Affordable Care Act Insurance Coverage Gains In The Midwest: Evidence From The Dependent Coverage Provision, Sarah Herz Apr 2021

Affordable Care Act Insurance Coverage Gains In The Midwest: Evidence From The Dependent Coverage Provision, Sarah Herz

Major Themes in Economics

This paper analyzes how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Dependent Coverage Provision affected insurance coverage in the Midwestern region. The Dependent Coverage Provision allows individuals ages 19 to 25 to remain as dependents on parental health insurance plans. This provision was implemented to decrease the number of young adults who were uninsured. Using data from the American Community Survey spanning the years 2008-2013 and estimating difference-in-differences models, I test the impact of the policy implementation on health insurance coverage among a sample of Midwestern young adults. Under my preferred specification, which includes two-way fixed effects and controls for observable characteristics, …

Privatizing Social Security: Economic And Social Concerns, Sarah Madsen Apr 2021

Privatizing Social Security: Economic And Social Concerns, Sarah Madsen

Major Themes in Economics

The U.S. Social Security program is in need of reform. One of the most popular solutions to the long-run financing problem is privatization. This paper examines key economic and social concerns about a shift from a public pay-as-you-go system to a privately-funded system. While a privatized system does reduce overall uncertainty and allows for greater returns, its increased risk and high transition costs make it an unreliable strategy.

Designing Promise Programs: Decisions And Effects, Shay Slifka Apr 2021

Designing Promise Programs: Decisions And Effects, Shay Slifka

Major Themes in Economics

Having gained popularity over the past two decades, promise programs are a relatively new policy tool aimed at increasing the number of people who earn two-year and four-year postsecondary educational degrees by providing partial or full financial aid. In contrast to other forms of financial aid for postsecondary education, promise programs guarantee funding to students of a specified geographic area, which is sometimes accompanied by merit or need-based requirements. Promise programs differ in design, vary in result, and potentially cause substitution and migration effects. By analyzing several mature promise programs, I identify three fundamental design decisions that policymakers must consider …

An Economic Analysis Of The Effects Of Streaming On The Music Industry In Response To Criticism From Taylor Swift, Hugh Zehr Apr 2021

An Economic Analysis Of The Effects Of Streaming On The Music Industry In Response To Criticism From Taylor Swift, Hugh Zehr

Major Themes in Economics

Since its introduction in the early 2010s, music streaming has transformed the industry. Streaming has both fans and critics. One of the most notable critics is superstar Taylor Swift, who has questioned streaming’s ability to adequately compensate those involved in music creation. My analysis acknowledges her critique and looks specifically into how streaming services have affected all participants in the industry. While streaming initially decreased profits in the music industry as a whole, the industry has adjusted and has seen returns from this new model of music consumption. Streaming services increase benefits to all players in the music industry by …

Assessing Outcome Predictability In Prairie Strip Establishment, Justin Meissen, Alec Glidden Mar 2021

Assessing Outcome Predictability In Prairie Strip Establishment, Justin Meissen, Alec Glidden

Tallgrass Prairie Publications and Reports

In order to secure long-term practice buy-in and increase new adoption of highly beneficial conservation initiatives like the USDA’s Prairie Strips practice, it is important to ensure farmers can successfully employ native plant revegetation methods on their first try. Many farmers and landowners are new to establishing native vegetation, and must rely on second-hand forms of information such as practice implementation guidelines. Guidelines that are currently available are often not based on applicable scientific research. A strong scientific understanding of the methods that can achieve success in a cost-effective way are required to inform useful prairie reconstruction guidelines. In particular, …

Adam’S Task: Naming And Sub-Creation In Good Omens, Janet Brennan Croft Feb 2021

Adam’S Task: Naming And Sub-Creation In Good Omens, Janet Brennan Croft

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Names are, in one sense, the outward indication of a power negotiation. The namer, the one who bestows a new name or uses an already-given name, reveals, through the choice of name they give or use, their relationship to that which they name. The act may indicate a more or less equal relationship; it may represent an attempt to exert power over someone or something by imposing a name on it or by using a name that will influence those who hear it; or it may be an act of submission and ingratiation, using a name to flatter …

Poster Session: Predicted Net Flux Versus Pressure Profiles During A Probe Descent Into Uranus’S Atmosphere, Meredith Wieber, Shahid Aslam, Maarten Roos, Patrick Irwin, Geronimo Villanueva Feb 2021

