Performance Of Sorghum Hybrids In Relation To Sources Of Resistance To Biotype C Of The Greenbug, T. F. Kwolek, R. E. Atkins, O. S. Smith Jan 1984

Performance Of Sorghum Hybrids In Relation To Sources Of Resistance To Biotype C Of The Greenbug, T. F. Kwolek, R. E. Atkins, O. S. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper presents results of research on the agronomic performance of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] hybrids derived from several germplasm sources that possess resistance to biotype C of the greenbug [Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)]. Significant differences among hybrids with resistance from different sources were evident for grain yield, seeds/head, heads/plant, days to midbloom, and plant height. SA7536-1 seemed superior to KS30, IS809, and PI264453 resistance sources in potential for producing high-yielding hybrids with resistance to biotype C. Greater numbers of seeds/head was the component largely responsible for the yield advantage of the SA7536-1 hybrids.

Late-Winter Abundance And Substrate Associations Of Benthos In Pool 13, Upper Mississippi River, Wayne A. Hubert, Gene E. Darnell, Daniel E. Dolk Jan 1984

Late-Winter Abundance And Substrate Associations Of Benthos In Pool 13, Upper Mississippi River, Wayne A. Hubert, Gene E. Darnell, Daniel E. Dolk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In Pool 13 on the Upper Mississippi River substantial differences were observed in macroinvertebrate abundance and substrate composition among six habitat types: tailwater, main channel, main channel border, side channel, slough, and lake. Densities were highest in slough, main channel border, and lake habitats, but the number of taxa was greatest in tailwater and main channel habitats. The abundance of 38 of the 42 identified taxa was significantly correlated with either the percentage of at least one particle size fraction or the percentage of organic matter in the substrate. Variation in substrate composition among the six habitat types appeared to …

The Conversion Of A Recreational Camp Into A Residential Environment And Educational Learning Center, Ellen Wells Ernst Jan 1984

The Conversion Of A Recreational Camp Into A Residential Environment And Educational Learning Center, Ellen Wells Ernst

Graduate Research Papers

Educational systems in our country have continually faced the challenge of providing educational opportunities for all our children. As well as maintaining a national goal of high educational standards, we have also encouraged an individualistic approach to meeting needs of students. Our educational systems must deal with an extremely wide range of personalities, beliefs, backgrounds, expectations, incomes and abilities. Teachers have a wealth of information available to help them determine students' individual needs and ways of meeting these needs. Students' needs can vary from cognitive-knowledge and moral-motivational needs to personal-emotional and physical needs. Curricula and programs generally attempt to insure …

A Self-Concept Improvement Plan For Institutionalized, Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents, David Curtis Canaday Jan 1984

A Self-Concept Improvement Plan For Institutionalized, Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents, David Curtis Canaday

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This project involved a self-concept improvement program for institutionalized, emotionally disturbed adolescents. Subjects were eighteen adolescents between the ages of 13 and 15 who were in a state residential institution for nonpsychotic, emotionally disturbed, acting out adolescents. The subjects were divided into two groups by the institution staff. Both groups completed the Pier-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale and listed positive self-statements as pretest and posttest measures. The experimental group participated in a self-concept improvement program for 12 40 minute sessions twice a week for six weeks. The program consisted of lectures, discussions, and activities designed to facilitate self-understanding, a positive self …

Private School Teacher Perceptions Of Elementary School Childrens' Needs: A Clarion Call For Elementary School Counselors, Karen I. Kerr Jan 1984

Private School Teacher Perceptions Of Elementary School Childrens' Needs: A Clarion Call For Elementary School Counselors, Karen I. Kerr

Graduate Research Papers

Recent research has confirmed that divorce contributes to a major crisis in the lives of most children, with stress engendered by that crisis often entering into the academic learning of school-age children. Between 1960 and 1975, the number of one-person households doubled. Jenkins (1976) reported 9,000,000 children under the age of eighteen live in single-parented families. The United States Bureau of Census reported, "more than 18% of the nation's school age children live with a lone parent" (1982, p. 536) and projected that 48% of all children born in 1980 will live a considerable part of their life with a …

A Review Of Evidence On The Effect Of Teaching Content Area Reading On Student Achievement, Debra Takatsuka Jan 1984

A Review Of Evidence On The Effect Of Teaching Content Area Reading On Student Achievement, Debra Takatsuka

Graduate Research Papers

Quality of education is an issue of primary concern in the United States today. Accusations that children are graduating with inadequate academic skills have been frequent. Concern has been expressed regarding declining SAT scores, and there has been a general outcry for the establishment of minimum standards for both high school and college graduation. The necessity for students to acquire a solid education currently ranks as a high individual and social priority (Criscuolo, Vacca, & LaVorgna, 1980).

