A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Suicide In Adolescent Literature, Roxanne Fox

Graduate Research Papers

The major purposes of this research were to analyze the portrayal of adolescent suicidal characters in books which adolescents are currently reading and to attempt to determine if this portrayal was realistic in the entire group of books. A panel of experts was used to obtain a sample of ten books. The portrayal of ten characters from the ten books were analyzed using an inventory of nine elements which were derived from a review of the literature currently discussing characteristics of adolescent suicide. The results of this analysis suggested that, for the most part, a realistic and generally balanced portrayal …

An annotated bibliography of biographies was compiled for the career education program in grades 4-6. An attempt was made to locate four biographies for each of the fifteen job clusters designated by the U.S. Office of Education that would be representative of the spectrum of the world of work. A search was made of the Cedar Falls Public Library, Wauzeka Public Schools IMC, and interlibrary loan for biographies. Representative biographies were found for the job clusters of Agribusiness and Natural Resources, Environment, Communication and Media, Fine Arts and Humanities, Health, Public Services, and Recreation and Hospitality. A limited number of …

Alcoholism: The Relapse Dynamic, Jim R. Hoeft Jan 1984

Alcoholism: The Relapse Dynamic, Jim R. Hoeft

Graduate Research Papers

At the time of the discovery and colonization of America, alcohol was firmly entrenched in the society of the Old World. The drunkard was common, particularly in the urban areas. He was treated poorly and often imprisoned for his alcoholic abuses. For the most part, however, he was ignored. (Ewing and Rouse, 1978) Beer and wine was simply transported across the Atlantic to the colonies as a way of life with no special significance. Drunkenness was not tolerated, but even the Puritans drank. (Royce, 1981) The drunkard was a social misfit and a source of pity. (Ewing and Rouse)

Bereavement And Sexual Functioning, Janette Serra-Stanford Jan 1984

Bereavement And Sexual Functioning, Janette Serra-Stanford

Graduate Research Papers

"With the death of a husband, you lose your present; with the death of a parent the past; but with the death of a child you lose your future" (Linzer, 1977, p. 11). There is no more devastating experience for parents than the death of their child. The impact of a child's death is profound because the parent-child relationship is generally regarded as the most reciprocally intense interpersonal relationship (Parker, 1979). A parent's grief is often inconsolable and never ending.

The Effects Of Self-Concept On The Academic Achievement On Elementary School Children, Michael Woodall Jan 1984

The Effects Of Self-Concept On The Academic Achievement On Elementary School Children, Michael Woodall

Graduate Research Papers

From the beginning the human is striving for individuality. The development of the self is intrinsic, and in the early months of life a baby is self-centered and perceives the world through senses governed mainly by basic organic needs. All of us, however, at an early age develop a concept of ourselves as a person. Although this perception of one's self as a person may have certain stable factors, it is in continuous development. Teachers should be aware that within us all there is a power to do our own thing and make our own decisions. Students are constantly changing …

Danger Signals Of Marital Dysfunction, Shelda Jean Hertzke Beener Jan 1984

Danger Signals Of Marital Dysfunction, Shelda Jean Hertzke Beener

Graduate Research Papers

As a fundamental social institution, the American Family has elicited research studies by sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, historians, theologians, political scientists, and economists. Conflicting interpretations and conclusions about the family abound. Even so elementary an expectation as consensus on a definition of family has eluded us.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Middle School Grade Organization On Student Attitudes, Mary Estep Jan 1984

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Middle School Grade Organization On Student Attitudes, Mary Estep

Graduate Research Papers

In 1919, the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools defined the junior high school as a school in which grades 7, 8, and 9 were housed in a separate building. The school had its own teaching staff and administrators. By 1920, approximately 400 junior high schools were in existence and the number was growing. By the mid-fifties there were approximately 6,500 junior high schools in the United States. After 40 years of existence, the deficiencies of the junior high school were notable relative to self-concept. In the late 1950s and early 1960s the middle school emerged as an …

The Conversion Of A Recreational Camp Into A Residential Environment And Educational Learning Center, Ellen Wells Ernst Jan 1984

The Conversion Of A Recreational Camp Into A Residential Environment And Educational Learning Center, Ellen Wells Ernst

Graduate Research Papers

Educational systems in our country have continually faced the challenge of providing educational opportunities for all our children. As well as maintaining a national goal of high educational standards, we have also encouraged an individualistic approach to meeting needs of students. Our educational systems must deal with an extremely wide range of personalities, beliefs, backgrounds, expectations, incomes and abilities. Teachers have a wealth of information available to help them determine students' individual needs and ways of meeting these needs. Students' needs can vary from cognitive-knowledge and moral-motivational needs to personal-emotional and physical needs. Curricula and programs generally attempt to insure …