Poster Session: Predicted Net Flux Versus Pressure Profiles During A Probe Descent Into Uranus’S Atmosphere, Meredith Wieber, Shahid Aslam, Maarten Roos, Patrick Irwin, Geronimo Villanueva

Society of Physics Students Regional Meeting

The responsivity of the proposed Net Flux Radiometer (NFR) for the Ice Giants was examined, using a specialty browser tool. This tool takes simulated spectra of Uranus, along with specific parameters of the NFR, and applies Net Flux calculations in order to produce a net flux profile, a simulated view of what the NFR probe would observe as it plunged into Uranus’s atmosphere. The efforts of this project led to a redesign of the NFR to include an increase in the FOV of the radiation-collection windows from 5° to 10°, as well as the selection of spectral bandwidths for observation …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Brenda M. Boleyn Jan 2021

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Brenda M. Boleyn

Graduate Research Papers

Throughout my life I have tried to engage myself in activities that were opportunities for me to "make a difference." Whether it be involvement in community clean-up projects or parks and recreation programs for children, my intentions were always to use my time to do good for a cause or another person. I carried this belief with me into college while I was in search of what I wanted to become "when I grew up." I looked in several directions on the basis of some fundamental goals I had for myself. First, I knew I wanted to be in a …

Torch Rhetoric: Characterizations Of Flawed Mentorship, Paul Lucas, Abbey Mccann Jan 2021

Torch Rhetoric: Characterizations Of Flawed Mentorship, Paul Lucas, Abbey Mccann

Iowa Journal of Communication

This work seeks to explore the importance of mentorship, even if its guidance and direction are characterized by flaws. By looking at entertainment media and the way in which mentors are sought for the purpose of passing the torch to a new generation of characters with new storylines, the work will explain how realistic portrayals of those within leadership positions are important. Specifically, the work will draw from plot points of mentors and mentees looking for something in their own lives. The mentors are able to give useful guidance, ultimately working in the mentees' best interests; the goal is to …

Communicating Positive Hpv Test Results: A Directed Content Analysis Of Women's Preferences Using Self-Determination Theory, Susanna Foxworthy Scott, Katharine J. Head, Nicole L. Johnson, Kaitlyn Kruer, Gregory D. Zimet Jan 2021

Communicating Positive Hpv Test Results: A Directed Content Analysis Of Women's Preferences Using Self-Determination Theory, Susanna Foxworthy Scott, Katharine J. Head, Nicole L. Johnson, Kaitlyn Kruer, Gregory D. Zimet

Iowa Journal of Communication

Changes in cervical cancer screening guidelines and persistent disparities indicate a need to identify communication preferences for receiving a positive HPV test result to ensure appropriate follow-up care. We conducted a directed content analysis guided by the tenets of self-determination theory of 575 written responses derived from a national sample of women > 18 in the United States. Biologically female women responded to a prompt about communication preferences for a positive HPV test result. Pearson chi-square analyses were conducted to discover differences in communication preferences. Individuals with health insurance (p = 0.044), those with >$29,999 in annual household income (p = …

Curriculum Planning: A Snapshot Of Iowa, Undergraduate Communication Studies Curriculum In 4-Year Colleges And Universities, Audrey L. Deterding, James L. Kauffman

Iowa Journal of Communication

Curriculum planning is an ongoing process that requires an exploration of current offerings to determine if programs meet the needs of stakeholders and remain current with the discipline. The last national study to examine communication studies curriculum was more than a decade ago. This study provides a current snapshot of course offerings at all 4-year colleges and universities in Iowa that offer majors in communication studies. It compares and contrasts the Iowa curriculum to earlier national curricular studies in communication. Results suggest that while Iowa schools generally align with national studies, public and private schools differ in their offerings and …

Rumormonger? Whistleblower? Martyr?: How The U.S. And Chinese Media Framed The Narrative Of Covid-19 Doctor Li Wenliang, Zhenzhu Zhang, Steven J. Venette

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study explores news stories regarding Dr. Li Wenliang, one of the first people who tried to raise the alarm about the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, and eventually died from the disease. The way Dr. Li Wenliang was depicted in the media changed over time. Understanding how that depiction changed is important because it helps demonstrate how narratives function to frame crises. The current study uses framing and narrative theories to support thematic analysis. Observing how a narrative changes allows for a more nuanced perspective of how crises are communicated and understood by the community. Three major themes …

Communication Theory Of Identity, Identity Gap Theory, And Motherscholaring During Covid-19, Sarah Symonds Leblanc, Elizabeth L. Spradley, Heather K. Olson Beal, Lauren E. Burrow, Chrissy Cross Jan 2021

