An Economic Critique Of Birch And Cobb’S The Liberation Of Life, Wei-Erh Chen Apr 2007

An Economic Critique Of Birch And Cobb’S The Liberation Of Life, Wei-Erh Chen

Major Themes in Economics

The discussion concerning humans and the environment has intensified in recent years. Now, more than ever, we must ask how we as economists can engage in a conversation regarding environmentalism when the participants come from a myriad of disciplines. I posit that it is only through an understanding of the other disciplines’ ethics and values that the economist can meaningfully engage in the conversation. This paper is an exercise in this interdisciplinary understanding. First, Charles Birch and John B. Cobb Jr.’s ecological viewpoint is presented. This is followed by the economic prescriptions arising from the ecological viewpoint. A subsequent critique …

The Effects Of Seeding Rate Of Prairie Grasses And Forbs On Native Plant Establishment In A Prairie Reconstruction. Iowa Department Of Transportation Final Report., Dave W, Williams, Daryl D. Smith Mar 2007

The Effects Of Seeding Rate Of Prairie Grasses And Forbs On Native Plant Establishment In A Prairie Reconstruction. Iowa Department Of Transportation Final Report., Dave W, Williams, Daryl D. Smith

Faculty Work

The Iowa DOT is seeking ways to improve practices associated with revegetation projects to increase establishment of native grasses and forbs. Iowa DOT has developed various seed mixes for re-vegetation projects (Iowa DOT 2005). Each seed mix has the potential to result in a different plant community. Results from this research project will provide information on the seeding rates for species needed for optimal establishment of grasses and wildflowers in future Iowa DOT prairie plantings as well as determine if current seeding practices are adequate. This information can be used to revise or develop seeding rate recommendations for revegetation projects.

The Effects Of Seeding Time On Native Plant Establishment In A Prairie Reconstruction, Dave W. Williams, Daryl D. Smith

Faculty Work

The Iowa DOT is seeking ways to improve practices associated with revegetation projects to increase establishment of native grasses and forbs. One of these practices is to seed native grasses and forbs between Apr 01 - June 30 and between Aug. 01 - Aug. 31 (Iowa DOT 2001). We investigated seeding at different times during the growing season to determine the most appropriate seeding time for optimal establishment of prairie grasses and wildflowers.

Kiloclips And Millipens: An Introduction To Units Of Measure, Matthew D. Bannerman, Casey J. Brown, Doug Martin Jan 2007

Kiloclips And Millipens: An Introduction To Units Of Measure, Matthew D. Bannerman, Casey J. Brown, Doug Martin

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article presents a physical science activity for introducing units of measure and the role of human beings in deciding units of measure and their standards. These important science ideas are introduced through inquiry, and in a way that makes this activity appropriate for the beginning of the school year. The manner that this activity is done promotes mental engagement, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the targeted concepts. In doing so, it helps set expectations for the entire course that students will be actively engaged in learning. The activity uses common objects to serve as standards for mass and …

Can A Bird Build-A-Beak? Using Inquiry To Address Student Misconceptions About Animal Adaptation, Katherine Larson, Mandy Kemp Jan 2007

Can A Bird Build-A-Beak? Using Inquiry To Address Student Misconceptions About Animal Adaptation, Katherine Larson, Mandy Kemp

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The fifth grade activity presented here is a modified version of a common cookbook approach to teaching animal adaptations. The original activity gave step-by-step directions that provided few opportunities for students to be engaged in deep thinking. In presenting our version of the activity, we make clear the critical role of the teacher in promoting higher order thinking and engagement. This animal adaptation activity helps students understand how the structure of various bird beaks determines the type of food it can successfully acquire and eat. This activity addresses two common misconceptions: that animals choose their adaptations and that animals adapt …

It's Alive! I Think . . .: Students Investigate What Defines Something As Living, Garrett Hall, Jesse Wilcox Jan 2007

It's Alive! I Think . . .: Students Investigate What Defines Something As Living, Garrett Hall, Jesse Wilcox

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Students often have misconceptions about what makes something alive or not, and few have a concept of what characterizes living things similar to that of biologists. The activity presented here mentally engages students in an inquiry-based way to teach students about the characteristics of life that will be revisited throughout the school year. We also use this activity to explicitly draw students' attention to effective inquiry skills, cooperative learning, and promote a deep understanding of the nature of science. The activity described here promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, C, and G, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1-6.

