An Investigation Of The Judged Complexity Of Stimuli With High Information Content, Steve J. Zyzanski, Sheldon K. Edelman, George G. Karas Jan 1962

An Investigation Of The Judged Complexity Of Stimuli With High Information Content, Steve J. Zyzanski, Sheldon K. Edelman, George G. Karas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The complexity of stimuli with high "constructed complexity" was judged by 40 subjects on an equal-appearing intervals scale. Earlier studies had employed stimuli of lower constructed complexity, and it was felt that the judgment task would prove more difficult when the constructed complexity was increased. Results showed that subjects experienced no difficulty in making the judgments-as constructed complexity increased, so did judged complexity. It was suggested that magnitude estimation might be a more appropriate means of assessing judged complexity than equal-appearing intervals for future studies.

Equal Rest-Work Ratios Under Massed And Distributed Conditions Of Practice, B. L. Kintz Jan 1962

Equal Rest-Work Ratios Under Massed And Distributed Conditions Of Practice, B. L. Kintz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Groups of subjects practiced operating the Multipoint Two-Hand Coordinator under various rest-work ratios. It was found that the groups which had equal ratios of rest-work, regardless of the absolute amount of time spent on either, performed at equal levels. Since many studies in the literature report different intervals of rest and work, making numerical comparisons between studies difficult, it is suggested on the basis of these results that equal rest-work ratios might be a useful comparison variable. Evidence was presented to support a hypothesis that groups practicing under massed conditions develop SIR (permanent work decrement), but distributed practice groups do …

Explorations In The Measurement Of Empathy As Analytical Predictive Ability, Calvin J. Daane, Gordon J. Rhum Jan 1962

Explorations In The Measurement Of Empathy As Analytical Predictive Ability, Calvin J. Daane, Gordon J. Rhum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This was a preliminary effort to develop a scale for the measurement of empathy as analytical predictive ability. The approach embodied the use of 20 words in three contexts; the 60 rating elements comprised the scale. Extent of agreement between self ratings of a person to be judged (reader) and the estimates of those ratings by a group of persons (judges) was used as a measure of empathic ability. An attempt to take into account possible spurious influences on the empathy scores was not fruitful. The standard materials, including a filmed version of the reader's behavior, were used with several …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Individual And Group Counseling On The Development Of Creativity In A Selected Sample Of Eighth And Ninth Grade Girls, Marjorie B. Fish Jan 1962

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Individual And Group Counseling On The Development Of Creativity In A Selected Sample Of Eighth And Ninth Grade Girls, Marjorie B. Fish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

With today's tremendous impetus toward creating new products, new ideas, and new and frequently bizarre approaches to problems and solutions, the school faces a serious and most formidable problem. It consists of not only keeping pace with these new accomplishments, but also of helping pupils develop into adults who can contribute to further explorations in the creating of ideas. The creativity of the future will be found in tomorrow's adults--and these are today's pupils.

An In-Service Training Course For Teacher-Counselors In New Zealand High Schools, Jean M. Herbison Jan 1962

An In-Service Training Course For Teacher-Counselors In New Zealand High Schools, Jean M. Herbison

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Human beings are extremely complicated creatures living in a very complex world. To enable young people to adjust to the complexity of the modern society, assistance is given through the guidance services in schools. This is no longer a service peculiar to any one school system, but a principle which is accepted in most countries throughout the world. The United States of America has led the field in the guidance movement and many of the problems now facing other countries have been solved in some measure by the initiative of research investigators and practice of educators in America. It is …

The Association Value Of Thirty Meaningful Words, Paul R. Hager, Marilyn E. Marshall Jan 1961

The Association Value Of Thirty Meaningful Words, Paul R. Hager, Marilyn E. Marshall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forty-one men and women undergraduates individually wrote down the verbal associations arising in relation to each of 30 three-letter meaningful words, with a time allowance of 1 min. per word. The association value of each word was defined as the mean number of "acceptable" words written in response to it. Two sets of words were then chosen from the list for subsequent use as response terms in a verbal-motor transfer experiment. One set, formally similar, was found to have a mean association value of 8.752. The other set, formally distinct, had a satisfactorily comparable mean association value of 8.792.

An Analysis Of The Content Of Perceptual Responses To Randomly Derived Stimuli, George G. Karas, Sheldon K. Edelman, Steve Zyzanski, Don Goodrich Jan 1961

An Analysis Of The Content Of Perceptual Responses To Randomly Derived Stimuli, George G. Karas, Sheldon K. Edelman, Steve Zyzanski, Don Goodrich

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to understand the role of the stimulus in form perception, an analysis of perceptual responses and stimulus characteristics must be undertaken. Previous research was focused upon the characteristics of the stimulus. This study presents a first approach to categorization of response.

Objective, randomly-derived stimuli were presented tachistoscopically to Ss, who responded with their associations to the stimuli. The data suggest that the categories are meaningful ways of construing these responses. Some categories seem to be basic, while others require further differentiation. Hypotheses for future research have been obtained from these data.

