A Different Approach To The Study Of Pressure-Volume Relationship Of Gases, Harold Wengert Jan 1969

A Different Approach To The Study Of Pressure-Volume Relationship Of Gases, Harold Wengert

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

One of the problems in teaching science for general education is that all too often the ideas and concepts are given to the prospective learner before he has had an opportunity to wrestle with them himself.

Open Letter To Science Teachers, Clifford G. Mccollum

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Our responsibilities as science educators have never been greater than they are today." I know personally that such a statement has been made regularly since the 1930s, and I suspect it was commonplace some before that. These responsibilities have had various emphases identified as the reason for their being. The emphases have included such applications as those made to industry, engineering, medicine, warfare, and space exploration.

Understanding Of Science By Elementary Teachers, Daryl D. Smith Jan 1969

Understanding Of Science By Elementary Teachers, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper reviews some studies relating to the subject matter competency of pre-service elementary teachers. Attention is called to the importance of an understanding of the nature of science by the elementary major, and the need to measure this understanding. A study designed to test the understanding of and attitude toward science in elementary majors is discussed. The scores of elementary majors on the understanding of science measure are compared with those of other prospective teachers (both secondary and elementary). It is suggested that a measure of this type could be used as a basis for evaluation of innovations in …

The herbarium of the University of Northern Iowa has moved into new quarters in the recently-constructed Science Building. The facility contains enough cabinet space for over 50,000 plant specimens, a herbarium office, and ample storage space for the botanical portion of the Martin L. Grant library, given the university recently by Mrs. Janet Grant. The herbarium office houses Dr. Grant's bibliography of Iowa plants, called the "Records of Iowa Plants". This cross-indexed file contains thousands of references on 3" x 5" cards to publications on the taxonomy and distribution of Iowa plant species. These are available for use by interested …

Sheath And Cellular Irregularities Of Sphaerotilus Natans Caused By Ferric Ammonium Citrate And Glucose, David H. Tjaden, Robert C. Goss Jan 1969

Sheath And Cellular Irregularities Of Sphaerotilus Natans Caused By Ferric Ammonium Citrate And Glucose, David H. Tjaden, Robert C. Goss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Growth in citrate broth was turbid, rusty brown in color with some slime formation. The glucose broth had a milky white color with pronounced slime accumulation. Cells grown on the citrate medium were uniformly spaced within the sheath and ranged from 1 to 4 μ in length and 1 to 2 μ in width. The sheath was uniform in shape and ranged from 2.0 to 2.5 μ in width in young cultures. Sheath irregularities began to appear by the third day and were the greatest, 1 to 12 μ, by the fifth day when they gave the appearance of disintegrating. …

The Flora Of Iowa Revived, Lawrence J. Eilers Jan 1969

The Flora Of Iowa Revived, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Research on the flora of Iowa is being renewed by Dr. Robert F. Thorne and the author. A manual of the vascular plants of the state is planned for the near future. Some revisionary study of Iowa taxa needs to be completed first, but it is hoped that interested botanists will assist in the task. Although there are a few areas that need additional intensive collecting, the state has been quite well surveyed, floristically, and there is need to integrate the information into a usable publication.

A Bilateral Color Anomaly In The Crayfish, Orconectes Immunis (Hagen), Virgil E. Dowell, Leonard P. Winier Jan 1969

A Bilateral Color Anomaly In The Crayfish, Orconectes Immunis (Hagen), Virgil E. Dowell, Leonard P. Winier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A live female crayfish; Orconectes immunis (Hagen) exhibiting unusual body coloration was given to the biology laboratories at the University of Northern Iowa for study. Its right half, including antennae and other appendages, was colored an azure blue; the left half was colored normally. This bilateral coloration mosaicism persisted following molting. Gynandromorphism as a corollary factor is eliminated on the basis that no apparent external sexual intergradation of sexual dimorphism was noticeable. Somatic mutation in early embryonic development is the most likely explanation. A mutation in a gene affecting some aspect of the biochemical synthesis pathway in pigmentation seems to …

Chlorophyll Content In Mutants Of Glycine Max (L.) Merril During Seedling Development, Susan Coiner, Alan Orr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Xantha form mutants of Glycine Max (L.) Merril were examined for their chlorophyll content during early seedling development. Trifoliate leaves of 8-24 day old dark green, light green and yellow plants differed significantly in chlorophyll content. Total chlorophyll content in all three phenotypes increased up to approximately the 16th day followed by a slight drop from the 16th to the 24th day. The relative proportion of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b differed among the three leaf types.

