This thesis addresses the hidden and invisible aspects of power in an effort to understand the effects these types of power have on the individuals who are unaware of their presence. It then questions if this power is hidden and invisible, how is effective resistance possible? I focus on the research and conceptions of a few political theorists including Steven Lukes, John Gaventa, and Michel Foucault that form the basis for much of the work on power. Today, full-time college students are working part- or full-time jobs while attending classes. The demands of work, added to the already high demands of college, may result in negative effects on the individual. However, some aspects of working may lead to positive effects. Previous research has largely focused on the effects of job demands on school performance and other outcomes in adolescents. Current research is lacking in studying the effects of working on college students. Formation Of Intercellular Junctions During Secondary Neurulation In The Tail Bud Region Of Developing Chick Embryos, Selena Mae Losee

During secondary neurulation, the tail bud of the developing chick embryo undergoes a transition from unorganized mesenchymal cells to a structured epithelial tube. Cells undergoing this process must polarize and then assemble specific molecules that allow them to create intercellular junctions. Intercellular junctions contribute to the cells' ability to adhere, communicate with each other, or block the movement of molecules between neighboring cells. Previous studies have suggested cell-to-cell junctions play an important role in cavitation of the tail bud and in organizing the lumina that form. Homocysteine And Cardiac Neural Crest Cell Cytoskeletal Proteins In The Chick Embryo, Anthony R. Mwakikunga, Amanda L. Clubine, Darrell J. Wiens

Faculty Work

Elevated serum homocysteine (Hcys) is correlated with cardiovascular disease and with embryonic malformations related to neural crest cells (NCCs). We predicted Hcys may alter the balance of actin networks, stress fibers and focal adhesions, altering migration. We cultured neural tube explants in control and Hcys-treated medium and visualized actin, α-actinin, vinculin, filamin, and LIM3 protein in NCCs migrating outward. In Hcys, phalloidin-stained actin in stress fibers was brighter, and vinculin was more abundant in focal adhesions and lamellipodia. α-actinin and LIM3 were also enhanced around nuclei and in focal adhesions, and α-actinin also in filopodia.
