Black Alcoholism: Etiology, Counseling And Treatment, Charissa L. Gainous
Graduate Research Papers
Alcoholism or alcohol abuse is a multi-dimensional social phenomenon that cannot be easily understood, nor can it be defined in a simplistic or straight forward manner (Roebuck & Kessler, 1972). Any attempt to comprehensively understand the nature of alcoholism among blacks must acknowledge the fact that it has multiple causes, many of which are external to the individual (Watts & Wright, 1983). Any discussion of black alcoholism must acknowledge that certain socioeconomic and environmental factors are key determinants of alcohol problems among blacks (Kane, 1981), from etiology (Helmer, 1975), to prevention (Crisp, 1980), to policy (Yabura, 1975), to treatment and …

Education Experiences For The Elderly: The Investigation Of Obstacles And Opportunities, Maggie Grosvenor Bice
Graduate Research Papers
Education at any age is considered to be a means for enhancing the quality of one's life. The researcher contends that improving the quality of life is a continuous and eternal theme, filtering through the entire life span of any hum an being. Thomas Jefferson was quoted in Ronald Gross' book The New Old as saying "The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government'' (p. 259). If we can assume that education is a means for improving the quality of life, then we can sense the need …

Childhood Obesity, Rhoda Campbell
Childhood Obesity, Rhoda Campbell
Graduate Research Papers
Childhood obesity is a problem that is increasing (Blessing, 1986). According to Dietz, (cited in Blessing, 1986), the number of obese children between the ages of twelve and seventeen increased by 39 percent between 1963 and 1980. Obesity increased for children in the six to eleven year old range by 54 percent during this same time frame. Plimpton (1987) cited a number of studies which indicated that 25 percent of American children are obese and that 80 percent of those obese children will become obese adults. The criteria used to define obesity in various studies range from 15 percent or …

Faculty Morale, Larry Eugene Witt
Faculty Morale, Larry Eugene Witt
Graduate Research Papers
Faculty morale is a phenomenon that has lately been receiving more discussion and research time. Recognized as a powerful force, faculty morale remains difficult to define in precise terms. One point that has been agreed upon by educators is that faculty morale is not unidimensional. Instead faculty morale is multidimensional. A second point of agreement is that faculty morale is vital to all human organizations.

Transition Effects On Preadolescents And Implications For Counselors, David Thomas Peterson
Transition Effects On Preadolescents And Implications For Counselors, David Thomas Peterson
Graduate Research Papers
During the past several years the idea of predictable life transitions as playing a very significant part in both the development and the well being of individuals has gained wide acceptance. The purpose of this study will be to survey existing literature relating to the transitional period which usually occurs during the preadolescent years (ages 9-13). A secondary focus will be upon implications for the school counselor who works with this age group. Transitions and transitional periods refer to changes or interruptions in an individual's, family's, and/or institution's pattern of development which serve to connect earlier and later ways of …

Current Effects And Consequences Of Tracking, Beverly A. Oppold-Blessman
Current Effects And Consequences Of Tracking, Beverly A. Oppold-Blessman
Graduate Research Papers
Tracking and ability grouping have long been controversial topics in American education. Researchers have been collecting data on their effects for almost three quarters of a century and still disagree about their merits (Kulik and Kulik, 1987). Educators and policy makers have argued about the effects of ability grouping and tracking for an even longer time. Reviewers of research cannot reach an agreement about the value of homogeneous grouping, yet in 1985 it was determined that in 77 percent of all American schools, ability grouping and tracking were practiced to some degree (Dawson, 1987).

In 1840 Elizabeth Caty Stanton attended the World's Anti-Slavery Convention in London, England. Although women were members of the society their delegations were not seated on the convention floor. This experience led her along with Lucretia Mott eight years later to organize the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York to remedy the oppression she saw everywhere and to improve the legal status of women.

The Theological Experience Of The Color Purple, Dave Cushing
The Theological Experience Of The Color Purple, Dave Cushing
Draftings In
At first glance, most readers would not recognize Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple as a typical example of theological writing. After all, theological truths are usually revealed in ancient, often puzzling manuscripts which are neatly packaged and interpreted for us by doctrinal experts. Even some Sunday sermons take on an impersonal and otherworldly irrelevance which is a long way removed from the everyday earthiness of Walker's novel. But whether they have been exposed to theology in its strictest, formal sense or not, many readers will finish The Color Purple with the suspicion that they have somehow been exposed to …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science was first published in 1887 and has continued yearly except for 1905. Business reports and contributed papers constituted most of the volumes. Publication of symposia has become more popular in recent years. Financial and mechanical problems have caused strains at rimes, but these have largely been solved after publication became independent of the State Printer.

Educating For The Future: An Examination Of Global Education, Jean K. Seeland

Comissioned [sic]by President Carter, the Global 2000 Report To The President (1982), stated that for hundreds of millions of the desperately poor, the outlook for food and other necessities of life will be no better in the year 2000. For many it will be worse. Life for most people on earth will be more precarious in 2000 than it is now unless nations of the world act decisively to alter current trends. The Middle School: A Review Of Current Literature, Lindy K. Daters
Graduate Research Papers
Education in the United States has presented many patterns of school organization. Separate junior and senior high schools were suggested in the early 1900 1 s, but the grade levels and ages for distinguishing these divisions were unclear (Wiles & Bondi, 1981). The junior high was designed to bridge the gap between elementary and high school. It usually included grades 7-8-9. An alternative to the junior high school, the middle school, began to emerge in the late 1950 1 s. The middle school was designed to facilitate grades 6-7-8. Its development was primarily to relieve overcrowding and to provide an …
Improving Reading Comprehension Through Text Structure Instruction, Betty J. Santema
Improving Reading Comprehension Through Text Structure Instruction, Betty J. Santema
Graduate Research Papers
Educators in secondary schools have become increasingly concerned about the levels of reading comprehension of their students. This concern has stemmed in part from growing public awareness of the levels of illiteracy in the United States and the belief that future society will require an increasingly literate people. Educators at all levels who seek ways to help their students learn from the printed materials available in their curricula have been hindered in the past in two main areas (Devine, 1986).
The Teaching Of Elementary Social Studies: A Classroom Teacher's Perspective, Kristi A. Wernimont
The Teaching Of Elementary Social Studies: A Classroom Teacher's Perspective, Kristi A. Wernimont
Graduate Research Papers
Elementary teachers have long sought answers to ease the frustration of teaching elementary social studies. It is a subject with great potential for integration with other subject areas, yet is restricted by textbook and classroom management problems, with ambiguous local, state, and national goals. The result is that programs range from a few individually developed, enlightening models to the notion that social studies is an insignificant subject in the elementary curriculum and thus needs little attention. The problem and confusion still exist--how should the subject of social studies be taught in the elementary classroom? Is the current practice of one …
Stressors Identified By Rn/Bsn Adult Learners Returning To College To Obtain A Baccalaureate Degree In Nursing, Dorothy Nahnsen
Stressors Identified By Rn/Bsn Adult Learners Returning To College To Obtain A Baccalaureate Degree In Nursing, Dorothy Nahnsen
Graduate Research Papers
The current controversy over the type of formal education needed by registered nurses has resulted in an influx of associate-degree and diploma-prepared nurses into baccalaureate nursing programs. This study presented the results of a survey used to identify stressors that RN/BSN adult learners encountered when returning to school to earn a baccalaureate degree. The respondents included 60 registered nurses from both associate degree and diploma programs who had either graduated or were currently enrolled in a BSN completion program at a small private mid-western college. The results of the survey substantiated the presence of stressors during the educational experience but …
