Barriers To Breastfeeding Among Rural Women In The United States, Kimberly Aschbrenner, Disa Lubker Cornish Mar 2017

Barriers To Breastfeeding Among Rural Women In The United States, Kimberly Aschbrenner, Disa Lubker Cornish

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Breastfeeding is well-established as a beneficial practice for both infants and mothers; substantial evidence from a wide variety of international settings supports the positive impacts of breastfeeding. However, a significant proportion of U.S. infants are not fed according to this standard. While poor breastfeeding rates can be found in all parts of the United States, the problem is particularly prevalent among mothers living in rural environments where health outcomes are consistently worse than national averages. Significant differences have been found between urban and rural women in many breastfeeding behavioral outcomes, including consistently lower rates reported among rural populations. The problem …

The Role Of Working Memory Among Non-Traditional Foreign Language Students, Gabriela Olivares-Cuhat, Michelle H. Ploof Mar 2017

The Role Of Working Memory Among Non-Traditional Foreign Language Students, Gabriela Olivares-Cuhat, Michelle H. Ploof

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Over the last 40 years, a growing number of nontraditional students have joined the ranks of higher education. However, due to a number of internal and external factors, these students face multiple social, economic, and academic challenges that may limit their success in postsecondary education. The focus of this article is to examine the implications of these challenges on the learning of a foreign language (FL), and more specifically on the role played by working memory (WM) with nontraditional FL learners. To this end, research studies in the fields of psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology and neuroscience are reviewed and their findings …

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Cheating, Anita M. Gordon, Helen C. Harton, Emma Welch Feb 2017

Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Cheating, Anita M. Gordon, Helen C. Harton, Emma Welch

Faculty Work

Students and faculty at a mid-sized masters comprehensive university completed a survey regarding their perceptions of student cheating and other academic misbehavior. A total of 656 student surveys (22%) and 303 faculty surveys (35%) were analyzed to determine the perceived prevalence of cheating across campus, which behaviors are considered cheating, and how wrong they are perceived to be. Results demonstrated less consensus among faculty than expected on which misbehaviors violate the academic ethics policy as well as considerable variation in the perceived frequency that the policy violations occur, for both students and faculty. Increased education about plagiarism and cheating is …

Discursive Struggles In Communication With Extended Stepfamily Members, Rebecca Diverniero Jan 2017

Discursive Struggles In Communication With Extended Stepfamily Members, Rebecca Diverniero

Iowa Journal of Communication

Despite the explosion of stepfamily communication research over the past 40 years, we still know little about how members of new stepfamilies manage their evolving relationships with extended kin. In particular, stepchildren face the challenge of getting to know new extended stepfamily members, yet society provides no social prescriptions for how to navigate interactions with people who stepchildren suddenly have familial ties to, yet share little to no history with. To investigate this relationship, I interviewed forty young adult stepchildren and conducted an interpretive analysis of the interviews, using Relational Dialectics Theory to frame the data. Two discursive struggles, stranger-family …

Disparities In Infant Mortality: Are Sociocultural Risk Factors Shaped By Institutionalized Racism?, Madison Grimm Jan 2017

Disparities In Infant Mortality: Are Sociocultural Risk Factors Shaped By Institutionalized Racism?, Madison Grimm

Honors Program Theses

The infant mortality rate (IMR) is an incredibly important indicator of the overall health of a nation. Because the IMR is so closely related with factors such as quality and accessibility of healthcare and socioeconomic conditions, it is helpful in evaluating a nation’s success. The United States (US) has one of the highest infant mortality rates among countries with a similar degree of economic development (those belonging to the OECD). In 2013, the IMR was 5.96 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC (Mathews, MacDorman, & Thoma, 2015). Furthermore, this rate …

The Filtered Self: What Instagram Postings Reveal About An Individual's Sense Of Identity, Stephanie Steiner Jan 2017

The Filtered Self: What Instagram Postings Reveal About An Individual's Sense Of Identity, Stephanie Steiner

Iowa Journal of Communication

In this paper, I explore how an Instagram posting reveals an individual's identity by studying the relationship between the intentions of an Instagram post and the attributions of intentions other users provide. Using Attribution Theory, I analyze the attributions provided by 16 participants in an online survey and compare them to my original intentions. I present results from a thematic analysis by categorizing themes that emerged from the online survey. Based on my data, I evaluate how social media, particularly Instagram, has changed society's perceptions of identity formation. This study provides evidence that Instagram users are moving toward presenting filtered …

Keeping The Peace: Daughters In-Law's Relational Maintenance Behaviors With Their Mothers In-Law, Mary E. Donato, Scott A. Myers Jan 2017

Keeping The Peace: Daughters In-Law's Relational Maintenance Behaviors With Their Mothers In-Law, Mary E. Donato, Scott A. Myers

Iowa Journal of Communication

The purpose of this study was to identify the specific behaviors daughters-in-law (DILs) use to maintain relationships with their mothers-in-law (MILs). Participants were 85 DILs who identified the behaviors they use to maintain their relationships with their MILs. Together, they identified 416 behaviors that were then coded into 14 categories of relational maintenance behaviors: mediated communication, family involvement, showing respect, keeping the peace, thoughtfulness, avoiding contact, expressing gratitude, visits, instrumental help, sharing meals, joint activities, frequent communication, common interests, and husband as buffer. From this, we concluded there are three general categories of behaviors in which DILs use: DILs engage …

Elementary School Students' Identity Negotiations In Their Literacy Classrooms, Kimberly Ilosvay, Jeff Kerssen-Griep Jan 2017