Communication Theory Of Identity, Identity Gap Theory, And Motherscholaring During Covid-19, Sarah Symonds Leblanc, Elizabeth L. Spradley, Heather K. Olson Beal, Lauren E. Burrow, Chrissy Cross

Iowa Journal of Communication

This article uses an interactive interviewing approach to capture the lived experiences of five MotherScholars during the COVID-19 pandemic. Applying the Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) and identity gaps, we aim to understand how COVID-19 impacted our MotherScholar identities. While CTI and identity gap research has advanced a layered perspective of identity across different contexts, the research is just beginning to explore gaps within and between layers to understand how individuals and groups make sense of those gaps. Our use of “collaborative autoethnography” enables us to extend CTI and identity gap research by teasing out identity gaps that we experienced …

Watching The Watchdogs: Online News Commenters' Critiques Of Journalistic Performance During Terrorist Attacks, Ioana A. Coman Jan 2021

Watching The Watchdogs: Online News Commenters' Critiques Of Journalistic Performance During Terrorist Attacks, Ioana A. Coman

Iowa Journal of Communication

This international comparative analysis explores what categories the public uses to evaluate the media performances of American and French journalists and media covering terrorist attacks. Specifically, the study looked at the Boston Marathon bombing (2013), and the Paris (Bataclan) terrorist attacks (2015), and the related online news stories comment sections of The New York Times and Le Figaro. The online comments of each news story were examined through a qualitative content analysis. The study shows that in a time of crisis commenters both appreciate and criticize journalistic performance and make direct demands to the journalists and editors. When applying journalistic …

Consideration Of The Ethical Implications Of Artificial Intelligence In The Audit Profession, Marcy Kim Uglum Jan 2021

Consideration Of The Ethical Implications Of Artificial Intelligence In The Audit Profession, Marcy Kim Uglum

Honors Program Theses

Given its burgeoning development and powerful use of data interpretation and analyses, AI is important to the future of the auditing profession. These new and emerging tools are needed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of tasks (Baldwin, Brown, & Trinkle, 2007). Firms that provide these auditing services are looking for ways to use AI to assess the risk of unstructured and semi-structured, repetitive, decisions. Although AI is currently playing a prominent role in various aspects of our modern society, the use of this technology is still in the earlier stages of development for the auditing profession. Therefore, this research …

Fraud And Covid-19: An Unintended Downside Of Government Aid During The Pandemic, Derek Labarge Jan 2021

Fraud And Covid-19: An Unintended Downside Of Government Aid During The Pandemic, Derek Labarge

Honors Program Theses

Last year, COVID-19 brought an unprecedented global crisis to the world. As experts continue to analyze the virus itself, it is also necessary to study the aftermath of the pandemic. This includes any unforeseen consequences from the actions taken by people and governments trying to navigate their way through the chaos. This project aims to focus on one of these consequences: fraud. Past disasters and crises have unfortunately shown that these times of need for people are often when third parties, businesses, or even victims themselves take advantage of the situation for personal gain, often at the expense of those …

Gilti Regulations: The Intended Effects Compared To The Actual Results, Carson Lee Ehrenberg Jan 2021

Gilti Regulations: The Intended Effects Compared To The Actual Results, Carson Lee Ehrenberg

Honors Program Theses

In this thesis, the proposed effects of GILTI have been analyzed and compared to the true effects of GILTI. Research has been done to see if GILTI is actually influencing firm’s choices on investment location, if companies are involving themselves in even more creative tax 2 planning, or if firms are simply absorbing the cost. This research will be important to show whether or not the current U.S. tax system is achieving its proposed goals. This research will also be useful for those that are looking to assess the success of Congress’ actions when it comes enacting new tax legislation. …

Homeownership By Race: Factors That Explain The Homeownership Gap Between Blacks And Whites, Sarah Madsen Jan 2021

Homeownership By Race: Factors That Explain The Homeownership Gap Between Blacks And Whites, Sarah Madsen

Honors Program Theses

A key source of wealth and a symbol of hard work, homeownership is at the heart of the American Dream. The disparity of homeownership between whites and blacks has existed for decades and has only increased. The homeownership rate gap is wider now than before the 1968 Fair Housing Act, with about a 30-percentage point gap. This paper investigates the reasons for the homeownership rate gap by discussing policies history, discriminatory practices, and other minority disadvantages.
