DuPont manufactures a non-stick coating for pans brand-named Teflon. Teflon sealed pans make cooking easier - eggs won't stick to the frying pan and cookies won't stick to the cookie sheet. Yet researchers have long worried about negative effects of Teflon and the chemical compounds used to make it, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA): is PFOA a carcinogen? Instead of waiting until the Teflon coating sloughs off in black flakes, should households get rid of their non-stick pans now and return to using PAM and Crisco in mass quantities? Much has been written about the importance of learning styles in instructional design. Learning styles can be measured by the use of personality profiles such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Learning styles can also be measured by Learning Style Inventories and defined by cognitive theory such as Gardner's multiple intelligences. This literature review explores the different approaches to the study of learning styles and the practical use of learning style indicators as a tool for selecting instructional strategies.

Available techniques for determining age from human cranial remains are limited. This unique study examines the usefulness of Meindl and Lovejoy's method of determining age based on ectocranial suture closure patterns and compares it to a multifactorial approach which employs various age determining factors from across the cranium. In this study, the multifactorial model includes the following cranial aging indicators: dental development and attrition, the amount of closure of the maxillary and basilar sutures, and general pathological degeneration. While several studies (DiClemente, Wingood, Crosby, Cobb, Harrington, & Davies, 2001; Pistella & Bonati, 1998; Whitaker, Miller, May, & Levin, 1999; Whitaker & Miller, 2000) have found a relationship between close mother-child relationships during adolescence and adolescents' delayed initiation of sex and increased contraceptive use, only a handful of studies (Diiorio, Kelley, & Hockenberry, 1999; Dittus, Jaccard, & Gordon, 1997; Rodgers, 1999) have examined the influence of father-son relationships on college males' sexual behavior and contraceptive use. Self-efficacy research has shown that successful past experiences have an influential impact on self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977). The purpose of this study was to compare academic and social self-efficacy between university honors and non-honors students. It was hypothesized that honors students would score higher on academic self-efficacy, but would have lower social self efficacy than their non-honors peers. Participants were invited to complete questionnaires on self-efficacy and background information. Results show that honors and non-honors students do not differ significantly in their general or social self-efficacy, but honors students had significantly higher academic self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to assess children's free play preferences on outdoor play structures. Many contemporary children are not merely deprived of play but are essentially deprived of the healthiest and richest forms of play. The richest forms are described by children as the most fun, the most exciting, the most interesting, and by theorists and writers are described as "deep play". Deep play is defined as nonliteral behavior, and a transformation of reality Mannell, & Klieber, 1997. The amount of coverage sexual minority youth have received in the research literature over the past 15 years was examined. A content analysis of all research articles published in Psychology in the Schools and The Journal of School Psychology from 1990 to 2005 was conducted. Comparisons were made between the topic areas receiving the most coverage in 1990 versus 2005. Results revealed that issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth were discussed in only 0.4% of the articles. Topic areas receiving the most coverage included assessment, intervention, ethical and professional issues as well as race and diversity issues, …

Schools in the United States have had a difficult time identifying strategies for the effective recruitment and hire of teachers from ethnically underrepresented backgrounds. The purpose of this study was to identify the steps taken by Iowa's urban school districts to recruit and hire teachers from ethnically underrepresented backgrounds. This thesis looks at nuclear films, commercial and governmental, that were released between 1951 and 1964. Special attention is paid to the recursivity that existed between the propagandic, often outrageously inaccurate Civil Defense films made by the United States government and the subversive popular films made by visionary dissidents.

The films are divided into three periods. The earliest period focuses on Samuel Fuller's Pickup on South Street and the Robert Aldrich 's Kiss Me Deadly (based on the novel by Mickey Spillane), along with some of the earliest Civil Defense films. Mass-market romance novels remain top sellers among popular fiction and paperback in the American market; however, academic scholarship examining the popular romance novel is dated. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the gender roles of the heroine and hero characters within the novels. This thesis is a content analysis that examines seventy-two Harlequin romance novels, publication dates 1971-2006. The findings in this thesis suggest that the gender roles of the heroine and hero deviate drastically from those analyzed in the 1980's and 1990's, specifically regarding sexuality and gender performance. Perceptions Of Parental Rejection, Peer Rejection, And Peer Victimization In Relation To Self-Reported Depression, Clayton Joseph Egli

The present study compared perceptions of parental rejection, peer rejection, peer victimization, and depression in a sample of children from the Midwest. Self-report measures were completed by 71 participants (ages 7-12) in their regular classroom setting. Correlational analyses were conducted and found significant positive relationships between the identified constructs. Maternal rejection, paternal rejection, relational victimization, overt victimization, and peer rejection were found to correlate with depression for girls. Boys had significant correlations for maternal rejection, paternal rejection, and relational victimization with depression. Overt victimization did not significantly correlate with depression for boys. The peer rejection measure showed insufficient reliability for …

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of gender identity on expectancies for success and perceived task value. The Short form of the Bern Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI-SF) was used to identify four gender identities, androgynous, feminine, masculine, and undifferentiated. The Self- and Task- Perception Questionnaire measured expectancies and task values on three physical activities. One hundred thirty-three students (62 males and 71 females) at the University of Northern Iowa who were enrolled in the aerobic training session of the personal wellness class participated. This report details an action research project initiated by a team of university researchers with area female African refugees. The goal was to determine the primary issues facing this population and to provide potential solutions. Through focus groups, five problems emerged. Upon identification of these problems, and in conjunction with the refugees and other citizens, the researchers proposed the formation of a community-wide coalition charged with specific objectives to meet the needs of this growing population. Subsequent to the project, an inter-agency coalition, which reports to the city's human rights commission, was established to ameliorate the problems of the refugees.

George Herbert Mead observed that identity is formed through social processes. Mead (1934) suggested that individuals offer communicative gestures to which others respond. Gestures that gain desired responses are repeated, whereas gestures that yield negative responses are eliminated.
