The Degree Of Extensional Agreement Among Twenty Psychologists In Their Use Of The Labels Hypothesis, Theory And Law, Wendell Johnson, John T. Wilson Jan 1945

The Degree Of Extensional Agreement Among Twenty Psychologists In Their Use Of The Labels Hypothesis, Theory And Law, Wendell Johnson, John T. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study represents an attempt to measure the degree of extensional agreement among a group of psychologists in their usage of certain labels, which were familiar to and commonly employed by all members of the group. Specifically, the problem was to measure the degree of agreement among the twenty psychologists as to the applicability of the three labels, hypothesis, theory and law to a group of twenty statements, each of which had been labelled in one of the three ways by the original author of the statement.

A Method For Evaluation And Equation Of Test Forms, Mary Dodds, Barbara Day, A. R. Lauer Jan 1945

A Method For Evaluation And Equation Of Test Forms, Mary Dodds, Barbara Day, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Notwithstanding the pioneer work of Spearman (1927 (and numerous studies by Thurstone on problems of intelligence, most testing programs seem to postulate only one type of intelligence. Division of the total score may be made into arbitrary categories for use in advising students but the program itself does not seem to conform to accepted theory on the subject. There has been little change in the administration of the program. This is partly due to the elaborate nature of test materials used. To save labor in developing a test it has been customary to build a long one to cover a …

Your Eyes Reveal The Secrets Of Your Interests, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1944

Your Eyes Reveal The Secrets Of Your Interests, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous methods have been employed and tests devised for the purpose of measuring interest and interest values. Subjective measures open to the usual errors of personal judgment, prejudice and observation are those requiring an oral or written response. When individuals are questioned about their interests or preferences, they may not know them accurately or be inclined to answer according to what is expected, or find difficulty in expressing what they feel. Testing interests is for the above reasons often cumbersome and unreliable. In addition to the limitations stated above, individuals, when required to make a verbal or written response, often …

Clinical Analysis Of A Specific Case In Remedial Reading, Evelyn C. Courtney Jan 1944

Clinical Analysis Of A Specific Case In Remedial Reading, Evelyn C. Courtney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A great many studies of group differences in reading speed and comprehension have been reported, notably, by Gates (2), Gray (3), Betts (1), and others, but very few intensive studies of individual cases have been published. The specific case herein reported is that of C, a normal, healthy, well-developed high school boy of sixteen years. He came to the Psychology Department at Iowa State College upon recommendation of a private tutor to receive clinical help in remedial reading. The case was delegated to the writer as a specific problem in educational psychology. The problem developed, it seems, when C was …

Scholastic Progress Of Students Entering The Iowa State College With Low High School Averages, John L. Holmes Jan 1944

Scholastic Progress Of Students Entering The Iowa State College With Low High School Averages, John L. Holmes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall quarters of 1939 and 1940 students entering the Iowa State College directly from high school with averages below 1.5l1 were grouped together in a "pre-admission guidance" program. In the two years considered, ninety-six students with high school averages below 1.51 entered the Iowa State College. The program was the same for both years. The students included in the program were asked to be on the campus two days before regular freshman week began. During these two days they were given tests of scholastic ability, silent reading skills, English and mathematics achievement. Fall quarter class schedules were made …

The Iowa Academy Of Science In Relation To Its Contributions To The Welfare Of The Commonwealth Of The State And Nation, J. N. Martin Jan 1944

The Iowa Academy Of Science In Relation To Its Contributions To The Welfare Of The Commonwealth Of The State And Nation, J. N. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

State Academies have seemingly had their greatest success in the Central-Western states. In these states the more isolated conditions of the scientific workers made the need for such organizations keenly felt. But, important as the academies have been in broadening and shaping the scientific views and attitudes of their members and in stimulating the scientific endeavors of its members and others within the scope of their influence, they quite early in their history took on another function of great importance. They soon began to serve in advisory capacities on various scientific problems concerning the welfare of the state and even …

A Study Of The Improvement Of Reading Rate And Comprehension, Louise Brown, A. R. Lauer, Edith Uhl Jan 1944

A Study Of The Improvement Of Reading Rate And Comprehension, Louise Brown, A. R. Lauer, Edith Uhl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most studies of reading have dealt with one or the other of two factors involved: (a) speed and (b.) comprehension. The psychological act of obtaining meaning from the printed page is very involved, as in any process of symbolic interpretation. It is here contended that either of the two factors cited is in itself inadequate and that they must be combined to give a meaningful index of accomplishment. Such a concept is herein described as the reading efficiency index and is obtained by multiplying the rate in words per minute by the comprehension calculated in per cent. It compares favorably …

The Correlation Of Reading Rate With Intelligence Scores Of Grade School Children After Training In Phonics, Lester N. Gill, Myrtle Paine Gill Jan 1944

The Correlation Of Reading Rate With Intelligence Scores Of Grade School Children After Training In Phonics, Lester N. Gill, Myrtle Paine Gill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is generally conceded that one learns more through the use of the eyes than through any of the other sense organs. Much of this visual learning is the result of reading. The present study was undertaken to try to determine if special training in phonics would improve reading ability, since there has been some difference of opinion concerning the value of phonics as an aid in teaching reading.

The Attention Value Of Color Evaluated By Means Of Ocular Photography, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1943

The Attention Value Of Color Evaluated By Means Of Ocular Photography, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Innumerable research studies have been made to evaluate the intensity of color. The general consensus of opinion is that color has attentional advantages over black and white, and in order to gain and sustain attention a bit of chroma thrown in will generally solve the problem. The purpose of this study was to evaluate by means of ocular photography. The attensity of red as compared to black and white of a given field. Fifty subjects were selected at random to observe an exposure card, while their eye movements were photographed. Two advertisements, one in color and the other in black …
