Second Graders’ Recycled/Craft Item Products Demonstrate Life Cycle Content Knowledge And Creativity Skills, Angela Naomi Webb, Audrey C. Rule

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Creativity is a necessary skill for students to become problem solvers in the rapidly changing 21^st century. This study’s main activity allowed students to demonstrate their content knowledge in an engaging way while also exhibiting creative strengths. Twenty-two second grade students (15 female, 7 male) of mixed ability levels at a Title 1 school produced projects using identical sets of recycled and craft items. They incorporated vocabulary words and images associated with the life cycles of four organisms: horse, dragonfly, sea turtle, and bean plant. Projects were analyzed for creative strengths as well as science concept integration. Student-made products …

The Effects Of Property Rights On Ocean Resources: Two Possible Solutions To The Tragedy Of The Commons, Nathan David Miller

Property rights affect how people use resources. Enforcement regimes are able to set clear laws with well-defined property rights. Governments set laws for conservation and economic success. Ocean resources suffer from overuse. Industry and the environment both benefit from regulations that promote ocean conservation. This paper will analyze how the current state of ocean property rights leads to the depletion of ocean resources. Though there are many possible solutions to overfishing, I will analyze two potential solutions to overexploitation in the commercial fishing industry: marine protected areas (MP As) and individual transferable quotas (ITQs ). All simulations of physical systems employ the use of numerical algorithms and approximations to accurately mimic a system's behavior. In classical molecular dynamics (MD), there exists an important tradeoff between the desired accuracy and time scale of a simulation. To decrease computational load and preserve long time scales, MD simulations have often ignored long-range physical interactions among particles after some arbitrary cutoff distance. In many cases, as this cutoff distance is decreased, the accuracy of a simulation significantly degrades.

Gothic Architecture, Geometry, And The Aesthetics Of Transcendence, Robert Bork

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In these remarks I will discuss Gothic architecture, geometry, and what I call the aesthetics of transcendence. I’ll focus mainly on the design of great buildings like Strasbourg Cathedral, whose spire is the tallest surviving work of the Middle Ages, a 466-foot symphony of intricately carved stone. I also want to talk about how I came to study and admire this material, starting out from a curiously backdoor approach involving the sciences. Ultimately, therefore, I will argue that Gothic architecture can be fruitfully compared to a variety of things, such as fractals, heavy metal guitar music, and dinosaurs. These are …
