Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder: Performance On Language And Cognitive Testing, Hallee Mingus
Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI
Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) Is a rare and widely unknown disease, often resulting in misdiagnosis and nonproductive therapy. It is a relapsing inflammatory demyelinating disease that affects the central nervous system and attacks the brain, resulting in severe physical &/or visual disability (Pfeuffer et al., 2017). What little knowledge we have about NMOSD, we hold an even smaller amount about its effects on speech and communication; which is what this case history study aims to answer. Due to the lack of information regarding NMOSD’s effects on an individual’s speech and communication abilities, assessments were performed in order to start …

Identification Of Nitrates Within Coldwater Cave, Blake Schany, Joshua Sebree
Identification Of Nitrates Within Coldwater Cave, Blake Schany, Joshua Sebree
Fall 2022 - Chemical Analysis Class Projects
Agricultural runoff has the potential to greatly damage the ecosystem of Coldwater Cave. Agricultural runoff includes elements found in herbicides and fertilizers used on crops as well as increased amounts of nitrogen in the water due to runoff from cattle sites. Identification of the presence of water soluble pollutants from cattle feedlot runoff and toxic components found in common herbicides used in maintaining cropland within the cave is needed to address the potential damage that the contaminants can do to the ecosystem of the cave. Identifying contaminants present within the cave systems using UV Vis will allow for more targeted …

An Investigation Of Fluorescent Synthetic Rocks At The Shrine Of The Grotto Of The Redemption, Austin Heidbreder, Joshua Sebree
Fall 2022 - Chemical Analysis Class Projects
The Grotto of the Shrine of Redemption is a religious site in West Bend, Iowa. The large structure is made of a variety of minerals and rocks, some synthetic, that can be studied. Many of these synthetic rocks are a product of smelting crayons together. It was found that several of these synthetic rocks were fluorescent. Those found in the Grotto of the Shrine of Redemption were studied with fluorescence spectroscopy and cross-referenced with knowledge of pastel dyes in use in the 1930s. It was found that some of the fluorescing rocks were likely made using crayons containing various red …

Water Quality Mapping Throughout Coldwater Cave, Jade Nuehring, Joshua Sebree, Raquel Wilhelm, Blake Schany
Fall 2022 - Chemical Analysis Class Projects
Coldwater Cave, located in Decorah, Iowa is surveyed to contain 17.2 miles of passageways. This study is a mapping of how dissolved oxygen levels and water conductivity compare throughout water samples taken at 9 different locations within the cave. In this study we want to know how what is on the surface is impacting the cave water quality as Coldwater Cave sits between two above ground rivers and is covered with land used for agricultural purposes. Water quality studies done on other major rivers have shown that typical conductivity levels are within the 200-1000 micro-Siemen/cm range, and it is important …

Raman Analysis Of Fluorescent Minerals And Rocks At The Shrine Of The Grotto Of The Redemption, Samrin Shahnaz, Joshua Sebree
Fall 2022 - Chemical Analysis Class Projects
The Shrine of the Grotto of the Redemption is a religious tourist attraction in West Bend, IA, which also happens to be the world’s largest grotto. A Catholic priest, Fr. Dobberstein , constructed the grotto using precious stones from all over the US about a hundred years ago, and the caretakers have questions about the chemical compositions of the rocks and minerals, both natural and synthetic. Raman Spectroscopy is a non destructive method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of chemical compounds. In this project, Raman analysis was performed on various fluorescent rocks found at the grotto. This included both natural …

New Equations For Hydrostatic Weighing Without Head Submersion, Jeff C. Tesch, Panayiotis Papadopoulos, Forrest Dolgener, Grant M. Tinsley
Faculty Publications
New equations were derived to predict the density of the body (DB) by hydrostatic weighing with the head above water (HWHAW). Hydrostatic weighing with the head below water (HWHBW) was the criterion for DB measurement in 90 subjects (44 M, 46 F). Head volume by immersion (HVIMM) was determined by subtracting the mass in water with the head below water (MWHBW) from the mass in water with the head above water (MWHAW), with subjects at residual lung volume. Equations were derived for head volume prediction (HVPRED) from head measurements and used to correct DB by HWHAW. Equations were also derived …

Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy Analysis Of Native American Pottery For Maple Syrup Residue [Poster], Alexis Wirtz, Joshua Sebree Ph.D., Donald Gaff Ph.D.
Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy Analysis Of Native American Pottery For Maple Syrup Residue [Poster], Alexis Wirtz, Joshua Sebree Ph.D., Donald Gaff Ph.D.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
The research conducted regards whether or not Native Americans understood how to create maple syrup before the influence of Europeans. Through the usage of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS), the identity of different maple syrup organic residues within pottery can be determined.1 These organic residues tell us more about Native American history and culture. An analysis of organic residues was performed on the following types of pottery: proof of concept and weathered (an analog of the proof of concept). Organic residues were able to be identified within the proof of concept but not in the weathered pottery. This research also …
Using Atomic Force Microscopy To Study Dna And Rad51 Protein Interaction, Samrin Shahnaz, Justin Peters Ph.D.
Using Atomic Force Microscopy To Study Dna And Rad51 Protein Interaction, Samrin Shahnaz, Justin Peters Ph.D.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
Recombinase proteins, such as RAD51, play a central role in repairing double-strand breaks of DNA through the process of homologous recombination. In this project, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was used to generate scans of RAD51 proteins bound to double-stranded DNA. Due to the cooperativity of RAD51 binding, we observed a nucleation effect where RAD51 proteins generally tended to bind to DNA that already had other RAD51 proteins bound.
Extracting Lithium Using The Steric Bulk Of An Aminimide Functional Group, Jacob Parker, Martin Chin Ph.D.
Extracting Lithium Using The Steric Bulk Of An Aminimide Functional Group, Jacob Parker, Martin Chin Ph.D.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
An aminimide is a zwitterionic group containing a cationic nitrogen bonded to an anionic nitrogen. The goal of this project was to use the steric bulk and electronic properties of the aminimide to block other species in a brine solution such as potassium, and selectively pick up lithium. To test this, polymethacrylate beads which contain carboxyl groups were modified to the desired aminimide. Three different aminimide groups were tested, a trimethylaminimide, aminopyridiniumaminimide, and a triethylaminimide. The modified beads would be introduced to a solution containing lithium and the lithium concentration was measured before and after exposure to the beads using …

Attitudes Toward The Chemistry Laboratory Learning Environment Using Different Pedagogies And Assessment Protocols, Lydia Richardson, Dawn Del Carlo Ph.D.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) and Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) are evidence-based laboratory approaches that emphasize the process of scientific argumentation (Burke et al., 2006; Rudd et al., 2001; Walker et al., 2011). The University of Northern Iowa utilized the SWH approach for over 10 years until research indicated that the cognitive load associated with the pre-lab, specifically, hindered students’ ability to participate in authentic scientific inquiry for the rest of the laboratory experiment (Bonde & Del Carlo, 2018). In response to this, a hybrid model of instruction integrating elements of both the SWH and ADI laboratory approaches was created …

- The leading cause of lung-cancer for individuals who do not smoke is exposure to abnormally high radon concentrations. If radon concentrations within a person’s basement is above 4 pCi/L, the EPA recommends further testing and possible decontamination of the area to mitigate one’s exposure to radon.
- Radon is a radioactive gas that originates from the decay series of Uranium-238. The decay series begins with Uranium-238 and finishes with an end product of Lead-206. However, during this decay process before Lead-206 is culminated, intermediates such as Uranium-234, Thorium-230, Radium-226, and Radon-222 are also produced
The Total Solar Eclipse Of 1869 In Iowa: What Remains Today, Jacob P. Baskin
The Total Solar Eclipse Of 1869 In Iowa: What Remains Today, Jacob P. Baskin
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
On August 7th, 1869, a total solar eclipse was visible in the United States. It carved a path through the heartland, nearly bisecting the state of Iowa as it ran from the northwest corner of the state, through Des Moines, and down through the southeast. As the scientists of the day flocked from universities and observatories on the east coast to the Midwest for a chance to make observations and measurements, many of the teams chose to set up in Iowa. Along the path of the eclipse, the parties built temporary observatories to house their telescopes, or simply picked buildings …
