Predicting Evolutionary Consequences Of Greater Reproductive Effort In Tripsacum Dactyloides, A Perennial Grass, Laura L. Jackson, Chester L. Dewald Apr 1994

Predicting Evolutionary Consequences Of Greater Reproductive Effort In Tripsacum Dactyloides, A Perennial Grass, Laura L. Jackson, Chester L. Dewald

Faculty Work

To test the prediction that a mutation causing greater reproductive effort will result in reduced vegetative vigor, we compared the seed production, growth, and carbohydrate status of normal and pistillate genotypes of the grass Tripsacum dactyloides differing in seed production by up to fourfold. We evaluated the costs of reproduction by two methods: experimental manipulation of reproductive effort and comparison of high and low-yielding genotypes. Despite the large difference in seed production, normal and pistillate (high-yielding) genotypes did not differ in growth rate over a 1-yr period. Contrary to predictions, carbohydrate reserves in the high-yielding genotype were significantly higher at …

An Analysis Of Physical Science Textbooks For Scientific Literacy, Hussein A. Baarah, Trudi L. Volk Jan 1994

An Analysis Of Physical Science Textbooks For Scientific Literacy, Hussein A. Baarah, Trudi L. Volk

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Developing the scientifically literate individual is considered to be an important objective of science education in the United States (Blough and Schwartz 1990, Maarschalk 1988, Murane and Raizen 1988, National Science Teachers Association 1971, 1982; and Simpson and Anderson 1981). The scientifically literate person understands how science, technology and society influence one another, and is able to use this knowledge in everyday decision making (AAAS 1989, Yager and Harms 1981).

Selected Factors Contributing To Major Depression In Women, Jewel E. Cooper Jan 1994

Selected Factors Contributing To Major Depression In Women, Jewel E. Cooper

Graduate Research Papers

An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from depression of one sort or another at a cost of some $27 billion a year in loss of work productivity, permanent disability, depression related alcohol and drug abuse, and the actual costs of treatment (Rovner, 1992). But Americans are ill at ease, ill-prepared and ill-informed about how to deal with depression. According to Rovner, a survey by the National Institute of Mental Health found that more than half of those polled believe depression may be linked to personal or emotional weakness.

Historical Interpretation Views Separation Clause More Narrowly, Gareth R. Volz Jan 1994

Historical Interpretation Views Separation Clause More Narrowly, Gareth R. Volz

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Many times school districts and other government agencies attempt to justify acts of censorship targeted directly at religious people on the basis of what has been commonly referred to as the "separation of Church and State." Although the phrase "separation of Church and State" never appears in our Constitution, Bill of Rights, or other founding documents, groups opposed to religion in general, and Christianity in particular, argue that the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment (which prohibits states from interfering with churches) somehow requires that there be a wall of separation between religious people and governmental affairs.

Marking Gender In Solitude: Ritual Exclusivity In The "Mens' Movement", Monika P. Strom Jan 1994

Marking Gender In Solitude: Ritual Exclusivity In The "Mens' Movement", Monika P. Strom

Iowa Journal of Communication

The search for self-actualization that once drew Henry David Thoreau to the woods of Walden now prompts thousands of men to pack up emotional baggage for a weekend's commune with other men in the great outdoors. As participants in the so-called "men's movement" of the 1990s, their object is to "know deeply who you are as a man. Realize you are not alone" (Stanton 116). The men's movement is more accurately a coagulation of equal rights activism, consciousness-raising, academic men's studies, and mythopoetic "Wild Man" ritualism. The trends share a groping toward self-understanding, as well as recognition of the need …

Effects Of Competition And Predation On Prothonotary Warblers And House Wrens Nesting In Eastern Iowa, Timothy Brush Jan 1994

Effects Of Competition And Predation On Prothonotary Warblers And House Wrens Nesting In Eastern Iowa, Timothy Brush

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In a fragmented midwestern floodplain forest, a small Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea) population experienced high competition with House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and mammalian nest predation in 1988-89. Despite the provision of 3 types of nest boxes and higher water levels, Prothonotary Warblers did not nest successfully and decreased in the fragmented forest in 1990-91. House Wrens used >90% of the nest boxes in both years. Wren territories doubled within the nestbox area, while remaining constant on an unmanipulated area. In contrast, a larger warbler population had high nesting success during 1990-91 in a relatively unfragmented, wetter forest tract. Such forests, …

Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii Jan 1994

Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa fens are small, mineorotrophic peatlands maintained by shallow groundwater. Eighteen fen sites located across northern Iowa were mapped and radiocarbon dated to assess the timing of initial peat accumulation. The radiocarbon ages span the Holocene, ranging from 1,240 to 10,900 B.P.; however most fens postdate 5,000 yr B.P. The dominance of late-Holocene ages suggests that Holocene climatic change may have strongly influenced the record of peat accumulation. During the mid-Holocene Iowa was warmer and drier than at present, and peat was degraded or accumulated slowly in fens. The range of ages also implies that the commencement and subsequent rate …

Nomenclatural Changes For Some Diatoms Found In Iowa, David B. Czarnecki Jan 1994

Nomenclatural Changes For Some Diatoms Found In Iowa, David B. Czarnecki

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Nomenclatural revisions for four diatom taxa found in Iowa, two of which are presently maintained in the Loras College Freshwater Diatom Culture Collection (FDCC), are necessary because of systematic interpretations of the Division Bacillariophyta. Achnanthidium hauckianum (Grun.) Czarnecki comb. nov. was originally assigned to the genus Achnanthes Bory. Three taxa were previously assigned to the morphologically diverse genus Navicula Bory. These are Cavinula weinzierlii (Schimanski) Czarnecki comb. nov., Craticula cuspidata var. major [(Meist.) Czarnecki comb. nov. and] Craticula halophila var. subcapitata (0str.) Czarnecki comb. nov.

Science Notes - Ice Cream: An Edible Experiment In Thermodynamics Jan 1994

Science Notes - Ice Cream: An Edible Experiment In Thermodynamics

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Ice keeps things cold because it absorbs energy from its surroundings, melting as it does so. The temperature at which a solid melts, called its melting point, is the same temperature at which the liquid form freezes. For pure water, this is 0° or 32° F. However, if some other substance, such as salt, is added to the water or ice, the freezing/melting point temperature is lowered. Thus, you can use salted ice to freeze liquid water.
