This article discusses our approach to the first days of school. Students' first experiences in our classroom set the tone for the rest of the year. We start out the year with a black-box activity to engage students and begin helping our students understand the nature of science. This activity promotes National Science Education Standards G and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8.

A Turning Point Analysis Of Stephchildren's Communication With Their Nonresidential Parent's Family, Rebecca Diverniero

Stepchildren and their nonresidential parent's side of the family (NRPF) may encounter unique challenges in negotiating new questions of family membership as the child transitions into stepfamily life. The researcher conducted turning point interviews with 29 stepchildren to examine how they perceived and described communication surrounding shifting perceptions of family belonging with their NRPF during this transition. Data analysis yielded categories of turning points that made participants feel more like family with their NRPF, less like family with their NRPF, and several that depended on the situation, illustrating that the communication surrounding these events impacted perceptions and response to nonresidential …

Do You Feel Left Out Of Your Family?: An Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Ostracism, Anna F. Carmon, Joan R. Poulsen

Iowa Journal of Communication

Familial bonds have the potential to satisfy our need for human relationships, but they are also likely to cause us to be both victims and sources of ostracism. Feelings of ostracism likely stem from communicative experiences and may extend to perceptions of family satisfaction. It would seem ostracism mediates the relationship between family communication patterns and family satisfaction. Although the current study did not confirm the proposed model of ostracism, an alternative model is discussed. Further, individuals who are married and have children perceive less ostracism in their families than individuals who are in single and do not have children.

Professionally Accomplished Women's Perceptions Of Father-Daughter Communication: An Exploratory Study, Teresa M. Scott, Lynne M. Webb, Patricia Amason

Iowa Journal of Communication

A survey of 75 professionally accomplished women examined father-daughter communication during daughters' middle-aged years. The daughters' perceptions of relational closeness with their fathers were associated with family communication environment (both conversation and conformity-orientation). Furthermore, daughters' conflict management scores for competing-with-fathers were negatively associated with the daughters' state-communication-apprehension scores. Finally, many non-significant results are inconsistent with results previously obtained with college student samples, perhaps indicating that the influence of father-daughter communication may differ across the lifespan.

A carbon index (Cl) is one of many soil quality indicators that depends on organic carbon concentration. One of the values of a soil carbon index is in determining the impact of agriculture practices (i.e., tillage, crop rotation, N management, etc.) on soil organic matter status of mineral soils. Interactions of climate, parent material, topography, time, and organisms including human activities influence soil organic carbon (SOC). Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis L., Papaveraceae) is a plant rich in benzophenanchridine (isoquinoline) alkaloids such as sanguinarine and chelerychrine. Both isolated alkaloids and whole-tissue rhizome extracts have demonstrated in vitro anticarcinogenic (antiproliferacive) activity in limited immortalized cell culture models, but the relative contribution of various alkaloid constituents to whole-tissue extract activity, and whether or not various alkaloids may act synergistically, has not been investigated. We challenged four immortalized cell lines (Jurkat, K562, Ramos, U937) with various doses of chelerythrine, sanguinarine, and berberine (a structurally and functionally similar alkaloid absent from bloodroot), alone and in all possible combinations, and measured proliferation …

Cadherin-11 (cad-11) is primarily a mesenchymal cadherin that appears in delaminating neural crest cells. Its expression correlates with morphogenetic events and the pattern has been studied in mouse, rat and Xenopus embryos, but not during avian organogenesis. Our purpose was to investigate this pattern in the chick embryo during organogenesis using immunolocalization and in situ hybridization. Cad-11 was expressed in mesenchyme around the pharynx and aortic arches, eyes, auditory vesicles, lung buds, stomach, and nasal placodes. Neural expression included some cranial ganglia and also new neuroepithelium within the tail bud region undergoing secondary neurulation. We also found expression in epithelia …

We demonstrate the feasibility of using qPCR on DNA extracted from vaginal Gram stain slides to estimate the presence and relative abundance of specific bacterial pathogens. We first tested Gram stained slides spiked with a mix of 108 cfu/ml of Escherichia coli and 105cfu/ml of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Primers were designed for amplification of total and species-specific bacterial DNA based on 16S ribosomal gene regions. Sample DNA was pre-amplified with nearly full length 16S rDNA ribosomal gene fragment, followed by quantitative PCR with genera and species-specific 16S rDNA primers. The role of caveolin and caveolae in the pathogenesis of infection has only recently been appreciated. In this chapter, we have highlighted some important new data on the role of caveolin in infections due to bacteria, viruses and fungi but with particular emphasis on the protozoan parasites Leishmania spp., Trypanosoma cruzi and Toxoplasma gondii. This is a continuing area of research and the final chapter has not been written on this topic.

Background: Anecdotal evidence points to variations in individual students’ evolving confidence in clinical and patient communication skills during a clinical internship. A better understanding of the specific aspects of internships that contribute to increasing or decreasing confidence is needed to best support students during the clinical component of their study.

Methods: A multi-method approach, combining two large-scale surveys with 269 students and three in-depth individual interviews with a sub-sample of 29 students, was used to investigate the evolution of change in student confidence during a 10-month long internship.