Ethanol Precipitates Of Cephalobus Sp. (Nematoda: Cephalobidae) Inhibiting The Growth Of Staphylococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus, Rollin H. Heinzerling, Robert C. Goss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dried ethanol precipitates prepared from nematodes incubated for 7, 8, 15, 21 and 22 days produced significant inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus. The 7 and 15 day precipitates showed a linear increase in inhibition. Microscopic observation indicated that plates incubated for 8, 15, and 20 days had the greatest fraction of molting nematodes. Molting was correlated with inhibition.

Relationship Of Pectic Enzymes To Abscission, Daryl D. Smith Jan 1969

Relationship Of Pectic Enzymes To Abscission, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A comprehensive review of work pertinent to changes in the separation zone prior to abscission is presented. Since these changes are largely pectic in nature the involvement of pectic enzymes is suggested. The results obtained for the role of pectin methylesterase (PME) in abscission are as follows: (1) A localization of PME activity in the abscission zone of tobacco pedicels was established; (2) Pollination of tobacco flowers is followed by an increase in PME activity in the abscission zone while PME activity remains static after prevention of pollination (the flower abscises within a week if not pollinated); (3) Application of …

Chromosome Number And Pollen Size In The Genus Aristida, Donald G. Delisle Jan 1969

Chromosome Number And Pollen Size In The Genus Aristida, Donald G. Delisle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Chromosome numbers and pollen measurements are given for sixty-four collections representing eight species in the grass genus Aristida from central and southwestern United States. Meiotic chromosome counts of N=22, 33, and 44, in A. purpurea are reported for the first time. Counts of N=11 and 22 in A. fendleriana, A. glauca, and A. wrightii, are new for these species, as are counts of N=11 for A. longiseta and A. roemeriana. The relationship of pollen size and ploidy level is examined in five taxa, and the occurrence of intraspecific polyploidy in the genus is noted.

Notes On Prairie Species In Iowa. Ii. Establishment By Sod And Seedling Transplants, Paul A. Christiansen, Roger Q. Landers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Success in establishment of prairie species was measured using sod and seedling transplants. Sod transplants, 25 cm in diameter and 10-20 cm in depth, were successful for 42 species. Fourteen species present in sod transplants set in both annual weeds and Bromus inermis sod illustrated the effect of competition on vigor. After two years, in the weedy plot, all species were present, 11 had flowered and 5 had spread. In the Bromus plot, 9 species had died, 2 had flowered and none had spread. Seedling transplants of 48 of 52 prairie species were present after overwintering. One-quart plastic bags and …

The Effects Of Sedimentation On The Water Quality Of The Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Larry R. Mitzner, Donald B. Mcdonald Jan 1969

The Effects Of Sedimentation On The Water Quality Of The Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Larry R. Mitzner, Donald B. Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Coralville Reservoir is a flood control impoundment located on the Iowa River just upstream from Iowa City. Since being placed in operation in 1958 its capacity at conservation pool level has been reduced nearly 20% by sedimentation. Studies of the reservoir's fishery have been conducted since 1961. Fish population surveys do not indicate a noticeable modification of the fish population due to siltation. A decrease in the total fish population, primarily sport fish, occurring early in 1965, was due to oxygen depletion caused by heavy farm land runoff. Limnological studies of the Iowa River and the reservoir have been …

Removal Of Brushy And Wooded Quail Habitat In Three Southern Iowa Counties In Recent Years, M. E. Stempel Jan 1969

Removal Of Brushy And Wooded Quail Habitat In Three Southern Iowa Counties In Recent Years, M. E. Stempel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In southern Iowa there are still remnants of once extensive brushy upland game cover. Cost-share and privately financed brush removal programs, however, are further reducing the amount of remaining game cover. Three counties are considered here. Davis, Monroe and Wapello counties had some federally assisted clearing on 490 farms in the past 4 years. On 14 farms (1,820 acres) in Wapello County, since 1956, 82 acres of woody cover were removed by all methods. This included 25% of the choice quality upland game cover.