A Study Of Support Groups Among Iowa School Counselors, Robert Laurence Huber Jan 1984

A Study Of Support Groups Among Iowa School Counselors, Robert Laurence Huber

Graduate Research Papers

Among the helping professions a common concept is the support group. "The social-professional support system (group) affords members ••• opportunities for analyzing problems they encounter and discussing how they feel about these problems. It provides a structure for support and rewards" (Moracco and McFadden, 1980, p. 63). From a review of the literature it is apparent that many support groups both inside and outside the helping professions have been created and utilized. For instance, outside the school counselor's domain, groups such as the Compassionate Friends, Families Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Smokenders, and Widowed Persons have all served as support groups for …

Sexual Attitudes, Beliefs, And Opinions Of Single, Custodial Parents, Lois J. Staff

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to examine the beliefs, attitudes, and opinions of single, custodial parents toward sexual behavior and whether these beliefs, attitudes, and opinions are affected by their roles as single parents. Data for this study were collected by use of the questionnaire survey method. The sample consisted of 103 single, custodial parents receiving services for at least one minor child from a non-profit social service agency. An item analysis was performed on the data collected from the nine-item questionnaire, Sexual Attitudes of Single Parents, relating demographic information and specific attitudes regarding sexual activity. Because of the …

The Nature Of Science, David Roskos-Ewoldsen Jan 1984

The Nature Of Science, David Roskos-Ewoldsen

Iowa Journal of Communication

During the 1920's, the logical positivists attempted to establish a formal system for the advancement of science through the Vienna circle. Basically, the logical positivists argued that the ultimate purpose of science should be the advancement towards final truth. This could be done through scientific investigations that removed theory from observation. Theory served the role of explaining why observations occurred. But the advancement of science came through the removal of theory from these scientific observations. By removing theory from observations, it was assumed that science would be able to advance towards the ultimate goal of truth because these observations, being …

Adolescent Suicide: An Investigation Of Causes And Prevention Measures, Pamela J. Wehrkamp Jan 1984

Adolescent Suicide: An Investigation Of Causes And Prevention Measures, Pamela J. Wehrkamp

Graduate Research Papers

Suicide is not a recent phenomenon among adolescents. Young people have taken their own lives for as long as history has been recorded. It is not coincidence, or by accident, that literature, too, is full of reports of adolescent suicides (Konopka, 198J). Ophelia drowns herself after she is rejected by Hamlet. Romeo kills himself when he believes his beloved to be dead, who in turn kills herself when realizing Romeo had committed suicide.

Performance In Family Narratives: An Ethnographic Study Of Oral Interpretation Components, Cathryn Anne Elmer-Baldner Jan 1984

Performance In Family Narratives: An Ethnographic Study Of Oral Interpretation Components, Cathryn Anne Elmer-Baldner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current folklore researchers have described the telling of family narratives as performance. The purpose of this study was to identify performance behaviors used by a selected narrator of family stories. Using oral interpretation of prose as a performance model, this researcher proposed that behaviors recognized as performance in oral interpretation were also utilized by the family storyteller. This study was designed to collect and analyze video-taped telling of family stories to determine whether the behaviors demonstrated by the family narrator in telling the story were comparable to behaviors associated with oral interpretation performance. This study assumed that (1) oral interpretation …

The Angler’S Angle: An Ethnography Of The Bass Fishermen, Ellen Ray Millhollin Irish Jan 1984

The Angler’S Angle: An Ethnography Of The Bass Fishermen, Ellen Ray Millhollin Irish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Angler's Angle is an ethnographic (cultural description) of the bass fishermen . The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: (1) to present a better understanding of the ethnographic process and its usefulness as a too l within the social sciences, and (2) to illustrate this usefulness by the study of a cultural scene that often goes unnoticed in our Western society. An examination in Chapter 1 on the background of cultural studies (undertaken for the most part to de scribe non-Western societies), sets the tone for the use of ethnography today. Research on sub-cultures within our own society is …

A Self-Concept Improvement Plan For Institutionalized, Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents, David Curtis Canaday

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This project involved a self-concept improvement program for institutionalized, emotionally disturbed adolescents. Subjects were eighteen adolescents between the ages of 13 and 15 who were in a state residential institution for nonpsychotic, emotionally disturbed, acting out adolescents. The subjects were divided into two groups by the institution staff. Both groups completed the Pier-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale and listed positive self-statements as pretest and posttest measures. The experimental group participated in a self-concept improvement program for 12 40 minute sessions twice a week for six weeks. The program consisted of lectures, discussions, and activities designed to facilitate self-understanding, a positive self …
