism, Stephanie A. Glaser Mar 2006

The Gothic Cathedral And Medievalism, Stephanie A. Glaser

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The juxtaposition of these two terms would surprise few, for who would question that the medieval edifice and the study of it in archaeology and art history, and its use in promoting religious, political, social, or aesthetic ideologies since the fifteenth century is a rich subject of medievalism? And yet, at three recent conferences dedicated to the subject: La Cathédrale (2000), The Idea of the Gothic Cathedral (2005), and L'imaginaire moderne de la cathédrale (2006), medievalism as a point of view or even point of departure for the discussions about modern representations of the Gothic edifice, was practically non-existent. This …

A Review By Lynn E. Nielsen Of Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension Of American Racism, By James Loewen, Lynn E. Nielsen

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In his highly researched and documented book, Sundown Towns, James Loewen details a sad narrative of American race relations by concluding, "Until we solve the problem of sundown neighborhoods and towns, we do not have a chance of solving America's race problem."

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair Mar 2006

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Teaching about the Middle Ages in French culture or literature courses is always an enlightening experience to me because of the richness of symbols, events, and starting points occurring during this time period. Very often, when thinking about the Middle Ages, Christianity, chivalry, and nobility come to mind, all values still of high importance in contemporary Western societies. However, medieval culture presents itself with an array of other behaviors and values, some of which may today be considered as offensive and even sometimes “alienating”: primitive, barbaric, or even animalistic forms of behavior.

What Happened When A Mathematician Found Himself Funded By The National Endowment For The Humanities, Joel K. Haack Mar 2006

What Happened When A Mathematician Found Himself Funded By The National Endowment For The Humanities, Joel K. Haack

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Exploring the relationships between mathematics and the humanities can be stimulating for both faculty and students. That there are connections should surprise no one in interdisciplinary studies, but finding them might prove to be more difficult; humanists and mathematicians have not been involved in extensive dialogue in recent years. This study provides a field guide to the kinds of connections that one might find with examples of each.

Crossing The Timeline: Michael Crichton's Bestseller As Social Criticism And History, Linda Bingham Mar 2006

Crossing The Timeline: Michael Crichton's Bestseller As Social Criticism And History, Linda Bingham

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Michael Crichton's best-selling suspense novel Timeline combines futuristic science with medieval history, resulting in a remarkably successful and thrilling page-turner. By authoritatively blending academic arcana with fabricated scientific innovation, Crichton also convinces the average reader that the science in the novel is based on current scientific knowledge and that the medieval portions of the novel are based on solid historical research, which, for the most part, they are. Given the fantastic premise of the supposedly present-day science of quantum transportation between universes, one would expect the history-based sections of the book to have the stronger underpinnings. But, surprisingly, the plot …

Rounding Up Students' Conceptions On Circular Motion, Shannon Mclaughlin

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The purpose of this paper is to provide insight on how introducing circular motion with a carefully designed sequence of demonstrations and activities consistent with the national standards, pedagogical knowledge, and research-based instructional practices can flush out students' conceptions of forces and motion, and set a conceptual foundation for understanding uniform circular motion. This article promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, B, and E, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Circuits Without Wires?: Helping Students Understand The Power Of Ions, Elizabeth Potter, Caroline Kelly Jan 2006

Circuits Without Wires?: Helping Students Understand The Power Of Ions, Elizabeth Potter, Caroline Kelly

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The activity described here provides an inquiry experience using familiar materials to promote student exploration and understanding of ions and ionic compounds. Familiar materials throughout the laboratory help students relate science to the real world and students are able to use their understanding of those materials. This activity uses an inquiry approach that requires students to make more decisions about their experiment, but does not expect students to discover scientific ideas. This article identifies many ways that the nature of science should be incorporated into the learning experience so that students improve their understanding of what science is and how …