Adolescent Suicide: An Investigation Of Causes And Prevention Measures, Pamela J. Wehrkamp Jan 1984

Adolescent Suicide: An Investigation Of Causes And Prevention Measures, Pamela J. Wehrkamp

Graduate Research Papers

Suicide is not a recent phenomenon among adolescents. Young people have taken their own lives for as long as history has been recorded. It is not coincidence, or by accident, that literature, too, is full of reports of adolescent suicides (Konopka, 198J). Ophelia drowns herself after she is rejected by Hamlet. Romeo kills himself when he believes his beloved to be dead, who in turn kills herself when realizing Romeo had committed suicide.

Decreasing Debilitating Test Anxiety In Elementary Remedial Readers, H. Marlene Watson Jan 1984

Decreasing Debilitating Test Anxiety In Elementary Remedial Readers, H. Marlene Watson

Graduate Research Papers

Diagnosis is an integral part of the remedial reading program. It gives direction, facilitates decisions, and provides a basis for choosing instructional techniques and materials. It is a complicated process of choosing what information is appropriate, what decisions are to be made, and what methods can best implement these decisions. In short, diagnosis is a comprehensive process necessary to reading instruction. In fact, as its best, it is a type of instruction known as diagnostic teaching. One factor in this process of diagnosis is assessment (Peters,1977).

Performance Of Aphasic Listeners On An Expanded Rtt Subtest Presented Verbally And Non-Verbally, Ann Elizabeth Folkestad Jan 1984

Performance Of Aphasic Listeners On An Expanded Rtt Subtest Presented Verbally And Non-Verbally, Ann Elizabeth Folkestad

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A controversy exists in the literature concerning the nature of aphasia. Some authorities believe that aphasia involves a loss of the linguistic elements of language. Other investigators maintain that aphasia is a performance deficit founded in a reduced ability to use essentially-preserved linguistic competence. This study addressed aspects of the above controversy. Asked specifically was the question of whether the mechanism underlying aphasia involves a neurolinguistic loss and thus, is specific to language, or alternately, involves a non-language specific interference with the accessing of retained capacity. This investigation examined the following issues: whether there are one or several patterns of …

Applications Of Aerial Imagery In Identification Of Natural Areas, Kendall Duane Wessel Jan 1984

Applications Of Aerial Imagery In Identification Of Natural Areas, Kendall Duane Wessel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There is current interest in utilizing aerial imagery to obtain information on natural vegetation. The purpose of this study is to utilize and evaluate commonly available aerial imagery to identify potential natural areas suitable for preservation and to initiate development of a procedure for imagery interpretation to meet this goal.

Clayton County, located in the northeastern quarter of the state of Iowa, was selected for study because it is dissected by steep, narrow stream valleys that are unsuitable for cultivation and may still possess native vegetation of a quality suitable for preservation.

Baseline or control communities were selected from known …

The Relationship Of Lean Body Mass To Resting Metabolic Rate, Maryann Butler Jan 1984

The Relationship Of Lean Body Mass To Resting Metabolic Rate, Maryann Butler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous investigators have established predictors affecting basal metabolic rate. These include body size, age and sex, surface area, temperature and environment, and exercise. Conflicting data have been reported concerning the expression of basal metabolism in units of square meters of surface area. It was the purpose of this study to observe the relationship of lean body mass (LBM) to resting metabolic rate (RMR) in college-age males of high lean body mass and low lean body mass. A second purpose was to determine the validity of a relatively new method of measuring resting metabolic rate using a whole body calorimeter (WBC). …