The Relative Discriminability Of Twelve Random Shapes, L. E. Carver, Marilyn E. Marshall Jan 1961

The Relative Discriminability Of Twelve Random Shapes, L. E. Carver, Marilyn E. Marshall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

From twelve randomly derived visual shapes, six were to be chosen, if possible, which were mutually equally discriminable. The chosen six were subsequently to be used as stimuli in a verbal-motor transfer task. The two members of all possible pairs of the twelve shapes, including "same" pairs, were presented in succession by means of an automatic slide projector, the exposure time for each member being .25 sec. "Same" or "different" judgments made by 12 subjects after the presentation of each pair, were 98% correct, making useful differentiation among the 12 shapes impossible. Difficulty of discrimination was increased by presenting the …

An Experimental Comparison Of Associative Responses To Two Types Of Randomly Derived Stimuli, George G. Karas, Sheldon K. Edelman, Richard J. Farrell, Thomas E. Dubois Jan 1961

An Experimental Comparison Of Associative Responses To Two Types Of Randomly Derived Stimuli, George G. Karas, Sheldon K. Edelman, Richard J. Farrell, Thomas E. Dubois

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two methods for constructing random shapes were compared as to their effect upon latency of the associative response. Attneave and Arnoult had hypothesized that their Method II shapes would contain less stimulus information than would their Method I shapes. In the present study this hypothesis was substantiated only for female subjects. It was concluded that a reduction in stimulus information could not alone account for these results and that subject variables such as set and response threshold variability, must be included in the interpretation of results.

A Survey Of Articles Pertaining To Education Appearing In Selected Non-Professional Magazines During The Five-Year Period 1953-1957, Gerald Eugene Dockum Jan 1961

A Survey Of Articles Pertaining To Education Appearing In Selected Non-Professional Magazines During The Five-Year Period 1953-1957, Gerald Eugene Dockum

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There are very few people who are not earnestly interested in education, especially if they have children of their own enrolled in school. Nearly all of these people realize that the school is one of the most important agencies which exert an influence upon their children and which should provide them with the tools to develop for themselves a future of the type parents normally desire for their children. This, plus the fact that education is publicly-supported, makes a vast majority of the people of our country vitally interested in our system of public education.

Critical Analyses Of Selected One-Act Plays For Use In Junior High School, Alice Margaret Hayes Jan 1961

Critical Analyses Of Selected One-Act Plays For Use In Junior High School, Alice Margaret Hayes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Production of plays and participation in plays should be integral parts of the junior high school program today, and there is a need for a critical analysis of plays of value and worth to the age-group that comprises the enrollment in a junior high school (ages 12-14). Lists of plays are available for the senior high school and for the elementary school but few studies have been made of plays suitable for the junior high school. There is no known analysis of such plays; hence, the need for this study. To know what is meant by plays of value and …

Guides For The Elementary Teacher In The Playing Of Selected Simple Rhythmic, Melodic And Harmonic Instruments, Lorraine Salome Augustyn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"There are no first, second, third fourth, fifth or sixth graders in the elementary schools of Appleton, Wisconsin. Children are ungraded. They are neither promoted nor failed. They do not receive report cards. Under Appleton's Continuous Progress Plan, youngsters move along as fast as their individual abilities can take them. Free from the artificial limits of grade requirements they push on beyond these arbitrary boundaries. In the process they meet the toughest competitive challenge in the world--the challenge to achieve their highest capacity.'

Thus, does Arthur Morse describe the educational philosophy of the Appleton Elementary Public Schools. This philosophy is …

Lost Worlds: Three Original One-Act Plays, Alice Hickey Flinn Jan 1961

Lost Worlds: Three Original One-Act Plays, Alice Hickey Flinn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Someone has said that the urge to create literature is common to most of mankind. "Everyone wants to write a book. " Most people will admit, too, that the wish to create something of value seems to be an intrinsic part of man's character. In this particular instance , these three plays represent a life- long fulfillment of a long-time desire o The writer's primary aim is to at tempt to create literature. A secondary aim is to have the plays sustain dramatic interest. A third aim is to fulfill a requirement for a master's degree at the State College …

Informational Materials In The Homes And Achievement In School Of Elementary Students At Iowa Falls, Iowa, Kenneth L. Christensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this rapidly changing world children are engaged with problems of science, social studies, literature, and world events. Their interests have been widened by travel, radio, television, newspapers, and magazines. Their curiosities have been aroused by new experiences and they search for related facts. The textbook formerly occupied a central position in learning; but in the complex society of the present, neither a single textbook nor multiple texts are adequate to enable the school to fulfill its responsibility for the education of children. Not only does a modern educational program demand more informational materials than did the narrow "essentials" program …

Student Counseling Program In Twenty Iowa Colleges, Lyle K. Henry, Donald R. Ortner Jan 1961

Student Counseling Program In Twenty Iowa Colleges, Lyle K. Henry, Donald R. Ortner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A survey was made of certain student personnel practices in twenty Iowa colleges by submitting a questionnaire and obtaining follow-up data one year later. While most colleges provide student counseling service, specific measures and procedures vary widely. There is no uniformity in regard to the testing program or the means for assisting students with "How to Study" problems. Generally speaking, any professional counseling effort is supplemented by adviser service rendered by regular faculty members.

The Principal’S Role In The Library Services In Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 200 To 300 Students, Arthur E. Borwick

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For many years colleges and universities have provided reasonably adequate instruction tor school administrators in moat of the areas of their professional education. Required courses in administration, curriculum, and supervision of the secondary school give attention to nearly all phases of the school program. However, it is questionable whether some phases of secondary education have been properly covered, and one of these is the library. Since all areas of responsibility are of concern to school administrators, it is fundamental that the role of the school library be adequately understood and supported by administrators if the library is to make its …

The Place Of English As A Foreign Language In The Ethiopian School System, Haile J. Abedjie Jan 1961

The Place Of English As A Foreign Language In The Ethiopian School System, Haile J. Abedjie

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Until the Italian occupation of 1936-1941 the name Ethiopia, which dates back to Biblical times, had been shrouded with myth and mystery. To some it was a reminder of the legend of the Queen of Sheba and to others it evoked the myth of Prester John. 1 Although the Italo-Ethiopian war of 1935-1936 did much to help foreigners place Ethiopia on the map of the world, even now only a very few foreigners can converse intelligently on Ethiopian history, culture, or politics.
