A High Resolution Photographic Guide For Identifying Fiddler Crabs From The Shores Of The Atlantic Ocean, Abby Hutchins

Undergraduate Student Work

This project created a comprehensive, high-resolution photographic guide for identifying the 23-known species of fiddler crabs inhabiting the coastal regions of Europe, East Africa, North America, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America. The primary objective is to produce clear, detailed images that highlight key morphological features necessary for accurate species identification. These images will serve as an accessible reference for educators, students, and scientists involved in biodiversity studies, ecological monitoring, and conservation efforts. Enabling gender equality by empowering women to fully engage in modern society is fundamental for building resilient and sustainable communities. While Iceland is recognized as a global leader in gender equality, the experiences of various immigrant groups can differ considerably, especially during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery. Given the rapid increase in the immigrant population in Iceland, it is crucial to gain a deeper understanding of the processes surrounding immigrant women’s integration strategies, with an emphasis on gender equality through the lens of intersectionality. In this conceptual framework paper, I critically chronicle the historiography, policy, and scientific literatures of learning disabilities (ld) and provide a conceptual framework for reframing these as master narratives. I defined master narratives as the pre-existent sociocultural forms of interpretation. I interrogated the a) cultural-historical; b) the federal definition of ld within idea, c) the educational-professional academic and focused on, the d) social and emotional literature of ld. The master narratives from these literatures included: a) ld as a boy who struggles with reading, ld as a symbolic complex, and the legacy of the term "feebleminded", d) assumptions about learning, …

The Moderating Role Of Aphantasia In The Link Between Emotion Regulation And Relationship Satisfaction, Brock Borchardt, Dilbur D. Arsiwalla

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

The goal of this study was to examine if poor visual imagery (i.e., aphantasia) moderated the link between emotional regulation and relationship satisfaction. We had 314 participants report on a survey about visual imagery, emotional regulation, and relationship satisfaction. Our original hypothesis was supported using the overall emotion regulation scale as well as five of the six different subscales of emotion regulation. However, further research is needed to better understand the rationale behind why aphantasia moderates this relationship.

Actor–Partner Model Of Parenting And Co-Parenting Practices And Youth Resilience During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Olivia Aspiras, Jaimie O'Gara, Justine Radunzel

The present research examined parents' perspectives of co-parenting and supportive and hostile parenting as predictors of youth resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 47 mother/father dyads who had at least one K-12 child (Mage = 11.40, SD = 3.92). Mothers and fathers each completed an online survey that measured parenting, co-parenting, and youth resilience during the pandemic. Data were analyzed using the actor–partner interdependence model. Results revealed a positive relationship between mother supportiveness and perceived youth resilience; in contrast, increased father supportiveness was associated with lower perceived youth resilience. The Impact Of Emergency Haying On Grassland Birds In The Conservation Reserve Program Habitats Of Northwest Iowa, Claire Widmer, Ai Wen, Kenneth Elgersma, Mark Vandever

Data was collected on breeding grassland bird communities in northwest Iowan Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields. Within those fields, CRP grasslands in drought areas could be hayed or grazed for emergency management to harvest supplemental forage for livestock. We compared the bird communities in emergency hayed versus undisturbed grasslands to understand how the drought induced emergency haying affected the grassland birds. Using distance sampling, we found that significantly higher bird richness was found in undisturbed habitat areas compared to the emergency managed hayed areas in the same CRP parcel. Period poverty is the inability to access menstrual products due to economic vulnerability. In the US, 1 in 5 menstruating students miss school due to period poverty. Educational disparities that derive from period poverty must be investigated. At the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), a student-led initiative aims to reduce academic barriers created by period poverty. Within one semester, nearly 3,000 tampons and 2,500 pads were distributed across 17 academic buildings. This study evaluates the impact of free menstrual products on campus by analyzing usage and student feedback, revealing a positive effect on academic attainability. The study of entheseal changes (EC) has a lengthy history within biological anthropology, aiding in the reconstruction of habitual activities, lifestyles, and physiological stress experienced by past populations. However, most existing research has focused on postcranial entheses, leaving cranial entheses largely unexplored. This study aims to apply the Coimbra Method, a recent and standardized scoring system, to analyze cranial entheses and investigate the relationship between age, sex, and entheseal changes. By observing and scoring entheses associated with the insertions of five cranial muscles, this research will contribute to a deeper understanding of skeletal plasticity in response to mechanical stress. Objective: Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus support recreational fisheries throughout much of their geographic distribution. One characteristic of the species is for males to exhibit alternative reproductive tactics to maximize production of progeny. These divergent strategies coupled with size-selective harvest by anglers create the potential for fisheries-induced evolution (FIE). As such, we sought to characterize genetic diversity of five fished and five unfished Bluegill populations to test for the occurrence of FIE. Forbs (“wildflowers”) are important contributors to grassland biodiversity but are vulnerable to environmental changes. In a factorial experiment at 94 sites on 6 continents, we test the global generality of several broad predictions: (1) Forb cover and richness decline under nutrient enrichment, particularly nitrogen enrichment. (2) Forb cover and richness increase under herbivory by large mammals. (3) Forb richness and cover are less affected by nutrient enrichment and herbivory in more arid climates, because water limitation reduces the impacts of competition with grasses. While many teachers do not feel confident teaching pronunciation because of limited preparation in different areas, research has demonstrated positive effects of training in pronunciation pedagogy, as teachers who receive such training develop cognitions (i.e., knowledge, beliefs, thoughts, actions) that align with current tenets of pronunciation pedagogy. Drawing on this assertion, this paper reports the results of a qualitative case study with five pre-service teaching-English-to-speakers-of-other-languages (TESOL) teachers enrolled in a pedagogical pronunciation course as part of their teacher training program. Neotropical regions near the equator are recognized as speciation “hot spots” reflecting their abundant biodiversity. In western South America, the coasts of Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, the Galápagos Archipelago, and northern Peru form the Tropical Eastern Pacific biome. This area has the greatest heterogeneity of sympatric fiddler crab species of any portion of the planet. Since the coastal fauna has not been assessed for almost 50 years, we studied fiddler crab species diversity in Ecuador and on the Galápagos Archipelago.
