Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette Jan 1985

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A recent communication theory premise that individuals tend to arrange their thinking metaphorically is the focus of this study. Some communication scholars posit that humans actually think in metaphors. That is, individuals understand something by using one thing to stand for another. Humans communicate by comparing things they understand. Thus, we as humans actually arrange our thinking metaphorically and we understand things or interpret symbols by processing information through a system of metaphoric concepts.

This study attempts to extend metaphoric concept communication theory by examining the broadcast news segment of mass media. This study's general hypothesis is that if individuals …

Behavioral Tendencies Of Known Catalog Buyers, Sandra J. Hendrickson

Graduate Research Papers

According to the Direct Mail/Marketing Association, more than five billion catalogs were mailed in 1982 and mail orders generated approximately 40 billion dollars in consumer sales mostly from catalogs. This is a very large increase compared to earlier years (Time, 1982). The increase in catalog consumers is due to several factors, one being the sophistication of computer systems. Computers have provided catalog films with a method of targeting their mailings to specific groups or types of individuals.

A Proposed Course Of Instruction In Resources For Communications For Saint Ambrose College, Stephen Thomas Fehring

Graduate Research Papers

To effectively convey a message can present a difficult task. Communicating means more than merely getting a message from a sender to a receiver. To be effective, the message must be understood by the receiver on the sender's terms. The instrument used to convey the message is the medium, and the medium is often as important as the content of the message. Today, someone with a message to convey can select from a wide variety of media to aid in the effective delivery of their particular message. Media have been employed as communications aids since the time of Moses. When …

Large sums of money and much research have been concentrated on educational technology, instructional media, and their effects on the learner. While this is important, success in the classroom depends on the face-to-face interaction between students and teachers-communication (Hurt, 1978).

Print legibility is of concern to all seeing, reading individuals. For over 100 years educators, printers, psychologists and ophthalmologists, among others, have investigated a wide number of interrelated factors in print legibility. This research reached its zenith in the 1920's through 1940's, particularly in the voluminous work of M.A. Tinker and D. G. Paterson. There is a large and growing body of knowledge available on what affects the quality of our perceptions of printed typography.

An Innovative Instructional Unit On Manufacturing Concepts And Terminology For Junior High Industrial Arts, James K. Martin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although educators recognize the need for educational experiences that provide students with a basic understanding of the industrial technologies, too often students are not receiving the "hands-on" experiences related to industry. Numerous curriculum programs have been developed to provide the teacher with the necessary instructional materials and also provide students with educational-occupational guidance for the world of work. Yet, many of these programs are not being utilized by industrial arts educators.

Research has shown that most manufacturing curricula range from one to two semesters in length. In order for the teacher to wholly adopt one of these programs, considerable organizational …

Closed-Circuit Television In Industrial Arts, Larry L. Bradshaw Feb 1970

Closed-Circuit Television In Industrial Arts, Larry L. Bradshaw

Graduate Research Papers

The major problem in this study is to find how closed circuit television can be used effectively in Industrial Arts. Several secondary problems are involved with this main problem. The most important of these is teacher presentation. The methodology and mannerisms of a television teacher need to be such that they do not take away from the subject matter to be taught. (Stashoff, 1966, p. 50). The television teacher must be careful to avoid quick distracting movements which would change viewer attention from the learning object to the teacher. This is a special problem because the viewer's attention is confined …
