Depictions Of Male-Male Sexual Activities In Ancient Greece As Expressed Through Visual Imagery: Aspects Of Roles, Abigail Bristow

Honors Program Theses

The Greek Classical period (ca. 400-600 BCE) yields various types of evidence concerning male-male sex. These include figural depictions and literary references with some of the later addressing rules of civilized behavior. This study will explore the existing material with an attempt to find the extent to which the visual imagery reflects the social rules as described in the surviving literary texts.

You might be able to predict when certain wildlife will come to an area to feed, the sounds a bird makes when attempting to protect its young or what will trigger a rabbit to freeze in place. You’ll also be practicing the skills scientists use to make their observations: comparing and contrasting, measuring, counting and …

Validation Of Physical Activity As A Measure Of Shoulder Dysfunction, Lindsey Kae Alderson Jan 2008

Validation Of Physical Activity As A Measure Of Shoulder Dysfunction, Lindsey Kae Alderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The use of physical activity measures has been used in a variety of populations with various diseases and disabilities. The use of physical activity measures has shown known-group differences in populations with neurological disease, stroke patients, and lower extremity dysfunction. Physical activity measures have been used to show health differences, recovery, and disease progression and regression. The purpose of this project was to examine if physical activity are affected by isolated upper extremity shoulder injuries which then may be used as a functional outcome measure. This study was a non-experimental, observational, matched-pair design. A total of fourteen participants composed two …

Specification And Automatic Code Generation Of The Data Layer For Data-Intensive Web-Based Applications, Sergei Golitsinski Jan 2008

Specification And Automatic Code Generation Of The Data Layer For Data-Intensive Web-Based Applications, Sergei Golitsinski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this thesis I propose a new code generation approach to developing data-intensive web-based applications. I hypothesize that it is possible to build a code generator which will significantly improve development of data-intensive web-based applications by generating at least 50% of the data access code based on a specification of the application's data model. My main argument is that the application's data model is sufficient for deriving most of the data access functionality. To test this hypothesis I designed a data definition language, came up with a set of rules for deriving data access operations from the application's data model, …

Visual Perceptions: A Study Of How Children Can Learn Through Pictures, Melody L. Gustas

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to team teach a third grade unit on Bettendorf city history using the minimal resources that are available to teachers. The focus was to increase assessment scores of students who were exposed to current up-to-date photographs of their city. The hypothesis for this research was: If third grade students are taught using current up-to-date photographs of their city then they will be more likely to remember places and landmarks that they study.

The students were divided into two groups. Both groups received the same lessons on Bettendorf history in their classroom. One group then …

A Comparison Of The Portrayal Of Evil In Fairy Tales And Contemporary Fantasy Fiction, Donna Gwinnup

Graduate Research Papers

Writing and publishing literature for children and young adults has become a rhizomorphic entity. There are thousands of books published each year. When you compare that to the little over two hundred stories Perrault and the Grimm brothers recorded you can see how the market has substantially grown. With the use of literature as a teaching tool it is imperative we keep a close watch on trends. This study was designed to look at the changes from fairy tales to contemporary fiction in order to ascertain what changes have taken place in three particular areas: has the gender of the …

Going Beyond Cookbook Labs : Computer-Based Laboratory Tools In The High School Physics Classroom, Jennifer A. Strohbehn Jan 2008

Going Beyond Cookbook Labs : Computer-Based Laboratory Tools In The High School Physics Classroom, Jennifer A. Strohbehn

Graduate Research Papers

Physics education is currently undergoing a face lift. The lecture should no longer be the primary mode of instruction because students are not actively participating. For effective learning to occur, the students need to be engaged, not passive listeners (Knight, 2005). Student-centered classrooms are becoming more common, but there is still work to be done. For a student-centered classroom to be effective, the students must construct their own understanding with the teacher acting as a 'guide. Physics instructors are responsible .for .making the classroom a user friendly environment for students to explore the basic concepts of physics and to develop …

A Vision For Leading And Learning : A Reflective Essay, Todd M. Werner Jan 2008

A Vision For Leading And Learning : A Reflective Essay, Todd M. Werner

Graduate Research Papers

It was my junior year of high school when I first started thinking about becoming a teacher. That year Williamsburg High School had hired a new Government teacher who was also the assistant boy's basketball coach. He was a first year teacher but he came out and really tried to make a difference from the start. I vividly remember how he tried to consistently challenge us in the classroom and in the gym. He worked hard at what he did and he expected the same in return. Even when he was pushing and challenging, he treated everyone with respect and …

Pain Stages Of Change: Variations In Pain Acceptance, Catastrophizing, And Emotional Distress Across A Model Of Readiness For Behavior Change, Melinda J. Collingwood Jan 2008

Pain Stages Of Change: Variations In Pain Acceptance, Catastrophizing, And Emotional Distress Across A Model Of Readiness For Behavior Change, Melinda J. Collingwood

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Pain often signals a problem that needs our attention, but after healing has occurred and pain persists, protective behaviors may become maladaptive to day-to-day functioning. Through education, therapy, and self-management, individuals can learn to function well on a daily basis even with some pain present, but not all pain patients are ready for this type of self-management. The transtheoretical model has been adapted to assess individuals with chronic pain. If individuals are not ready for behavior change, relapse chances increase; therefore it becomes beneficial to understand an individual's level of readiness to change when judging potential treatment success. The ability …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It compares a similar study of goals from 1983, and reports on changes in levels of importance from 1983 to 2008.

Directors' perceptions of goal importance of 2008 present levels and 2008 future levels were determined to be significantly different in 23 of 26 cases. Goals were grouped in four categories, (a) management/adaptation,/positional, having to do with management tasks, (b) groups served, those targeted …

What is the goal of education in America today? Why is education so important to our society? Why do we spend millions of dollars each year towards the success of America's educational system? What processes and procedures should be employed to insure an efficient and effective education for all individuals? These questions and more arise as we consider the current academic, social, and economic climate of America, as well as the rest of the world; and the role education has played in shaping our past, impacting our present, and directing our future as individuals of a free society.
