On The Piezoelectric Properties Of Tourmaline, Morris Underwood Jan 1933

On The Piezoelectric Properties Of Tourmaline, Morris Underwood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oscillating piezoelectric plates of different frequencies have been made from California and South African tourmaline. These plates have a frequency response of approximately 3770 kc per millimeter of thickness. The temperature coefficient for both to be negative and is about 25.5 parts per million per degree centigrade for the African specimen and 28.1 parts per million per degree centigrade for the California crystal. Comparison of the tourmaline plates with a Y-cut quartz plate of the same size and frequency shows the tourmaline oscillators decidedly inferior on the basis of power output.

Determination Of Linear Coefficients Of Thermal Expansion Of Thin Samples By Optical Lever, John E. Gorham, George C. Higgins Jan 1933

Determination Of Linear Coefficients Of Thermal Expansion Of Thin Samples By Optical Lever, John E. Gorham, George C. Higgins

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to measure coefficients of thermal expansion of small samples varying from one to twenty millimeters in thickness an optical lever has been designed to allow detection of a change in thickness of the sample of plus or minus twenty Angstrom units. The dilatation is read in terms of the change of interference bands produced between two nearly parallel glass plates. A formula was developed which does away with continuous observation during the expansion. Through the use of this formula the accuracy of the result is comparable with that obtained by continuous observation. The samples do not have to …

The Measurement Of Psychophysical Functions Characteristic Of Extreme Degrees Of Artistic Capacity, Carolyn E. Tiebout Jan 1933

The Measurement Of Psychophysical Functions Characteristic Of Extreme Degrees Of Artistic Capacity, Carolyn E. Tiebout

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Through extended laboratory measurements an attempt has been made to determine the psycho-physical traits characteristic of artistic as opposed to non-artistic children. Results indicate that while differences do not exist in motility, motor accuracy, and color sensitivity, there are significant differences in imagination, memory for visual stimuli, completeness of observation, and originality of line drawing.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Committee on College Examinations for the American Association of Physics Teachers, working in conjunction with the Cooperative Test Service, which is sponsored by the American Council of Education, have prepared two forms of an objective examination over mechanics, sound and wave motion. This examination was given to the students in fifteen cooperating colleges at the end of the first semester; involving more than 1000 students. The results of this cooperative examination will be discussed. A second cooperative examination is now being prepared by the Committee for use at the end of the second semester.

Piezoelectric Measurements Of Crystals With A High Sensitivity Lever, George Fink Jan 1933

Piezoelectric Measurements Of Crystals With A High Sensitivity Lever, George Fink

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For the measurement of piezoelectric deformations of quartz and tourmaline plates an amplifying lever system was designed and built. A lever ratio of 1864 to 1 combined with an optical interference method of measuring the motion of the long end of the lever makes it possible to detect a displacement of the short end of only 0.15 Angström unit. The changes in thickness of quartz plates about two mm thick were measured with potential differences up to 500 volts between the electrodes on the faces of the plates. The piezoelectric constant of quartz found by this method using the converse …

A New Electrical Method Of Determining Specific Heats, Earl C. Mccracken Jan 1933

A New Electrical Method Of Determining Specific Heats, Earl C. Mccracken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

89. A new electrical method

In this report is described a method of procuring the specific heats of materials by comparing the rate of heating of water by direct passage of current through it to the rate of heating when the water contains small particles of the material. By this method one may determine accurately the specific heat of a substance over various temperature ranges and while the temperature is rising. It is also especially applicable where the specific heat cannot be obtained accurately by the method of mixtures because of the nature of the material.

Are We Giving The Child A Chance Musically?, Melvin S. Hattwick Jan 1933

Are We Giving The Child A Chance Musically?, Melvin S. Hattwick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As one aspect of a larger problem on the genesis of pitch behavior from birth through the fifth year, 37 four and five-year old children in preschool were given 28 practices on a song over a period of 14 days. These practices were given as group practices during the regular music period. At the end of the practice period each child recorded the song on a dictaphone record, first in the key of the practice period (the investigator gave the starting pitch), and then in a key 3 semi-tones lower.

Some Biological Contributions To Recreation (Address Of The President), H. E. Jaques Jan 1933

Some Biological Contributions To Recreation (Address Of The President), H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

To my memory comes the scene of a little group of college students nearing the end of a long morning tramp through the tall dew wet grass of early spring. We were out on a bird trip and had gone several miles through the woods. The physical condition of the little company would not be expected to inspire enthusiasm. As we reached the city park and found still more warblers breakfast gathering in the trees, one of the young women cried out with an exultation never to be forgotten, "Oh! I know I shall enjoy this all my life."

The Role Of Liver In Growth, Reproduction And Lactation, H. Gregg Smith, Walter H. Seegers Jan 1933

The Role Of Liver In Growth, Reproduction And Lactation, H. Gregg Smith, Walter H. Seegers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Alcohol-extracted beef liver was fed to albino rats as the only source of protein in a ration adequate in the recognized factors necessary for normal nutrition, the vitamins being supplied by yeast, cod liver oil and hydrogenated cottonseed oil (Crisco) ; the latter furnished the fat of the basal diet. The ration was found to be inadequate for optimum growth, reproduction and lactation. Supplementing the basal diet with 0.5 g. of raw liver or replacing the extracted-liver of the basal diet with whole dried liver greatly increased the growth rate and improved lactation.

The Availabilty Of Indole Derivatives For Supplementing Diets Derivatives In Tryptophane, Lyle C. Bauguess, Clarence P. Berg Jan 1933

The Availabilty Of Indole Derivatives For Supplementing Diets Derivatives In Tryptophane, Lyle C. Bauguess, Clarence P. Berg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Interest in the possibility of replacing essential amino acids in the diet with synthetic products more or less closely related in chemical structure has led us to synthesize β -3-indoleacrylic acid and α-oximino-β-3-indolepropionic acid and feed them to rats in conjunction with a diet deficient in tryptophane. Reports in the literature on the availability of β-4-imidazoleacrylic acid in supplementing diets deficient in histidine are conflicting. No α-oximino acid has been studied in this connection. The oxime of pyruvic acid, however, has been shown to undergo reduction, in the presence of vigorously fermenting yeast, to alanine.

Some High Lights On Science Club Work

Science Bulletin

"The success of the club is of course more dependent upon the director than upon any other one factor. The director should take no active part during the meeting, except when it is necessary to carry the boys over what is to them an insurmountable difficulty-his frame of mind should be that of a man behind the scenes, who having set the stage stands by watching the performance, ever-ready to step into a situation and set things right. The ability to do this properly comes with practice. It does not demand exceptional ability or personality - Next to efficient leadership, …

The Place Of The Green Leaf In The World, C. W. Lantz Apr 1932

The Place Of The Green Leaf In The World, C. W. Lantz

Science Bulletin

Why is a leaf? Ask the question of twenty-five of your friends and if five can give the correct answer I will be surprised. The green leaf is the food factory for the world. It is the plant organ that captures the energy of the sun and in the process of photosynthesis builds of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water and stores this energy in potential form. Later, through oxidation processes, this energy is released and does most of the work of the world. The green plant connects the inorganic world with the organic world and our energy is directly …

Colloids, R. W. Getchell Apr 1932

Colloids, R. W. Getchell

Science Bulletin

The increasing importance of the chemistry of colloids is giving them a wide recognition in the general chemistry texts of college grade. In a lesser degree they are included in the high school books but the information is often so condensed as to offer little of value. The writer believes that two or three class periods near the end of the year's course should be devoted to this subject and this article will attempt to present basic fact upon which may be built a discussion of colloids for high school pupils.
