Arthur C. Clarke’S Childhood’S End: A Prescription For Producing Humanity’S Psychological Maturity, Bill Koch Mar 2008

Arthur C. Clarke’S Childhood’S End: A Prescription For Producing Humanity’S Psychological Maturity, Bill Koch

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Earlier this year, when I would tell people that my Intro to Lit class was reading Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End, they would react with smiles and nods of recognition.

Many said, “Yes, I read that long ago—it’s about spaceships coming to earth, right?”

Indeed it is, and more.

It was the first Clarke book I had read (several years ago for some forgotten reason), but when I finished the book I felt that Clarke had conveyed something of importance, even if in the form of science fiction. There was a gravitas to it I hadn’t expected. I read several …

Introduction, Richard Utz

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In the spring semester of 2007, I offered a graduate seminar investigating the "The Arthurian Legend in English Literature and Culture" at the University of Northern Iowa. In order to extend the scope of the class beyond the area of English studies and to provide participants with a chance to showcase their scholarship to a wider audience than themselves and their instructor, I organized a conference, entitled "Culture and the Medieval King," which invited contributions from graduate students and advanced undergraduate students to present papers on all cultural manifestations of King Arthur and Arthuriana in the Middle Ages as well …

Teaching High School Age Students With Special Needs The Four Situations For Subtraction, K. A. D. Miller, Audrey C. Rule, V. M. Macentee Feb 2008

Teaching High School Age Students With Special Needs The Four Situations For Subtraction, K. A. D. Miller, Audrey C. Rule, V. M. Macentee

Open Educational Resources

All learners, including those who qualify for special education services, should have access to learning mathematical concepts. This study examined the efficacy of using hands-on sets of materials to teach two high school students with mental retardation the four situations for subtraction. This is a mixed methods study using a simple pretest-posttest design to determine correct interpretation of subtraction story problems for different situations (take-away, comparison, completion, and whole-part-part) and correct regrouping during dynamic subtraction. Eight story problems were presented to the two participants eight weeks prior to instruction; students answered an identical posttest after twelve half-hour lessons on subtraction …

Doping Of A One-Dimensional Mott Insulator: Photoemission And Optical Studies Of Sr2cu03+Δ, Tim Kidd, T. Valla, P. D. Johnson, K. W. Kim, G. D. Gu, C. C. Homes Feb 2008

Doping Of A One-Dimensional Mott Insulator: Photoemission And Optical Studies Of Sr2cu03+Δ, Tim Kidd, T. Valla, P. D. Johnson, K. W. Kim, G. D. Gu, C. C. Homes

Faculty Work

Angle-resolved photoemission and optical spectroscopy are used to probe the electronic structure of the one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr2CuO3+δ, both at half-filling and with small concentrations of excess oxygen doping. Spin-charge separation can be seen as evidenced by the existence of spinon and holon branches in the photoemission spectra. Optical studies reveal no significant doping dependence, while photoemission studies show a large energy shift in the spinon and holon states with respect to the main valence band states which remain nearly unaffected. The results suggest the excess dopant carriers are incorporated solely within the one-dimensional Hubbard band …

We All Teach The Nature Of Science - Whether Accurately Or Not, Michael P. Clough Jan 2008

We All Teach The Nature Of Science - Whether Accurately Or Not, Michael P. Clough

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The phrase “nature of science” (NOS) is often used in referring to issues such as what science is, how it works, the assumptions underlying the doing of science, how scientists operate as a social group and how society itself both influences and reacts to scientific endeavors. These and many other thoughts regarding the NOS are informed by contributions from several disciplines including, but not limited to, the history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology of science.

Aerobic And Anaerobic Respiration: Inquiry Compared To Traditional Pedagogical Approaches, Sarah A. Sanderson, Tanya Gupta, Kimberly A. Penning Jan 2008

Aerobic And Anaerobic Respiration: Inquiry Compared To Traditional Pedagogical Approaches, Sarah A. Sanderson, Tanya Gupta, Kimberly A. Penning

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article discusses and compares two approaches to teaching students about aerobic and anaerobic respiration. One approach was to have students take part in a common cookbook activity where a preset procedure is followed. In the second approach, students completed the same activity, th but in a more inquiry-oriented fashion. Each approach was implemented in two 10 grade classes. Students experiencing the inquiry approach were observed spending more time discussing the targeted concepts, and they performed better on the end-of-unit test. This article addresses National Science Education Standards A, C, and G and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, …

Weapons Of Mass Instruction: The Teacher’S Crucial Role In Promoting A Deep Understanding Of Conservation Of Mass, Matthew Moffitt, Joseph Miller Jan 2008

Weapons Of Mass Instruction: The Teacher’S Crucial Role In Promoting A Deep Understanding Of Conservation Of Mass, Matthew Moffitt, Joseph Miller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Conservation of mass is a counter-intuitive idea that students struggle to fully comprehend (Stavy, 1990). This article presents a modified version of a conservation of mass demonstration. The original activity has much potential, but here we make clear the teacher's role that is necessary for promoting inquiry and deep mental engagement. We also discuss the use of several instructional “weapons” we have successfully used to enhance learning: questioning, wait time, listening, and nonverbal communication with students. We include numerous sample questions that we ask to encourage students to share their ideas, and help students come to the desired understanding. This …
