Science And Design: A Personal Essay, Wendy Olson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The essay addresses why 'Intelligent Design' (ID) does not qualify as science, and why the distinction between science and ID matters. Furthermore, it discusses the anti-evolution undercurrent that characterizes ID politics. ID proponents give the impression that evolutionary theory is somehow faulty or incomplete, that educators are bound to "teach the controversy" or give alternate explanations for biological diversity, in the interests of academic freedom. Some of this stems from misinformation or misunderstanding of evolution and evolutionary theory, but much is motivated by religious belief, which brings the issue into the arena of constitutional law.

Truthfully, when I first received the e-mail with the heading Academic Rigor (inviting me to write this essay), I thought the message would contain an advertisement for one of those pseudo-wonder pills which claim to remedy deficiencies in such thiemory recall or attention span – some way to increase antioxidants or neuron transmitting potential. Academic Rigor: A Panacea for What Ails Education Today. In our culture, multimillion-dollar industries revolve around such myths – the “quick-fix” for difficult issues.

The 1799 "discovery" of South America is credited to Alexander von Humboldt, an eclectically educated, ambitious, and antsy Prussian geologist-turned-adventurer whose exhaustive geological, meteorological, archeological, and anthropological surveys conducted over a five year sojourn through what are now Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and Cuba, defined this place of great mystery ostensibly by order of King Charles IV of Spain. The voyage that planted Humboldt on the South American coast represented a seed, in hindsight, for the expansion of the Spanish empire into the southern hemisphere of the new world. When children experience extreme chronic trauma as a result of the effects of the disruption of healthy attachment patterns, a disorder known as Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) can develop. The importance for mental health counselors to understand the etiology of RAD cannot be overemphasized. Symptoms most often associated with this disorder include the inability to trust, failure to develop intimate relationships, or show affection, lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem, and anti-social behaviors and attitudes (Levy & Orlans, 1998 as cited in Sheperis, Renfro-Michel, & Doggett, 2003). This manuscript points out the deficiencies school counseling programs in Kenya for children/adolescents affected/infected by HIV/AIDS. In addition, the paper is intended to inform, guide, and encourage policy makers, program developers, and school counselors as they develop school counseling interventions for the disease. The focus of the paper is limited to children/adolescents because they bear the greatest burden of HIV/ AIDS infections. The paper also provides evidence for planning and implementation of culturally and developmentally relevant, school-based counseling interventions. This manuscript provides a therapeutic group model to address gender role conflict in males based on a narrative approach. The use of story telling and metaphor are central to the process because they are reflective of how men tend to communicate. This approach reflects a shift away from traditional counseling approach often seen as the antithesis of a masculine ideology. Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) clinically affects children and adolescents through the display of unwanted disruptive, hostile, defiant, and oppositional behaviors. Development of these can be linked to parental psychopathology, family and marital dysfunction, poor parent-child interaction, atypical parenting, maternal age, substance abuse, poor supervision, and inconsistent or harsh discipline. The effects of ODD lead to impaired social functioning, depression, low self-esteem, academic failure, substance abuse, delinquency, and family discord. This activity is an interdisciplinary method for engaging students in biological investigations through working with living aquatic invertebrates. The learning cycle begins with students conducting fieldwork to collect aquatic invertebrates. Students then think and propose ideas to create an observation record that they can use to study their organisms in the classroom. The field of substance abuse has had a history of relapse. Both In-Patient and Out-Patient Treatment facilities have experienced the "revolving door" effect (Walton, Blow, and Booth, 2001). D.R. Laws found in research he conducted that 80% of the patients treated, relapsed 12 months after treatment and two-thirds of the relapses were within 90 days of treatment (Laws, 1999). The federal government has begun questioning the validity of these programs in light of skyrocketing costs for substance abuse treatment (Craig, 2004).
