Co-Variation Of Cynicism And Idealism, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1947

Co-Variation Of Cynicism And Idealism, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Last year (1946) two papers were presented before the psychology section of the Iowa Academy of Science by Mr. Charles O. Neidt and the author of this paper, dealing with the construction and statistical analysis of a test designed to measure the variables of cynicism and idealism. The test, consisting of 200 items, is called a "Practical Policy Test" in order to avoid indicating its exact nature to the subject. The details of administering the test will not be repeated here (1), except to say that a four-point scale was used in order to secure graded responses as follows: A-very …

Improvement Of Test Criteria, A. R. Lauer Jan 1947

Improvement Of Test Criteria, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Perhaps no other science is as conscious of validity coefficients as psychology. This may be partly due to the impetus given statistical methods by such early investigators as Galton, Pearson, Yule, and Spearman. Later work by Thurstone, Fisher, Holzinger, Garret and others has kept the profession highly conscious of the need for refined and, in some instances, involved statistical evaluation. In certain types of experimental work, such as mental testing, it is highly essential to keep the validity of tests high. It is, of course, taken for granted that in any science accurate measuring instruments are available for use without …

Positive Transfer As A Factor In Memory, Richard Wellington Husband Jan 1947

Positive Transfer As A Factor In Memory, Richard Wellington Husband

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is but reiteration to observe that once a skill has been acquired or a problem solved, the second attempt at that or a similar task will be accomplished with greater efficiency, lesser expenditure of time or effort, or both. Such improvement may be due either to memory or transfer of training-memory when repetition of the same performance is requested at a later date, and transfer when a different but more or less similar task is to be done. Memory is commonly measured by one of two principal ways: by amount retained, and by relearning. The latter method gives an …

Certain Factors Affecting The Legibility Of Stop Signs, A. R. Lauer, L. F. Embree Jan 1947

Certain Factors Affecting The Legibility Of Stop Signs, A. R. Lauer, L. F. Embree

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the evolution of highway signs, the square or rectangular shape was first used to indicate any conditions which might affect driving on the highway. When it became necessary to differentiate between conditions along the right-of-way from conditions on the right-of-way, it was decided to rotate the square sign 45 degrees and let the diamond-shaped sign stand for curves, dips, hills, and other conditions on the roadway proper. Later, when a sign was needed to indicate STOP someone suggested cutting off the corners and making an octagonal sign of the diamond. The round sign was adopted as the designation for …

A Comparison Of The Minnesota Personality Scale And The Bell Adjustment Inventory For Student Counseling, George D. Lovell, Gloria Laurie, Doris Marvin Jan 1947

A Comparison Of The Minnesota Personality Scale And The Bell Adjustment Inventory For Student Counseling, George D. Lovell, Gloria Laurie, Doris Marvin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to report the findings concerning the comparative diagnostic value of two personality tests, the Bell Adjustment Inventory (Student form) and the Minnesota Personality Scale, for use in student counseling. The Bell Adjustment Inventory has been used for the past six years as a part of the battery of tests given during New Student Days at Grinnell College, with apparently satisfactory results. However, with the development of the new Minnesota Personality Scale, it was felt by the college personnel department that perhaps this test would prove of even greater diagnostic value in the counseling program.

Progress Report On Revision Of Curriculum In Biology For Iowa High Schools, Richard F. Trump Jan 1947

Progress Report On Revision Of Curriculum In Biology For Iowa High Schools, Richard F. Trump

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When our committee submitted a list of objectives for high school biology to one of our colleagues for criticism, he commented in the margin, "Making objectives has been a favorite indoor sport of educators for a number of years; but attaining the objectives is a different species of animal!" From the outset of our investigation we have been aware that we could contribute very little to science teaching by producing a better set of aims or objectives. We know that for a long time teachers with good objectives have taught poor biology, while other teachers with the same objectives-or with …

Basic Concepts In The Interpretation Of Visual Phenomena, Theodore Louis Jahn Jan 1947

Basic Concepts In The Interpretation Of Visual Phenomena, Theodore Louis Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the past decade several attempts have been made to formulate equations which would explain certain visual phenomena, namely flicker fusion frequency, brightness discrimination, visual acuity, and instantaneous thresholds as functions of intensity, and light and dark adaptation as functions of time. These various equations are based on several fundamental concepts regarding the mechanism by which the visual sensation is determined. Each concept has been explained by the original author at the time the theory was proposed, but no comparison of these basic ideas has yet appeared in the literature. The purpose of the present paper is to make such …

Some Personality Traits Of Collegiate Underachievers, Wilma C. Winberg Jan 1947

Some Personality Traits Of Collegiate Underachievers, Wilma C. Winberg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to identify certain measurable personality traits characteristic of scholastic underachievement from the results of selected personality tests. Underachievement is defined in terms of a negative discrepancy between predicted and achieved grade point averages. Measurable personality traits are defined in terms of item respom1es on three personality inventories of 543 items. Current work on personality and personality testing tends to reveal that personality is environmentally conditioned. To date, most personality tests have been validated by the method of internal consistency and not against an external criterion. A preliminary survey suggested that academic underachievers are somewhat …

Relation Of Cynicism To Certain Other Variables, Charles O. Neidt Jan 1946

Relation Of Cynicism To Certain Other Variables, Charles O. Neidt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is not uncommon to hear the remark "He's a cynic", or "He has a cynical attitude" expressed in everyday conversation. During the course of an investigation designed to develop a test of cynicism, certain data were available for study in connection with cynical responses. These data were analyzed to answer several questions concerning cynicism and certain other variables. For example, are college men more cynical than women? What is the relation to religion, politics, and marriage? Does cynicism increase with age-or education?

Techniques Used For Improving Visual Efficiency, Robert Allbaugh, Charles Miller Jan 1946

Techniques Used For Improving Visual Efficiency, Robert Allbaugh, Charles Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the war a great many claims were made for methods of increasing visual acuity, decreasing astigmatism, correcting eye muscle balance and even to overcoming color blindness. A veritable wave of cures has arisen to aid young men with borderline vision who desire to enlist in the air corps or other branches of the service requiring nearly perfect vision. The civilian population will probably feel the effects of these remedies which are causing some concern in optical circles. The present authors are attempting to attack the problem experimentally and this paper is presented as a survey of the field as …

A Test Study Of Cynicism And Idealism, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A test of cynicism is being constructed and standardized in order to make available a measurement of another phase of personality. Certain interesting relationships have been studied, part of which will be reported in a separate paper by Mr. Charles O. Neidt, who has been assisting with the statistical work (see Proceedings of the Iowa Academy for 1946).

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, Seventh Edition, H. E. Zabel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The latest directory has appeared during the war when many fields of science are marking time and when we have adopted a policy of interrupting the production of scientists. It thus becomes a landmark and an analysis of the data it presents has special significance. In this directory Iowa has not only maintained her position among the leading states in production of scientists but has slightly improved this relative standing.

The Performance Of Psychopaths On The Wechsler-Bellevue Test, C. R. Strother Jan 1945

The Performance Of Psychopaths On The Wechsler-Bellevue Test, C. R. Strother

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A problem of persistent interest to the clinical psychologist is the discovery of characteristics of performance on psychological tests that will serve to differentiate various clinical groups. Such signs, if they can be found, would be of considerable assistance in determining diagnosis in borderline cases and would greatly enhance the value of clinical psychometrics differentiate these groups. In the course of a study of cases of psychopathic personality, initiated at the University Psychopathic Hospital by Dr. Gottlieb and Dr. Knott, we became interested in an analysis of the psychometric performance of the psychopath and in the relationships between psychometric performance, …
