The Role Of Albedo In Color Discrimination Of Spider Monkeys, Robert Q. Easter, Daryl G. Nichols Jan 1951

The Role Of Albedo In Color Discrimination Of Spider Monkeys, Robert Q. Easter, Daryl G. Nichols

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of color discrimination of animals has been variously discussed by writers. While it is generally conceded that the cones are the receptors of color, the different theories of vision as expounded by Young and Helmholtz, Hering, Ladd-Franklin and others are not always in essential agreement that specific cones are the receptors of specific wave lengths of light. While form discrimination of rats has been clearly demonstrated in the researches of Fields, Fritz, Lashley and others, the discrimination of color by the lower forms of animals is not so well established. Writers also differ as to primates, but since …

Rate Of Manipulative Learning As A Function Of Goal-Setting Techniques, Gerald C. Helmstadter, Douglas S. Ellis Jan 1951

Rate Of Manipulative Learning As A Function Of Goal-Setting Techniques, Gerald C. Helmstadter, Douglas S. Ellis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although most studies involving the use of goals as motivators in learning have been concerned with which types of goals produce the greatest improvement, there have been some indications that the method of presenting a given type of goal may determine its effectiveness.

An Apparatus For Measuring Reaction Time Under Conditions Of Preoccupation, Richard E. Frey Jan 1951

An Apparatus For Measuring Reaction Time Under Conditions Of Preoccupation, Richard E. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It seems axiomatic that visual, auditory, or other stimuli are not raced to as quickly when the observer is preoccupied. Students of accident prevention have pointed out that laboratory measures of re· action time are not representative of everyday life situations where preoccupation and distractions present an entirely different situation from that of controlled laboratory conditions. The present apparatus was designed to measure various response times under controlled conditions, both with and without preoccupation

Comparison Of Form And Color Fields, Harold V. Gaskill Jr., Albert G. Rostenbach, Robert M. Thompson Jan 1951

Comparison Of Form And Color Fields, Harold V. Gaskill Jr., Albert G. Rostenbach, Robert M. Thompson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many studies have been made of the color fields of the eye and some consideration has been given the form fields. With the invention of the microscope by Leeuwenhoeck in 1722, who first made a study of the retina of the frog, much interest has been shown in the structure and functions of the retina. Some of the world's greatest histologists such as Cajal, Mueller and others have studied the structural characteristics of the retina. Very little attention has been given the functions of the retina from the point of view of psychology.

Differential Interests Of Agricultural College Students As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, John A. Bath Jan 1950

Differential Interests Of Agricultural College Students As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, John A. Bath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Kuder Preference Record has enjoyed wide usage as a counselor's aid in determining categorical interests of individuals. Many studies have been made in an attempt to discover differential interests of occupational groups and of those engaged in the pursuit of various college curricula. Such significant differences in interests as are found have been deemed to be of valuable assistance to the vocational and educational counselor. So far as the writer has been able to discover, little use has been made of the Kuder Preference Record in the measurement of interests of college students pursuing an agricultural curriculum. This may …

Response Of Veterinarians To The Strong Vocational Interest Blank For Men, Thomas E. Hannum Jan 1950

Response Of Veterinarians To The Strong Vocational Interest Blank For Men, Thomas E. Hannum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The selection of students for the veterinary college at Iowa State College has become a real problem. Every year several times the enrollment capacity applies for entrance, and from this large group the few who are to be allowed admission must be carefully selected. In selecting these students, chief reliance has been placed on past scholastic records, both high school and pre-professional training in college, and upon various measures of scholastic aptitude. At present, a veterinary aptitude test is being developed by W. A. Owens of the Department of Psychology and L. C. Payne, School of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State …

Development Of A Test Of Aptitude For Veterinary Medicine, William A. Owens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Particularly since the war, schools of veterinary medicine have been able to enroll for training only a relatively small percentage of their applicants. An increased emphasis upon the importance of identifying the best qualified candidates has resulted in a careful reexamination of selection procedures and in recognition of the possible utilization of some sort of veterinary aptitude test.

Motor Responses As A Function Of Type Of Conflict, Burton G. Andreas Jan 1950

Motor Responses As A Function Of Type Of Conflict, Burton G. Andreas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In his introduction to a discussion of experimental studies of conflict, Neal E. Miller (2) states that "conflict is produced by competition between incompatible responses." He goes on to say, however, that such response phenomena as hesitation, vacillation, or complete blocking are not found in all situations where there are competing response tendencies. The extent to which they appear is a function of the type of conflict situation. Using human subjects in a series of experiments on motor conflict, Hovland and Sears (1) confirmed this prediction from theory. These investigators studied the effects of two types of conflict - double-approach …

Some Recent Changes In Rural Living Which Have Psychological Implications, William H. Dreier Jan 1950

Some Recent Changes In Rural Living Which Have Psychological Implications, William H. Dreier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Eric Johnston, president of the Motion Picture Association of America told the American Farm Bureau Federation in Chicago last December, "A few years ago our Department of Agriculture entitled its yearbook, 'Farmers in a Changing World.' That was a good title, but I think a better one would have been 'A World of Changing Farmers.'" As teachers and instructors of students from rural communities we are part of this world of changing farmers here in the United States. Since the time and example of the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ, the best teachers have known about the environment in which they …

Factorial Study Of Speed Of Response In Simple Cancellation Tasks, Dale W. Dysinger Jan 1950

