Response Of The Multiflora Rose To Growth Conditions In Southern Iowa, J. M. Aikman Jan 1949

Response Of The Multiflora Rose To Growth Conditions In Southern Iowa, J. M. Aikman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The idea of utilizing an exotic rose, popularly known as the multiflora rose, to make living fences has caught the fancy of farmers, sportsmen and conservationists in general, specialists as well as laymen. Possibly because this Asiatic rose furnishes the entire fence rather than only the posts, is apparently easy to establish and seems to be the ideal escape and nesting cover for wildlife as well as a panacea for many soil erosion ills, it is being planted even more generally than was the black locust in the past decade without benefit of research to provide answers to questions of …

The Mccormick Effect In Cultures Of Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Batatatis From Soybeans, Joseph C. Gilman, Lois H. Tiffany Jan 1949

The Mccormick Effect In Cultures Of Diaporthe Phaseolorum Var. Batatatis From Soybeans, Joseph C. Gilman, Lois H. Tiffany

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the problems of the investigator of parasitic fungi is that of obtaining ascospore stages of the organism in cultures derived from diseased plant parts. Such cultures often produce mycelium or mycelium and conidia without the corresponding ascospore stage. With the advent of our knowledge of heterothallism such sexual stages have often been grown artificially by the mating of self-sterile strains. A few cases of heterothallism, in which the sexes are segregated on separate thalli, are also known. Finally, with homothallic fungi that fruit with difficulty in ordinary culture some advance on the problem has been made by students …

Homogeneity Of Behavior Indicated From The Spearman-Brown Prophecy Formula, Charles O. Neidt Jan 1949

Homogeneity Of Behavior Indicated From The Spearman-Brown Prophecy Formula, Charles O. Neidt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reliability of a test is usually defined as the consistency with which a test measures whatever it measures, the consistency being indicated by the correlation between two administrations of the same test or between equivalent forms. Whenever it has not been feasible to administer the test twice, or whenever full-length equivalent forms have not been available, the procedure usually followed has been that of making two synthetic tests by scoring the odd- and even-numbered items separately, or by scoring two randomly-drawn lists of items. Dividing the test in this manner results in obtaining a correlation between two forms which …

Direct Seeding Of Black Locust For Production Of Posts In Southern Iowa, J. M. Aikman, G. R. Cooper Jan 1949

Direct Seeding Of Black Locust For Production Of Posts In Southern Iowa, J. M. Aikman, G. R. Cooper

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Probably no woody plant has been introduced as widely, in as great numbers, in as short a period of time as was the black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia L. in the middle 1930's. The desirable qualities of this species have been emphasized by a few enthusiastic advocates since the latter part of the seventeenth century. It was because of these early favorable reports, based chiefly on limited observations rather than on scientific investigations, that the black locust came to be regarded as a tree which would survive under the most unfavorable conditions and led to its selection in 1934 as a …

Some Factors In The Academic Superiority Of Veteran Students, William A. Owens, William A. Owens Jr. Jan 1949

Some Factors In The Academic Superiority Of Veteran Students, William A. Owens, William A. Owens Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Veterans of World War II in considerable numbers have now been back on college campuses for several years. Concern over their proper academic and vocational disposition has prompted a substantial number of studies of their differential characteristics as compared with non-veterans. It has, for example, been rather well established through such investigations as those of Clark (1), Gowan (2), Taylor (5), et al, that veterans tend to be superior to non-veterans in academic achievement at the college level. Gowan has, in addition, pointed out that this state of affairs still obtains if scholastic aptitude be held constant. Owens (4), in …

Keeping Employees Informed, Joann Pitcher, Max E. Thompson Jan 1949

Keeping Employees Informed, Joann Pitcher, Max E. Thompson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The widening interest in the topic of communicating with employees is evidenced by the increasing frequency with which articles relevant to this problem may be found in industrial, personnel, and business journals during the last three or four years. This increased incidence of articles indicates that men in management positions are beginning to recognize more and more the importance of keeping their employees informed about the company for which they are working in order to improve morale and job satisfaction, to further community and public relations, and to bring about a greater degree of cooperative efficiency throughout the organization.

