Fish Distribution In The Skunk River Below Ames, Iowa, Kenneth D. Laser, Clair G. Rausch, Craig L. Olson, Kenneth D. Carlander

The Skunk River has been straightened most of the way from Ames to Colfax. In the summer of 1968, 24 species of fish were collected. There were few species other than minnows, and red shiner (Notropis lutrensis), bigmouth shiner (N. dorsalis) and sand shiner (N. straminous) were most abundant. Water levels were above normal during the study and effects of pollution upon fish distribution were not pronounced. The diversity index, d, at the station where treated-sewage wastes entered, was lower than at stations up and down stream but was higher than at the four stations farthest downstream. Bull Bison Behavior Traits, Daniel M. Herrig, Arnold O. Haugen

Behavior of bull bison (Bison bison bison) was studied during June, July, and August 1968 at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, Valentine, Nebraska. Ingestive, eliminative, grooming, sexual, agonistic and investigative behavior patterns were observed. Movement patterns and interspecific relationships were also observed.

Motivating The Earth Science Student, Kenneth E. Frazier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study to determine teacher controlled motivating factors that could be improved in the E.S.C.P. program. This involved questionnaires completed by 266 ninth grade students and 295 twelfth grade students. The study indicates that certain factors could and should be improved.

This paper is based upon a report entitled "A report on observations on the biology of certain amphipods (Class Crustacea) in Banff, Jasper, Yoho & Kootenay National Parks and environs in Alberta-British Columbia, Canada" sent to The Director, National Parks Branch, Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in January, 1969. The study relates specifically to the biology of Hyalella azteca Sauss. and Gammarus lacustris lacustris Sars. Each collection area has been photographed for its characteristic breeding area. After standardized testing of high-ability science students who were participants in a National Science Foundation Summer Science Institute, there is evidence to indicate that their understanding of science intangibles is dependent upon the section of the program in which they were enrolled. The participants in the mathematics and biochemistry sections demonstrated significantly better understanding of science.

Our present achievements in science and technology appear to contrast vividly with our present lack of achievement in solving social problems. We can nourish a man in the supreme isolation of outer space-but we cannot adequately feed the children of Calcutta or Harlem. We hope to analyze life on other planets-but we have not yet learned to understand our own neighbors. We are attempting to live on the moon-but we cannot yet live peacefully on our own planet.

The gastrocnemius muscle from white mice (Swiss Webster, female; NLW, male and female; varying in age from 6 to 13 weeks and in body mass from 8 to 36 gm) were analyzed by means of Huxley's Equation for Heterauxic Growth where double logarithmic plots were performed of muscle size as a function of body mass. These mice had been grown in normal gravity. Relative wet mass, relative dry mass, and percent dry mass did not display significant changes with body mass. Percent noncollagen nitrogen [NCN] in the dry muscle, however, did show an effect which was not significantly different from …

A team of nine members assumed the responsibility for teaching 1250 students utilizing team teaching and large group instruction on an experimental basis. Students used modified versions of AAAS and IPS science curriculum materials. Modification of materials was necessary to operate effectively with laboratory groupings of 125. Heterogeneous grouping and individual progress was stressed with students working at their own rate. Physical changes included the removal of three walls to provide for a U-shaped complex. Additional laboratory supplies were also purchased due to class size. The program was closely associated with the class guide system and flexible scheduling in operation …

Five species of tardigrades, Macrobiotus areolatus, M. islandicus M. hufelandii, Milnesium tardigradum, and Hypsibius tuberculata are reported from lichens growing on Iowa trees. Factors influencing tardigrade distribution are discussed, especially with reference to the lichen species represented in the samples, and the tree substrate. Hypsibius tuberculata was found to be most abundant about 2 meters above ground level, and to become less abundant below, while the other four species were found to be most abundant near the ground and decline steadily with increasing height. No clear evidence of preference of northern, southern, eastern, or western exposures was found.

Incubating quail embryos in a magnetic field resulted in accelerated somite growth. Twenty % of the experimental embryos in one series of experiments exhibited reversed torsion. The heterogenous magnetic field as opposed to the homogenous magnetic field was more effective in causing these effects. The theory of magnetic action on a biological system is discussed.

Iowa's First Ruffed Grouse Hunting Season In 45 Years, Eugene D. Klonglan, Gene Hlavka

A 16-day hunting season on ruffed grouse, the first in 45 years, was held in northeastern Iowa in 1968. Season dates were November 2 to 17, inclusive, with a daily bag limit of two and a possession limit of four birds. The 1150 hunters who took part in this season bagged 720 grouse, or 0.6 birds per hunter for the entire season. It took an average of 11.8 gun hours of hunting to bag one ruffed grouse. Birds were flushed at the rate of a bird per 1.9 hours of hunting. An average of 5.4 shots was fired per bird …

Pretreatment Of Spores As A Factor In Dimensional Analysis Of Two Species Of Histozoic Myxosporida, Caroline Congdon Long, Paul A. Meglitsch

Spores of Henneguya exilis, taken during the summer of 1968 from the gills of Ictalurus punctatus caught in the Des Moines River near Knoxville, Iowa, and of a species of Myxosoma apparently closely related to Myxosoma ovalis, taken from the gills of Carpiodes velifer from the same locality, were subjected to storage at room temperatures, 4° C, and deep freezing. Repeated measurements of spores under different pretreatment showed that the dimensions of the spores and polar capsules remained remarkably stable, as did ratios of the dimensions of spore parts. Effects Of Hypothermia On Absorption Of P-32 In Mice, Bruce C. Luecke

Twenty male white mice were intraperitoneally injected with 210 microcuries of P-32 each. Ten were returned to a 25 degree C. environment and ten others to a 5 degree C. environment with similar food, light, and water provisions. Half of each temperature group was killed and frozen 24 hours following injection while the remaining ten were killed and frozen three weeks following injection. Relative absorptive functions of six organs were studied showing that hypothermia resulted in lower P-32 uptake and longer retention.

Fauna Of Testate Amoebae From The Rhytidome Of Juglans Nigra, Ronald E. Goddard, Paul A. Meglitsch

Samples of bark without visible lichen or moss cover were taken from a Juglans nigra located in a city lot in Des Moines, Iowa, remote from water. Euglypha ciliata, E. cuspidata, Microchlamys patella, Centropyxis aerophilus, and two unidentified species of Difflugia were found, ranging from ground level to heights of 35 feet. An estimate of population density, based on a modification of the most probable number count, showed evidence of zonation on the tree surface, with C. aerophilus restricted to near ground level, M. patella occurring approximately evenly up to 35 feet, and E. cuspidata most abundant at moderate heights. …

Anatomic And Physiologic Effects Of The Antithyroid Drug, Propylthiouracil, On Rats, A. James Shold

Administration of the antithyroid drug, propylthiouracil (PTU), to albino male rats at the dietary level of 0.1 % PTU is accompanied by a decrease in growth rate and a decrease in the oxygen consumption rate. After the initial administration of PTU, prolonged treatment with the drug did not further lower the oxygen consumption rate. The ratios of organ weight to body weight for the testes, stomach, thyroid, eyes, pituitary, and brain were found to be larger in the treated rats than in the untreated controls. The United States Supreme Court has handed down a decision declaring unconstitutional the Arkansas statute prohibiting the teaching of evolution in the state's public schools. The National Science Teachers Association and the National Education Association filed a brief as amici curiae in support of the appellants, Mrs. Susan Epperson and H. H. Blanchard.