Factorial Study Of Speed Of Response In Simple Cancellation Tasks, Dale W. Dysinger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several factor analyses have been conducted with the objective of isolating the aspects of the stimulus situation affecting performance on simple tasks presented under the set for speed as well as accuracy. The factors in this area of performance have not proved to be as stable as have some in the areas of verbal, spatial, and numerical skills. In a recent factor analysis, [1], several new hypotheses were presented to account for the apparent instability of the perceptual-speed domain. One of these hypotheses was that three or more linearly independent factors must be postulated to account for the variance of …

An Empirical Study Of Scoring Methods For The Conover Driving Attitude Inventory, T. E. Hannum, Gerald C. Helmstadter, A. R. Lauer, David H. Soule Jan 1950

An Empirical Study Of Scoring Methods For The Conover Driving Attitude Inventory, T. E. Hannum, Gerald C. Helmstadter, A. R. Lauer, David H. Soule

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The measurement of driving attitudes has followed in the wake of various studies and statistical data indicating that improper attitudes are responsible for an unduly high percentage of accidents. Certain of these tests have limitations, one of which is an economical method of scoring. Conover (Conover, 1947) used a scoring method such that the values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, are assigned respectively to the responses designated as; most displeasing, displeasing, indifferent, pleasing, and most pleasing, for the positive items, and to avoid negative scores the values 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, are assigned respectively to the same responses; most …

A Method For Measurement Of Perceptual Time On The Highway, Donald A. Hoppe Jan 1950

A Method For Measurement Of Perceptual Time On The Highway, Donald A. Hoppe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A major handicap for studies of perceptual time on the highway has been the lack of an adequate means of simultaneously starting a chronoscope and exposing a highway situation to a subject. The problem is better appreciated when it is realized that on the one hand the subject's vision must be restricted from the situation to be exposed. On the other hand he must be permitted to view the road for a certain distance ahead of the car. The latter is necessary to allow for adjustment of the eyes to the existing level of illumination and for adaptation of the …

A Forced-Choice Rating Scale For College Instructors, A. R. Rustebakke, George D. Lovell, Charles F. Haner Jan 1950

A Forced-Choice Rating Scale For College Instructors, A. R. Rustebakke, George D. Lovell, Charles F. Haner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to construct a forced-choice rating scale for evaluating students' opinions of college instructors. The scale constructed consists of 20 tetrads, or groups of 4 statements descriptive of instructors. These statements were chosen so that a pair of favorable items, both appearing to be equally favorable, and a pair of unfavorable items, both appearing to be equally unfavorable, make up each tetrad. From each tetrad the rater must choose the item most characteristic and the item least characteristic of the ratee. The reason for choosing items in this manner can be seen in Sisson's statement …

"Single-Trial-Per-Task" Versus "Multiple-Trials-Per-Task" In The Acquisition Of Skill In Performing Several Similar Tasks, Dorothy E. Mcallister Jan 1950

"Single-Trial-Per-Task" Versus "Multiple-Trials-Per-Task" In The Acquisition Of Skill In Performing Several Similar Tasks, Dorothy E. Mcallister

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present experiment was an attempt to discover the relative merits of two different practice procedures in developing skill in the performance of psychomotor tasks. Specifically, the aim was to determine whether one trial per day on each of eight different but similar tasks for eight consecutive days would result in better performance on a. test task than would eight trials per day for eight consecutive days each involving a different but similar task.

An Apparatus To Mleasure Reaction Time Under Mobile Conditions By Radio Control, Reginald N. Kjerland, A. R. Lauer Jan 1950

An Apparatus To Mleasure Reaction Time Under Mobile Conditions By Radio Control, Reginald N. Kjerland, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Certain types of studies of driving performance require mobile equipment for use in making objective measurements of behavior under actual traffic conditions. Due to the inherent dangers of stationary apparatus being used on the highway it becomes important that satisfactory portable and mobile equipment be used to facilitate objective measurements of drivers in traffic, highway and driving research.

Effect Of Shock On Performance In A Paired-Associate Learning Task, Eli Saltz Jan 1950

Effect Of Shock On Performance In A Paired-Associate Learning Task, Eli Saltz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hullian psychology conceptualizes the effects of noxious stimulation as drive producing and the effects of removal of such stimulation as a rewarding state of affairs (3). These effects have been repeatedly demonstrated in situations where they have facilitated learning (2, 4). It is obvious, however, that increased drive need not necessarily aid learning, and it may at times hinder it. The present study is concerned with the consequences for learning when electric shock is introduced at the same time as the stimulus word and is removed when the response word is spoken in paired-associate learning. The study is particularly interested …

Reliability Of The O'Connor Block Test, Richard H. Bunch, R. N. Kjerland, A. R. Lauer Jan 1950

Reliability Of The O'Connor Block Test, Richard H. Bunch, R. N. Kjerland, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The O'Connor Block test is widely known and is manufactured and sold without any very definite information as to its reliability and validity. In fact it seems to be used without great uniformity in method of administration. Whenever mechanical ability is discussed one is likely to hear of this test along with several others. No published studies of the O'Connor Block test of any great importance have been made on its relative merits and its reliability and validity. Several years ago exploratory studies on this test, along with others designed to measure mechanical aptitude and ingenuity, were conducted in the …

Relation Of The Fritz-Neidt Practical Policy Test To Freshman: Entrance Tests, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1950

Relation Of The Fritz-Neidt Practical Policy Test To Freshman: Entrance Tests, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Previous investigations, reported to the Psychology Section of the Iowa Academy of Science, have been concerned with the development of a test designed to measure cynicism and idealism. Since the nature of the items used, the theory of the construction, the manner of administration, and the method of scoring have already been described (see references), no attempt will be made to consider these details in this paper.