Spontaneous Doubling Of The Chromosome Complement In Monoploid Sporophytes Of Maize, Sherret S. Chase Jan 1949

Spontaneous Doubling Of The Chromosome Complement In Monoploid Sporophytes Of Maize, Sherret S. Chase

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Monoploid plants of maize are of interest to the plant breeder as a possible source of homozygous lines; that is, for the production of the genetic equivalents of inbred lines. For this reason data concerning the reproductive success of these plants are of importance. One factor contributing to the fertility of monoploids is spontaneous doubling of the chromosome complement in occasional cells resulting in the production of diploid tissue sectors which involve the anthers and ovules.

The One-Way-Mirror Technique As A Scientific Approach To The Study Of Magazine Readership, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1948

The One-Way-Mirror Technique As A Scientific Approach To The Study Of Magazine Readership, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Coextensive with the problem of production in modern civilization is that of consumption. To ascertain what, where, when, and why certain commodities are purchased or utilized presupposes that a certain amount and kind of research has preceded. This applies to all commodities produced, manufactured and sold. Market research today is essential to the manufacturer of the product and it is employed in America's foremost and progressive industries. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent annually for the purpose of ascertaining what the consumer wants and what his buying interests and habits are.

Further Observations On Claviceps Purpurea, Lois H. Tiffany Jan 1948

Further Observations On Claviceps Purpurea, Lois H. Tiffany

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Utilizing techniques which make possible the production of perithecia and ascospores of Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul. in the laboratory ( 9), more detailed observations upon various phases of sclerotial and ascospore germination of this fungus have been made. The ergot bodies (sclerotia) used in these studies were collected from forty-one species of Iowa grasses. (Table I). Collections of C. pusilla Ces. were also made on three Andropogon species.

The Cuprous-Cupric Complex In Hydrochloric Acid Solution, Harvey Diehl, P. A. Carlson, D. Christian, E. H. Dewel, M. R. Emerson, F. K. Heumann, H. W. Standage Jan 1948

The Cuprous-Cupric Complex In Hydrochloric Acid Solution, Harvey Diehl, P. A. Carlson, D. Christian, E. H. Dewel, M. R. Emerson, F. K. Heumann, H. W. Standage

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the process described by Diehl and Brouns (1) for the direct determination of copper in bronze by electrodeposition from hydrochloric acid solution using hydroxylammonium chloride as anodic depolarizer and controlling the cathode potential automatically (3), the sample of bronze is dissolved in hydrochloric acid by the dropwise addition of nitric acid or of hydrogen peroxide. Subsequently the solution is diluted and electrolyzed, the cathode reaction being· first the reduction of cupric ion to the chlorocuprous ion, CuCl3==, and then the deposition of copper. The time of electrolysis can be materially shortened if the first reduction is effected …

The Place Of Biology In General Education, Martin L. Grant Jan 1948

The Place Of Biology In General Education, Martin L. Grant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

General Education is the term used to express the idea that there is a common body of knowledge, of attitudes, and of behavior-patterns that should be considered of such universal significance as to necessitate its formal incorporation into the curriculum of all collegiate institutions. The idea is as old as formal education itself, and back in the day when there was only one curriculum in some educational institutions all education was general education. However, as specialized and professional curricula developed, fewer and fewer areas of subject matter remained to be explored by all students of a particular college, such that …

A Quarterly Standard Mineral Analysis Of The Waters Of Four Iowa Lakes In The Ruthven Area, Ada Hayden Jan 1948

A Quarterly Standard Mineral Analysis Of The Waters Of Four Iowa Lakes In The Ruthven Area, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The silt bottomed prairie lakes of Clay and Palo Alto Counties, Iowa, have shallow, hard, alkaline, turbid waters. They are located in the youngest of the glacial drifts, in which the soils are highly calcareous and rich in mineral salts. The more shallow lakes with relatively flat, saucer-like basins, support a rich population of rooted, submerged, and emergent vegetation which minimizes wave action. The lakes whose basins are deeper than four feet are unfavorable to the growth of emergent vegetation and rooted submerged types do not survive the wave action except in the shallow waters along the depositing shores.

Subspecies In Iowa Ornithology, James Hodges Jan 1948

Subspecies In Iowa Ornithology, James Hodges

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A brief search of ornithological literature reveals that during the last two years (1946 and 194 7), 27 important papers have been published dealing either directly or indirectly with subspecies of North American birds. If we were to include Mexico, Arizona, and tropical areas in this count it would of course be much higher. On the other hand, from 1941-1945 only one paper was published in the pages of IOWA BIRD LIFE dealing exclusively with the question of subspecies. From 1941-1947 a few short notes appeared within the pages of this journal mentioning subspecies. It is the purpose of this …
