The primary purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of parent training in reducing conduct symptoms in adolescents. The study also investigated the relationship between parent training and parental satisfaction with the parent-child relationship and with their parenting performance. Participants in the study consisted of parents of adolescent children. The participants consisted of two groups: (a) the control group (N = 17) and (b) the parent training group (N = 11 ). The purpose of this qualitative study was to listen to teachers who have graduated from a specialized science minor program at the University of Northern Iowa and learn what their current experiences could share with the current undergraduate program. The nine participants who were interviewed were all graduates of this program. They were chosen by the researcher out of a larger group of PEMST graduates with respect to gender, year graduated, and science specialist versus generalist teaching positions. Aquatic organisms such as fish, sponges and mussels are exposed to mixtures of chemicals in polluted waters including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides and heavy metals. The tissues of some of these organisms are found to have a lower concentration of pollutants compared to the surrounding waters and/ or sediments. This suggests that some aquatic organisms may possess a means of detoxifying environmental pollutants. For this study, primary hepatocytes of the marine winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) and freshwater rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnen) hepatomas were exposed to environmental pollutants to determine whether a multidrug-resistance (MDR) p-glycoprotein (pgp) extrusion pump is involved in …

Intensively managed rotational grazing is a grazing method in which livestock are moved through a series of paddocks over a three to six week rotation. Vegetation in resting paddocks is allowed to regrow, renew energy reserves, and rebuild plant vigor to provide nutritious forage for livestock. Consequently, vegetation in the paddocks is in different stages of growth which creates a mosaic of vegetation heights across the pasture landscape. I hypothesized that the mosaic of vegetation heights resembles the native tallgrass prairie grazed by bison prior to European settlement. The mosaic may be attractive and beneficial to breeding grassland birds. Several …

The primary purpose of this paper is to provide an extensive review of the literature and research related to anorexia nervosa, and to emphasize the importance of prevention programs in school settings and the role of school psychologists in the prevention and intervention process. Chapter two of this paper covers anorexia nervosa and the theories regarding its etiology, complications, co-morbidities, risk factors, and treatment. Because anorexia nervosa is a disorder which most frequently begins during adolescence, chapter three addresses the specific factors of adolescence that can lead to eating disorders.

Research over the past decade indicates that a wide range of psychological and interpersonal problems are more prevalent among those who have been sexually abused than among individuals with no such experiences. This paper summarizes what is currently known about these potential impacts of child sexual abuse. The various problems and symptoms described in the literature on child sexual abuse are reviewed in a series of broad categories including post-traumatic stress, emotional pain, avoidance, an impaired self, and interpersonal difficulties. Genetic Characterization Of The Gene Coding For A 77 Kd Ascospore-Specific Protein In Aspergillus Nidulans, Chad Edward Galer

This study is one of the first molecular characterizations of a gene whose expression is exclusive to ascospores of Aspergillus nidulans. A 900 base pair (bp) fragment of this gene was cloned into a modified pUC19 plasmid and used to transform uridine auxotrophs of A. nidulans. Previous studies showed that A. nidulans is amenable to DNA mediated transformation by site-specific recombination (Fincham , 1989). Transformants were severely deficient in the production of ascospores, with decreases in viable ascospores per cleistothecia of 80-99.75%. Southern blotting experiments confirmed that integrative homologous transformation occurred in all cases, and that a tandem insertion is …

This is an introductory paper on the historical perspectives of the social acceptance of homosexual behavior, as well as contemporary views on the division of pro-gay and pro-development (growth out of homosexuality) groups. In conjunction with this, a discussion of the etiology of male-same-sex-sexual-attractions is proposed in accordance to genetic and environmental research. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of four 5th grade teachers and their perceptions of the influences on how and why they taught science in their classrooms. The four participating teachers who were from three school districts in Iowa were observed teaching science lessons and interviewed following the observations. The results of the study showed that the data obtained during the observations and interviews focused on three major themes. The restoration of damaged ecosystems, particularly at superfund sites is a complex issue. These sites present problems with revegetation attempts due to their unique chemical, physical, and biological properties. Revegetation of damaged ecosystems may be enhanced by mycorrhizal associations. The establishment of a facultative mycotroph, Festuca arundinacea Screb. (tall fescue) treated with a commercial fungal inoculum, was studied at a Galena, Kansas mining site. The evaluation of this revegetation project required the identification of endomycorrhizal fungi, Glomus c/arum and G/omus etunicatum in the inoculum. Traditional identification of these fungi based on spore morphology and other physical characteristics is not suitable …
