A Review Of The History And Development Of Emeritus Status At The University Of Northern Iowa And Its Predecessor Institutions, 1876-1996, Ross A. Nielsen

History of Education Book Gallery

The names of 443 individuals are listed in this publication, all faculty members or administrators for whom I found evidence that emeritus status had been conferred, or that they had fulfilled the emeritus eligibility qualifications operating on the university campus at the time of completion of their active professional careers. I make no claim that this is an all-inclusive list. Listings found in catalogs and bulletins are incomplete. There is no source for identifying deceased emeriti. Prior to 1981, institutional policy did not require retiring or resigning faculty or administrators to apply for emeritus status; upon completion of twenty years …

Assertiveness Training For Women, Carol L. Charles Jan 1996

Assertiveness Training For Women, Carol L. Charles

Graduate Research Papers

Women, who make up more than half the human population, face developmental experiences that traditional human development theories inadequately explain or address. Practitioners treating women have had to choose between traditional-individualistic and feminist-relational models of development. The broader implication of this theoretical choice is either the valuation or devaluation of feminine gender traits. Thus, interventions would likely vary along with underlying philosophy as would the practitioner's view of developmental wellness; This fact and related concerns are the foci of this paper.

Influential Factors In Chinese American Culture: Implications For Counselors, Lisa L. Whitsett Jan 1996

Influential Factors In Chinese American Culture: Implications For Counselors, Lisa L. Whitsett

Graduate Research Papers

The core of responsibility regarding counseling, according to Ivey, Ivey, and Simek-Morgan (1993), is to "do nothing that will harm the client or society" (p. 15). Along with this belief, the authors suggest that counselors must always be aware of clients' individual and cultural differences. As counselors in the field become more knowledgeable regarding treatment, they are recognizing that a lack of cultural awareness restricts their ability to apply counseling theories to multicultural issues.

Aggression In Young Children, Lin-Yu Huang Jan 1996

Aggression In Young Children, Lin-Yu Huang

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is three-fold: (1) to review the definitions and methodologies cased in the study of aggression; (2) to review research on aggression in children; and (3) identify recommendations for reducing aggression. This paper is motivated largely by fears regarding the influence of aggression on children. Increases in aggression among children may create larger social problems in the future.

A Relationship Between River Modification And Species Richness Of Freshwater Turtles In Iowa, Terry J. Vandewalle, James L. Christiansen Jan 1996

A Relationship Between River Modification And Species Richness Of Freshwater Turtles In Iowa, Terry J. Vandewalle, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Comparisons were made of turtle populations in Red Rock Reservoir and the major rivers of the Mississippi River and Missouri River damage systems in Iowa. Of the inland rivers of the Mississippi drainage examined in this study, the Des Moines River had the least amount of remaining turtle habitat. Number of turtle species ranged from five in the Des Moines River to 11 in the Mississippi River, but only three species were found in Red Rock Reservoir. In the Missouri drainage, number of turtle species ranged from three in both the Little Sioux and Nishnabotna rivers to five in the …

The Effect Of Fathers' Absence On Families, Eldon L. Swenson Jan 1996

The Effect Of Fathers' Absence On Families, Eldon L. Swenson

Graduate Research Papers

Although an annual event in this country is the celebration of Father's Day, but many of the statistics uncovered by the author of this paper show a civilization which is rapidly becoming a fatherless society. Never before have so many men abandoned their children. In 1986, this country crossed an important landmark--for the first time in this nation's history a majority of poor families were father absent (U. s. Bureau of Census on Poverty, 1992).

Pathogenicity Of Septoria Aquilina Isolated From Black Hills Bracken, A. Gabel, C. Salazar Jan 1996

Pathogenicity Of Septoria Aquilina Isolated From Black Hills Bracken, A. Gabel, C. Salazar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Septoria aquilina, a pathogenic fungus isolated from Pteridium aquilinum growing in the Black Hills was studied from 1991-1995. S. aquilina sprayed at 8,000 conidia/ml on transplanted fronds followed by high humidity caused severe necrosis seven days after inoculation and disease severity increased until fronds died. Severe necrosis also developed from inoculations at 4,000 and 2,000 conidia/ml. Less severe symptoms developed from inoculations at 1,000 conidia/ml. Inoculations at 4,000 conidia/ml not followed by high humidity caused less necrosis than inoculations at the same concentration with high humidity. Inoculations at 4,000, 2,000, and 1,000 conidia/ml on fronds grown from spores caused similar …

Susan Faludi's Backlash As Constitutive Rhetoric, Susan L. Biesecker-Mast Jan 1996

Susan Faludi's Backlash As Constitutive Rhetoric, Susan L. Biesecker-Mast

Iowa Journal of Communication

Since about the middle of the nineteenth century, American politics have been punctuated by the emergence, transformation, and marginalization of a women's movement. Beginning in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention and ending in 1920 with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, the first wave of the women's movement struggled toward the recognition of American women as United States citizens. After more than forty years of comparative inactivity, a second wave of the women's movement emerged in the mid-1960s which continued, extended, and challenged both the strategies used and the goals set by the first …

Renewable Energy: Economics And Public Policy To Fuel The Transition, Dean Eyler Jan 1996

Renewable Energy: Economics And Public Policy To Fuel The Transition, Dean Eyler

Draftings In

We lie at a unique place in history, one where humanity's drive to industrialize has created an environmental crisis that may threaten the very existence of the planet. The new challenges posed by environmental crises are becoming shockingly apparent. Scientists are discovering, and illustrating to policy-makers, new ways in which we are destroying the earth and its surrounding atmosphere. Although these kinds of revelations are by no means new, the scale of destruction in these scenarios is immensely greater than previously projected. Warming of the atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect, depletion of the ozone layer, destruction of forests, acid …
