Visual Communication And The Digital Turn, Bettina Fabos
Visual Communication And The Digital Turn, Bettina Fabos
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
I am very excited about the Digital Turn on multiple levels as a way of expressing ideas in visual form and making them more accessible and finding different ways to tell stories. As Joan Didion wrote, “we tell ourselves stories to live,” and I live and breathe that phrase.
For this presentation, my aim is to show you the new forms of communication that excite me to no end, and then talk about how our relationship with new media content producers has drastically changed. If you have never heard of SnowFall, an incredibly impressive piece of interactive media that …

Connecting Visual Communicators With An Auditory World: Exploring Communication Accomodation Processes In D/Deaf-Hearing Interactions, Genelle Timperlake Sanders, Stephanie Rollie Rodriguez
Iowa Journal of Communication
d/Deaf individuals' use of a visual-based language, American Sign Language (ASL), can lead to challenges in communicating and developing relationships with the larger hearing majority. This study uses Communication Accommodation Theory as a framework for exploring d/Deaf individuals' perspectives on communication with hearing individuals and the strategies they use to converge or diverge from hearing individuals during interactions. Through in-depth interviews conducted in ASL, participants were asked to recount experiences of communication interactions with members of the hearing majority and preferred strategies and motivations for convergence or divergence. Results identified convergence as a strategy to indicate interest in communicating with …

Graphic Communications Industry Trends And Their Impact On The Required Competencies Of Personnel, Sara B. Smith
Graphic Communications Industry Trends And Their Impact On The Required Competencies Of Personnel, Sara B. Smith
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The graphic communications industry is far-reaching and touches most people‘s lives on a day-to-day basis. The products affected are as diverse as computers and medical supplies, business cards and billboards, packaging and photos, and a car’s dashboard to the image on a t-shirt. As the current employees are retiring in record numbers, and the technology and business processes in the field are changing at a rapid rate, the need for well-prepared employees is greater than ever. In order to best prepare current students for positions in the field, educators need specific information to guide their curriculum development. This has been …

The Never-Ending Ethical Dilemma For Photojournalists: A Case Study Of Conflicts Between The Objective Reporter And The "Good Samaritan", Yung Soo Kim, Deborah S. Chung
Iowa Journal of Communication
When covering tragedies involving human suffering, photojournalists frequently face serious ethical dilemmas that force them to choose between the position of an objective reporter and a "Good Samaritan." Recent ethical controversies, such as the New York City subway photo case in the New York Post and the domestic violence photo essay published on TIME magazine's website, are only the latest additions to this dilemma. By using the situational ethics approach, this case study examines the controversies in terms of three situational characteristics-the presence of other helpers, the intention of the victim, and the possibility of intervention by the photographer-to assess …

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s plan to solve budget problems by dramatically cutting public education funding has once again sparked heated debate over the figurative and literal “value” of education. As other state governments consider similar proposals, educators feel increased pressure to justify how they go about the important job of teaching. Never before has research on academics been more important, especially in higher education where so little is publicly known about what professors do in their day to day profession. This is true of all ranks of professors within academia, but perhaps most critically of professors with tenure. In Professing …
Presidential Portrayal: Photographic Coverage Of Two Presidents, Yung Soo Kim, James D. Kelly
Presidential Portrayal: Photographic Coverage Of Two Presidents, Yung Soo Kim, James D. Kelly
Iowa Journal of Communication
A content analysis of photographs of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama in TIME, and Newsweek during the first six months of each president's first term tested four hypotheses grounded in social reality construction and framing theories. Tests showed significant differences in the predicted direction for all four hypotheses. Obama was portrayed as more informal and more independent. Photos of him were more likely documentary and of higher visual complexity. The increased access President Obama gave photographers encouraged a public image of the new Black president as approachable, independent, and personally similar to the largely White electorate he governs.

Evaluating A Wellness Program For Uni Faculty And Staff: Preparing For A Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michelle M. Breen
Evaluating A Wellness Program For Uni Faculty And Staff: Preparing For A Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michelle M. Breen
Honors Program Theses
The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) paid total annual employer medical premiums of $17,967,000 for 2008, an increase of 7.37% from 2007. If medical premiums continue to increase at this rate, UNI will pay $29,556,720 in annual medical premiums in 2015. UNI is not alone in facing rising healthcare costs. Healthcare costs were identified as the "most serious challenge to their bottom line" by 41. 7 percent of the employers in a survey by the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (Kumar 2009). The Business Roundtable Fourth Quarter 2007 CEO Economic Outlook Survey confirms these results with CEO's ranking the …
Effects Of Applied Behavior Analysis On Teaching Social Skills To Young Children With Autism, Michelle Yeggy
Effects Of Applied Behavior Analysis On Teaching Social Skills To Young Children With Autism, Michelle Yeggy
Graduate Research Papers
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 166 children are born with autism (Falco, 2008). With this continual increase of children being diagnosed there is a lot of pressure put on schools to provide the quality programming for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Children with ASD have delays with their language and communication skills, social skills and theory of mind, and also these children have challenges with sensory processing. Rogers (2000) wrote that social dysfunction is the single most defining characteristic of autism, and it is also one of the most important to overcome. …

Meeting The Needs Of The Adult Learner In The Instructional Design Environment, Takeisha Henfield
Meeting The Needs Of The Adult Learner In The Instructional Design Environment, Takeisha Henfield
Graduate Research Papers
There are an increasing number of adults who are seeking further education and training for various purposes, ranging from English as a Second Language to doctoral degrees. These adults possess different characteristics and require different conditions than traditional younger learners. In an effort to design effective instruction for adults as learners, the basic instructional design process should be understood. Through that understanding, a taxonomy of instructional design models as well as specific models can be discussed. The knowledge of adults' learning needs, plus an understanding of instructional design and its models, can help instructional designers produce more effective instruction for …

It was the process of becoming aware of the importance of graphic design as an essential tool for communicating ideas that led to my decision to continue my education in the field of graphic design. My prior degree in architecture also influenced my 1 graduate work since it has provided me with an understanding of the effective use of two and three-dimensional space. In general, it was the opportunity to make connections between architecture and graphic design that prompted me to study at the University of Northern Iowa. Architecture and graphic design, while very different, share certain basic concepts that …