A Summer Full Of Science: Creating Summer Science Education Opportunities For Elementary Children, Deanna Savits, Ramona Satre Jan 2007

A Summer Full Of Science: Creating Summer Science Education Opportunities For Elementary Children, Deanna Savits, Ramona Satre

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science learning shouldn't stop when school is out for the summer. Opportunities abound to build a presence for science during the summer months (Hymer, 2005). Distances and finances to offer minds-on, hands-on science instruction sometimes restrict those living in rural communities. This article addresses how one small, rural school district successfully developed, planned and carried out a one-day summer science camp by enlisting the help of local high school volunteers. This summer science camp serves as an example of how an idea can grow and touch the lives of many others. This article promotes National Science Education Content Standard A …

An Inventory Of The Vascular Flora Of Hamilton County, Iowa (2001-2004), Jimmie D. Thompson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A botanical survey of the vascular flora of Hamilton County, Iowa was conducted from 2001 to 2004. During this survey 973 taxa (761 native) were encountered. A search of the literature and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for additional documented specimens added 28 taxa to the flora. This total of 1001 taxa places Hamilton County fourth in vascular plant richness among inventories conducted in Iowa since 1950. A checklist including common names of most taxa, habitat and abundance data for all taxa encountered during the current survey is presented. Information on earlier collections includes source and …

Fall And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats (Lynx Rufus) In Iowa, Kelcey J. Brockmeyer, William R. Clark Jan 2007

Fall And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats (Lynx Rufus) In Iowa, Kelcey J. Brockmeyer, William R. Clark

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a widely distributed native felid of North America but nearly disappeared from Iowa due to habitat loss and unregulated harvest that occurred during the century after European settlement. Bobcats are repopulating the state and are now relatively common in southern Iowa. This study was part of a research project to understand the ecology of the species in Iowa's landscape so that conservation plans could be established. We determined food habits by the examination of stomach contents from 100 bobcat carcasses that were accidentally killed in traps, killed by automobiles, or radio-marked individuals found dead during …

The Ground We Walk On: An Effective Analogy For Exploring Soil Characteristics, Sally Wilson, Meher Vani Bojja Jan 2007

The Ground We Walk On: An Effective Analogy For Exploring Soil Characteristics, Sally Wilson, Meher Vani Bojja

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Soil is common to all of us, so common that few people think about it and its importance in our everyday lives. The activity presented here provides an analogy useful for helping students design experiments and explore how soil particle size affects its behavior. Originally a simple “cookbook” demonstration for community college students, we restructured it to be more inquiry oriented so that it mentally engages students and promotes several important goals for science teaching. We believe the modified activity is applicable across a broad grade/age range, perhaps from upper elementary to some introductory post-secondary science courses. This activity promotes …

Introversion : Relationship With Mental Well-Being, Elizabeth A. Balder Jan 2007

Introversion : Relationship With Mental Well-Being, Elizabeth A. Balder

Graduate Research Papers

This paper explores connections between introversion and decreased mental well-being. The author sought to discover whether introverts are more vulnerable to depressive symptoms than extroverts. Overall findings show introverts are more vulnerable than extroverts to depression and decreased mental well-being. Introverts are more likely to be compliant and have lower self-esteem than extroverts, and also have less social support than extroverts, which can be detrimental when experiencing depression. Western culture gives preference to extroverted individuals, which pressures introverts to attempt to change their personalities.

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Chariton Conglomerate is a quartz limestone conglomerate of Pennsylvanian age found in six exposures in southern Iowa and three exposures in northern Missouri. Distinctive features of the exposures in Iowa include quartz granules and rounded crinoid columnals. The objective of this study was to determine whether the quartz clasts could have originated in the crystalline rocks of Minnesota or Wisconsin. The average paleocurrent direction measured in interbedded sandstones was 178° (S.D. = 35 °). The average roundness of 75 crinoid columnals extracted from four exposures in Iowa was 30% (S.D. = 14%), defined as

roundness(%) = (D-d)/D x 100, …

The activity described here promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, B, and G, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, and 5.

Synergistic Relationships: Why Effective Teaching Is Complex, Michael P. Clough Jan 2007

Synergistic Relationships: Why Effective Teaching Is Complex, Michael P. Clough

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The crucial role of teachers in creating powerful learning environments has been a consistent feature of editorials and articles appearing in ISTJ under my editorship. Research makes clear that what teachers do significantly impacts their students' achievement, interest in a field of study, and attitude toward schooling in general. The cognitive and affective climate of classrooms is influenced by the learning and behavioral expectations set by teachers, the activities and instructional strategies they choose, the behaviors they exhibit when interacting with students, and many other important teacher decisions.

How Are We Stacking Up?: Current Reforms In Science Education Twelve Years After Publication Of The National Science Education Standards, Robert E. Yager Jan 2007

How Are We Stacking Up?: Current Reforms In Science Education Twelve Years After Publication Of The National Science Education Standards, Robert E. Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In education Science-Technology-Society (STS) is commonly viewed as another add-on to a course or the curriculum. This view portrays STS as being plagued with the same problems as traditional teaching of science and technology; information is transmitted to students by lecture, verification laboratories, or textbooks and other written materials. This article presents the case that STS instruction, when effectively implemented, captures more broadly key aspects of both science and technology, and does not succumb to the common problems of traditional instruction. Essential characteristics of effective science teaching are presented.
