International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities
Pomegranate (Punica graantum) peels as an agricultural waste was used as an adsorbent for removal of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn ions from simulated aqueous solutions. The adsorption process was carried out using the batch method. Various effective parameters such as pH, initial metal ion concentration, and adsorbent dose, shaking time, particle size and temperature were investigated. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of Punica graantum peels were done. The efficiency of Punica graantum peels toward removal of metal ions was ordered as Pb2+ < Cr6+ < Cu2+ < Cd2+ < Zn2+ < Ni2+, with the …
Weaving A Rhetorical Web: Hillary Clinton's Presidential Announcement Speech, Nichola D. Gutgold
Weaving A Rhetorical Web: Hillary Clinton's Presidential Announcement Speech, Nichola D. Gutgold
Iowa Journal of Communication
Hillary Rodham Clinton suffered a difficult relationship with the press as first lady, and though she successfully won a senate seat and re-election in New York, she had to re-introduce herself to a national audience. In a You-Tube style presentation that featured the first lady turned senator and aspiring presidential candidate comfortably seated in her well appointed living room, Clinton promised to "start a conversation" with voters. Hillary Clinton's announcement speech embodied the characteristics of feminine political rhetoric, combined with the use of electronic media to fashion an image of the candidate that was at once reminiscent, modern, and novel.

Defining Family: Naming, Orientation, And Redemption In The Case Of Terri Schiavo, M. Chad Mcbride, Karen L. Daas, Paige W. Toller
Iowa Journal of Communication
This paper undertakes a detailed analysis of the Terri Schiavo case as it was covered in popular media. Drawing on Burkean theory, we argue a critical issue in the case was a struggle between Terri's parents and husband to be seen as the more legitimate family in order to determine the duration and extent of Terri's medical care. We discuss how the private debate over Terri's health and the decision to remove her feeding tube entered into the public scenes of legal and political action. This shift to the public scene represented problems for the parties directly involved in the …

An Exploration Of The Diagnostic Criterion, Etiology, And Treatment Of Binge Eating Disorder, Amy C. Ebert
Graduate Research Papers
An exploration of the DSM IV-TR research diagnostic criterion of Binge Eating Disorder (BED), its etiology, and viable treatments was conducted. The purpose of this literature review was to provide more information for mental health professionals treating clients who may fit the criteria for BED. Published research literature and treatment manuals were utilized in this review. It was concluded that there are many potential risk/maintenance factors linked to the development of BED, and that treatment interventions involving mindfulness appear to be effective in minimizing the symptoms of BED. Given the current obesity statistics among U.S. adults, it seems quite important …

I participated in the Live from the Field Earthwatch Expedition - Mammals of Nova Scotia, through a fellowship awarded by Wells Fargo. During this experience I participated in research to study the abundance of mammals in Nova Scotia and determine the effect of climate change on natural systems. After this experience I developed an inquiry project for my students in which they study the populations of insects. The students develop their own questions, collect data and make sense of their research. By investigating populations, students are encouraged to see the wonderful biodiversity right in their backyard! This article Promotes National …

Food For Thought: The Imagination-Intellect And The Role Of Empathy, Mary E. Weems
Iowa Journal of Communication
This auto/ethnographic essay expands upon my imagination-intellect theory (See: Weems, 2003) by exploring the role of empathy in developing a social consciousness, which is its fifth component. In it, I describe my creative process and discuss the various degrees of empathy I've experienced. It includes three creative writings as exemplars of the kinds of empathy I continue to explore in my work and to facilitate with teacher education and other students at the university and k-12 level.
The Segmented Assimilation Approach To Immigration And Adaptation: I Am The "New Second Generation", Charee Mooney
The Segmented Assimilation Approach To Immigration And Adaptation: I Am The "New Second Generation", Charee Mooney
Iowa Journal of Communication
The segmented assimilation approach is a sociological theory that examines the assimilation outcomes of second generation immigrant peoples, or those born in the United States with at least one foreign-born parent. This is the story of how l a Vietnamese immigrant child, researched segmented assimilation as I grappled to understand why other immigrant children seemed to be on so many different life paths. This is also the story of how I avoided and then attempted to confront and reclaim my lived experiences. In the process, I realized that family solidarity and support have always been my reason and my purpose.
Walking With Grandma Through Cancer And Caregiving, Mindi Ann Golden
Walking With Grandma Through Cancer And Caregiving, Mindi Ann Golden
Iowa Journal of Communication
This autoethnographic account employs Continuity Theory to examine my experience caregiving for my grandmother in the last year of her life. Little is known about grandchildren as caregivers. I use the routine of walking at the beach with my grandmother to frame my caregiving journey. Our walks implicitly reflect a desire and drive for continuity in the context of profound change. I explicitly discuss internal and external continuity across various contexts and situations throughout my year as a caregiver.

Contradicting (My)Self: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Whiteness, Heteronormativity, And Masculinity, Brandon D. Stow
Iowa Journal of Communication
This piece utilizes performative writing, poetry, and autoethnographic personal narrative to explore tensions that emerge from the clash between my "academic identity" as a critical scholar and my subject position as a heterosexual white male. These pieces focus on interrogating social, cultural, and political systems of power utilizing performance autoethnography as a tool with which to deconstruct whiteness and heteronormative privilege. This piece offers an in-depth, performative gaze at what the critical negotiation of whiteness looks and feels like on the level of lived experience.

Promoting The Development Of Creativity In Students, Amy M. Anderson
Promoting The Development Of Creativity In Students, Amy M. Anderson
Graduate Research Papers
Creativity may contribute to student success in each of ASCA's key areas of student development: career, academic, and personal-social. However, the wide range of theoretical constructs of creativity may impede school counselors seeking methods for supporting creative development. This literature review explores various definitions of creativity and suggests a recently proposed developmental model may be most useful to school counselors in conceptualizing all students as creative and capable of growth. Using this model, the paper examines research into factors influencing creativity, including personality, self-efficacy, appropriate feedback, the perception of judgment, mood and affect, and motivation, and suggests practical ways school …

Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kalen J. Espy
Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kalen J. Espy
Graduate Research Papers
Reactive Attachment Disorder, or RAD, has several possible causes usually stemming from traumatic childhood events. The attachment disorders were initially explored in 1948 by John Bowlby which led to the attachment theory being established in the 1960's. Attachment is the bond a child makes with other human beings, allowing for a healthy emotional and psychological growth. Attachment is developed primarily from birth to two years of age and up to the age of five.
There are four attachment styles and four phases that a child must go through to develop a healthy attachment to a caregiver. A child who is …

Investigating Solutions Through Inquiry, Dana Frits, Chris Siguenza
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In this article we discuss how many activities have valuable ideas, but important modifications must be made to make the activity more effective and mentally engaging. This article discusses the modification of a “cookbook” solubility lab into an inquiry activity, which increases student decisions and the promotion of higher-order thinking skills. We also address the critical role of the teacher in making the lesson effective. This article promotes National Science Education Standards A, B and G and Iowa Teaching Standards 2, 3, 4, and 6.

Learning Theories: Pillars Of Teacher Decision-Making, Jerrid Kruse
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In the last issue, I articulated the argument that learning “styles” are not the most valuable way to understand learners. Yet, if learning “styles” do not sufficiently explain learning, how can we better conceptualize learning to inform our instruction?
