Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton Jan 1989

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Ninety-nine species of plant-parasitic nematodes are recorded from Iowa. Twenty-seven are new state records. Most samples were collected from around maize or from prairies or woodlands. Similarity (Sorensen's index) of species was highest for the maize-prairie habitats (0.49), compared with maize-woodlands (0. 23), or prairie-woodland (0. 3 7) habitats. Nematode communities were most diverse in prairies with a Shannon-Weiner index (H') of 2.74, compared with 1.65 and 1.07 for woodlands and maize habitats, respectively. Evenness of species (J') was 0.41, 0.78, and 0.48 for maize, prairies, and woodlands, respectively.

The Demands Of Dual Roles For Student-Athletes, Kathleen M. Peters Jan 1989

The Demands Of Dual Roles For Student-Athletes, Kathleen M. Peters

Graduate Research Papers

Since the beginning of intercollegiate athletics in this country, there has been controversy regarding the role they play in the total program of higher education. More recently, attention has been focused on the commercial enterprise college athletics have become. Both aspects of the controversy have affected the student-athlete. Frey (1982) stated that ever since the first intercollegiate event 1n 1852, a crew race between Harvard and Yale, "the history of intercollegiate athletics has been one of balancing the demands of external :interests (e.g., alumni/booster, entertainment and promotion) with those of the internal, educational constituency who asked questions about institutional control" …

The Right To Be Childfree, Mary Fraune-Winter

Graduate Research Papers

The number of couples who have voluntarily chosen not to have children has doubled in the last few decades, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, Census Bureau, (Kantrowitz, 1985). In 1960 the number of married women between the ages of twenty-five and twenty-nine who were childless totalled [sic] thirteen percent, which averaged one out of ten women (Kantrowitz, 1985). In 1985 the number of married women in the same age group who chose not to have children was twenty-nine percent, which averaged one out of every four women (Kantrowitz, 1985). The Association Between Athletic Participation And Academic Achievement And Aspirations, Greg Detimmerman

Among these are sportsmanship, discipline, cooperation, persistence, competition, character and moral development.

Collectivism And Individualism In A Professionalism Study Of Public Relations Practitioners And Journalists, Steven L. Jones Jan 1989

Collectivism And Individualism In A Professionalism Study Of Public Relations Practitioners And Journalists, Steven L. Jones

Graduate Research Papers

The adversarial relationship between journalists and public relations practitioners is nothing new. No matter in what era or in what context, there has always been friction between those who mind the media gates and those whose livelihoods depend upon getting information disseminated. It is inherent, it is argued here, for cultural discourse of public relations practitioners and journalists. Several studies examined the adversarial relationship, and most had consistent findings -- the two occupations view each other quite differently. Stegall and Sanders (1986) indicated that journalists see their roles and the roles of public relations practitioners as distinctly different. They wrote …

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon Jan 1989

Analysis Of Corporate Culture And Community Relations: A Case Study Of Ibm, Lisa V. Sukovaty-Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

The basis for study of corporate culture grew from prior sociological and anthropological research. Etzioni (1964) found organizations which incorporate human resource technique in establishing goals were least likely to alienate their employees and were likely to produce desired responses. Etzioni's method for determining an organization's goals was through "inspection of interviews, minutes from board meetings, organization documents, division of labor, and allocation of resources (1964, p.6)." The purpose of cultures as defined by Etzioni should be to "provide a supportive setting for developing modern organizations and theme worldliness (1964, p.108-109)."

Punishment To Discipline: Evolution Or An Alternative Method, Gwendolyn Johnson Jan 1989

Punishment To Discipline: Evolution Or An Alternative Method, Gwendolyn Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

Walter Dick and Lou Carey (1985) wrote about the two different views of the role of the teacher. The role of the teacher is to effectively instruct students. No instructor would deny that the tools of the trade fall into the categories of preparation, presentation and evaluation. The role of the student is to learn what is being taught. Traditionally the burden of the effectiveness of this relationship has been placed on the instructor. However this view is changing because, it doesn't matter how great a subject matter expert a teacher becomes or how well they've mastered their educational technique …

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept: A Construct Validity Study, Tracy A. Randall Jan 1989

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept: A Construct Validity Study, Tracy A. Randall

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Researchers tend to agree that self-concept has an influence on the total development of the child (Briggs, 1970). Stanton (1982) suggests that educators should find ways to encourage internality in students' control orientations. Extensive research has been conducted on the constructs of locus of control and self-concept. Some research studies report interesting results concerning a dimension of self-concept--academic self-concept or self-concept as a learner--(Purkey, Raheim, & Cage, 1983; Purkey, 1970; Benner, Frey, & Gilberts, 1983).

The purpose of this study was to explore the construct independence between locus of control and learner self-concept in students at the tenth grade level. …