Recent Status Of Ruffed Grouse In Iowa, Eugene D. Klonglan, Gene Hlavka Jan 1969

Recent Status Of Ruffed Grouse In Iowa, Eugene D. Klonglan, Gene Hlavka

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The ruffed grouse is a native Iowa game bird, formerly present in forested areas over much of the state. Intensive land use that replaced forested areas with croplands or grazed them heavily with livestock resulted in the disappearance of the species from all but northeastern Iowa by about 1930. Ruffed grouse are presently found in suitable forested habitat in all of Allamakee and Clayton Counties, most of Winneshiek County and in portions of Fayette, Dubuque, Delaware and Howard Counties immediately adjacent to occupied range in the three counties first listed. Spring roadside drumming counts have given an index of 1.6 …

Statistical Methods For Integrating Populations Of A Fauna Collected At Various Localities, D. E. Simon, J. H. Elwell Jan 1969

Statistical Methods For Integrating Populations Of A Fauna Collected At Various Localities, D. E. Simon, J. H. Elwell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Parametrs characteristic of Atrypa Histrix, collected from various localities of the Cerro Gordo Member of the Upper Devonian Lime Creek Formation, were measured as: 1) Length, 2) Width, 3) Thickness, 4) Number of growth lines, and 5) Number of plications. The consistency of data obtained within a sample location was tested against similar data representing the total population by means of F-tests. Results suggested that the three sample locations represented at least two statistically random sample populations. These statistical differences in the single biologic population may be alternately interpreted as: 1) the population differed prior to preservation, or 2) is …

The Multistructured Course - A Preliminary Analysis, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1969

The Multistructured Course - A Preliminary Analysis, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An experimental program in which students may enroll in courses for varying amounts of credit, and select course objectives that are in line with their educational goals is described. A preliminary analysis of the results indicates that students tend strongly to approve of the goals of the experiment, have performed well, and, on the whole, react positively to the educational conditions involved. Early evaluation appears to show that some of the techniques commonly used for introductory courses are applicable, and others not very applicable, to education in courses involving upper division and graduate students.

Notes On The Effects Of Pretreatment Of Spores On The Iodinophile Vacuole Of Henneguya Exilisl, Dennis Galinsky, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1969

Notes On The Effects Of Pretreatment Of Spores On The Iodinophile Vacuole Of Henneguya Exilisl, Dennis Galinsky, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Spores of Henneguya exilis from the gills of Ictalurus punctatus were exposed to Lugol's solution, Best's carmine, Bauer-Feulgen reaction, and Mitchell's ammoniacal silver nitrate techniques in smears and sections. All of the techniques recognized as specific for glycogen stained the iodinophile vacuole selectively but not specifically, but adjustments to techniques were required. Fresh spores held at room temperatures or chilled for 24 hours were similar insofar as the iodinophile vacuole is concerned, and freezing had little effect. A week or more at room temperature after chilling or freezing for one day resulted in more diffuse staining reactions.

An Evaluation Of The Futures Market In Live Beef Cattle As A Means Of Shifting The Risk Inherent In Cattle Feeding, Philip Paul Hufferd Jan 1969

An Evaluation Of The Futures Market In Live Beef Cattle As A Means Of Shifting The Risk Inherent In Cattle Feeding, Philip Paul Hufferd

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been extensive research and study in the area of hedging price risk of agricultural products on commodity futures markets. This work, however, has been limited almost entirely to the hedging of grain. The first attempt to conduct futures trading in a live commodity began on November 30, 1964, with the advent of futures trading in live beef cattle. In the absence of research and experience with trading of this kind there has been a tendency to transfer conventional futures market logic, with respect to hedging, almost unaltered to the futures market for live cattle. Some researchers have felt, …