Elementary School Students' Identity Negotiations In Their Literacy Classrooms, Kimberly Ilosvay, Jeff Kerssen-Griep

Iowa Journal of Communication

Existing research reveals too little about how elementary-level students make sense of their teachers' and others' interpersonal communication with them, particularly regarding how it impacts students' identity development and engagement in teaching-learning relationships and instruction. Addressing this timely exigency, this study applied a cross-disciplinary conceptual framework to examine identity aspects of elementary school students' interpersonal and relational communication experiences in and around their literacy learning classrooms. Guided by Hecht et al.'s (2005) communication theory of identity (CTI) and examining themes that emerged among 103 face-to-face interviews with second-through fifth-graders, this paper reports key findings related to four interpenetrating identity layers, …

Organizational Culture: An Analysis Of The Aggregate Impact On Financial Performance, Arijan Alagic Jan 2017

Organizational Culture: An Analysis Of The Aggregate Impact On Financial Performance, Arijan Alagic

Honors Program Theses

Strong organizational culture, although an intangible asset, can produce tangible gains for businesses in the form of stock returns. This study uses Fortune magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work for in America to identify companies with strong organizational culture. Of those 100, I used the stock performance of 20 public companies who have (1) been on the list for at least 10 years and (2) have been publicly traded for at least 10 years. Each of the companies is assigned a matching industry sector and the returns are compared to the overall stock market, represented by the S&P 500. From …

Accommodating Invisible Illnesses And Disabilities In The Workplace, Elizabeth Simmons Jan 2017

Accommodating Invisible Illnesses And Disabilities In The Workplace, Elizabeth Simmons

Honors Program Theses

As our society evolves and becomes more accepting of people impacted by disabilities, we need to work to understand how to best accommodate those disabilities in the workplace. If employees and supervisors were trained on the importance of accommodating disabilities and the potential legal risk associated with a lack of accommodation, I believe they would be more open to implementing those accommodations. This research has taught me the value of how you can never understand what every person is going through. Each individual may have different needs, but it is the duty of HR professionals to attempt to create a …

Effects Of Studying Abroad On College Students, Kaliana Villa Jan 2017

Effects Of Studying Abroad On College Students, Kaliana Villa

Honors Program Theses

This thesis focused on the ways short-term study abroad capstones may change students’ political stances, as well as the way it may impact their worldview. To do this, data was collected via an online survey before and after each student’s capstone with permission from the University of Northern Iowa’s Study Abroad Center. The specific variables which were measured are political standpoint (how liberal or conservative a student is), and their worldview (how the students see the world around them on a global scale). Although there has been some research done on the ways studying abroad helps students develop cross-cultural skills, …

Is High Folic Acid Intake A Risk Factor For Autism?—A Review, Darrell Wiens, M. Catherine Desoto Jan 2017

Is High Folic Acid Intake A Risk Factor For Autism?—A Review, Darrell Wiens, M. Catherine Desoto

Faculty Work

Folate is required for metabolic processes and neural development. Insuring its adequate levels for pregnant women through supplementation of grain-based foods with synthetic folic acid (FA) in order to prevent neural tube defects has been an ongoing public health initiative. However, because women are advised to take multivitamins containing FA before and throughout pregnancy, the supplementation together with natural dietary folates has led to a demographic with high and rising serum levels of unmetabolized FA. This raises concerns about the detrimental effects of high serum synthetic FA, including a rise in risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Some recent studies …

"Slavery Wasn't That Bad": An Examination Of The Effects Of Reduced Social Studies Class Time And Student Misconceptions, Matthew Karl Mengler Jan 2017

"Slavery Wasn't That Bad": An Examination Of The Effects Of Reduced Social Studies Class Time And Student Misconceptions, Matthew Karl Mengler

Honors Program Theses

There are four core subjects taught in American public schools today: math, English language arts, science, and social studies. For years, the social studies have been receiving less instructional time when compared to “more important” subjects such as reading, language arts, and math. This has especially been the case since the legislation of No Child Left Behind which placed English language arts and math as the two main pillars of a child’s education. The goal of this study was to figure out how teachers are adapting to this lack of social studies instruction time and to see if there have …

Balancing Research, Teaching, Clinical Work, And Family: Nine Suggestions For Young Professionals, Elizabeth K. Lefler Jan 2017

Balancing Research, Teaching, Clinical Work, And Family: Nine Suggestions For Young Professionals, Elizabeth K. Lefler

Faculty Work

Balancing multiple professional roles and a family can be demanding. The current paper is a non-evidence based list of informal, anecdotal suggestions for professionals who strive to balance multiple work roles with the demands of raising young children. It is important to note I make no claims that this is an evidence-based method for achieving optimal work-family balance. Rather, I was invited to this conference to discuss my own experiences balancing work and family; this paper reflects that non-scientific aim, and includes a list of nine suggestions that I hope will be helpful to some. I am a licensed clinical …

The Power Of Team In Iep Meetings, Caroline Elser Jan 2017

The Power Of Team In Iep Meetings, Caroline Elser

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine school-family collaboration for students with disabilities by exploring how communication during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings supports or limits parental participation. Research has indicated strong school-family partnerships lead to better educational outcomes for students. The IEP meeting is a critical component of the educational process for a child with a disability. The interactions between parents and school personnel during IEP meetings are complex events that can leave parents feeling frustrated or uninvolved in their child’s education. This qualitative study examined one IEP team meeting through in-depth interviews, participant observation of an IEP …
