The West Delaware school district is located in northeast Iowa, halfway between Waterloo and Dubuque along highway 20. The district has approximately 650 students in grades 9-12 and employs 48 teachers. Four of these teachers teach science full-time, and two teachers from other departments pick up extra courses. The 150+ 8th grade students represented in this study were taught by two different science teachers, who also teach 7th grade science. 8th grade science is taught in a 45 minute day for the entire year, while 9th and 10th graders are taught on a 90 minute block schedule, with each class …

This project has been completed to improve the quality of instruction of the biology students at Iowa City West High School. A curricular unit covering plants has been designed keeping in mind the National Science Education Standards, the curricular benchmarks established by the Iowa City Community School District and the current research on how people learn. Applicable research that supports the inquiry approach to teaching biology, an outline of the daily events that occur during the course of the curricular unit, and examples of the use of inquiry teaching styles are included throughout this work.

Reading is a growing concern in the United States. Many students are leaving the educational system not ready to deal with the literary demands of everyday life and/or higher education. Factors that support students' growth in reading were reviewed. One specific factor that has a significant impact on literacy, which was a focus, was involvement of parents. What parents can do to assist their children's literacy development and attainment were also reviewed. A parent pamphlet design on reading at home came about from obtained information from the reviews.

Emotional intelligence is a concept developed by Salovey and Mayer in 1990. Since the first published work on emotional intelligence, others have modified the original idea by adding personality-like traits to the model of emotional intelligence. Consequently, there is a split in the conceptualization of emotional intelligence and the measurement of emotional intelligence; ability model assessment and mixed or trait model self-report assessment. The ability model of emotional intelligence has stood up to tests of discriminant validity over personality traits, unlike the mixed model of emotional intelligence. Background research commenced on characteristics, history, and readership of science fiction. Literature has shown that aerobic exercise can improve a senior citizen's health status and the associated quality of life. As of late, the question of whether strength training is also an important component of improvement in elderly living has surfaced. According to Dinsmoor, (1993 ), aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular fitness and boosts the body's ability to burn oxygen, but has little effect on strength and muscle mass. While aerobic exercise is associated with the improvement of cardiovascular fitness, the question remains as to whether additional benefits could be acquired through strength training. Arguably, the primary intention of conservation genetics is to preserve allelic variability within and among populations, because a lack of genetic diversity may adversely effect the viability of a population subjected to variable environmental conditions. The influence of such evolutionary processes as genetic erosion and inbreeding depression may be pronounced for increasingly small and isolated populations. Blue-spotted salamanders (Ambystoma laterale), though widespread and relatively common throughout northeastern North America, are marked by a pair of peripherally isolated populations at the southwestern boundary of the range. These populations are putative relicts of post-glacial isolation and thus provide a model from which …

The taxonomy of Physaria has continually been in a state of flux, especially certain groups of species within the genus. The Physaria reediana species complex (sensu Rollins) is an example of one of these problematic groups. The systematics of the Physaria reediana species complex was examined by a combination of techniques. A Bayesian analysis of 71 aligned sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) provided a fairly well-supported phylogeny (mean posterior probability per node: 0.5429) of a portion of the genus, which included the. species in the complex. ln KW ALP23 peptides containing Lysine and Trp, as the Trps were moved further in towards the center of the bilayer, Lys became the dominant anchoring residue (1). The goal of this project was to determine whether Arg exhibits snorkeling behavior similar to Lys, and is able to anchor the peptide in the membrane despite the repositioning of Trp in the RWALP peptides. Several candidate R W ALP23 peptides containing Tryptophan and Arginine with an alternating LeucineAlanine backbone were synthesized successfully. The purpose of this study was to find out if spontaneously arising point mutations occurred in canine e-kit and if these mutations contributed to the development of mast cell tumors in dogs. Specimens were collected from 11 dogs after tumors had been surgically removed or the dog had died. The e-kit DNA was amplified using PCR, and the previously established point mutations were searched for (London et al., 1999). The point mutations found in human mast cell lines were not detected in the canine e-kit DNA, but new mutations were observed. These new mutations, observed in 50% of the tumors, …
