Human Service organizations face various challenges to providing services for their clients. Several studies pointed out the benefits of inter-organizational collaboration and youth participation. Both concepts share some common beliefs and values. They may have a role in contributing to solutions and improvements. The purpose of this study was to examine if and how youth service organizations in Hong Kong involve young people in inter-organizational collaboration. The study was designed to answer: (a) What are the characteristics of inter-organizational collaborations? (b) Is youth participation being included in inter-organizational collaboration? Embracing The Imaginary Good Mother: Narratives Of Love And Violence From Women Who Killed Their Children, Barbara Barnett Jan 2006

Embracing The Imaginary Good Mother: Narratives Of Love And Violence From Women Who Killed Their Children, Barbara Barnett

Iowa Journal of Communication

Western culture positions motherhood as a divine calling, and this construct makes the notion that women would harm her children seem baffling and unnatural. This qualitative analysis of news articles seeks to understand maternal violence by analyzing narratives told by women who killed their children. Findings reveal that women who harmed their children portrayed themselves as loving and protective and dismissed their violent actions as accidents or missteps. Women understood society's expectation that mothers be all-loving and all-knowing, and internalized the good mother myth, constructing stories of themselves as caring and nurturing even when their actions were hurtful and destructive.

The Social Construction Of Wife Beating In Political Discourse, Gretchen Arnold Jan 2006

The Social Construction Of Wife Beating In Political Discourse, Gretchen Arnold

Iowa Journal of Communication

The issue of wife beating was a common topic of political discourse in 19th century America. After the turn-of-the-century, however, the issue dropped from public view and resurfaced only when contemporary feminists reframed the problem. My paper explains why this issue disappeared from, and then returned to, the political scene. I use contemporary frame analysis to analyze the specific frames to interpret wife beating that appeared in political discourse and tie them to cultural and institutional developments as well as to the work of specific social movements. in particular, I argue that the moral significance each frame gave -or denied- …

The Honey Creek Member: A New Holocene Alluvial Stratigraphic Unit In The Midwest, Jeremy S. Dillon, Rolfe D. Mandel Jan 2006

The Honey Creek Member: A New Holocene Alluvial Stratigraphic Unit In The Midwest, Jeremy S. Dillon, Rolfe D. Mandel

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This paper describes the type locality and type section for the Honey Creek Member, a stratigraphic unit first recognized in the Honey Creek drainage in southeastern Nebraska. The alluvial chronology for Honey Creek basin is similar to the regional chronology of streams in the Midwest, and all of the formal members of the DeForest Formation occur in the basin. However, the lithology of one unit, the Honey Creek Member, does not correlate with any of the formally recognized members of the DeForest Formation. The Honey Creek Member is composed of grayish brown silt loam overbank facies coarsening downward to a …

The Depth And Breadth Of Google Scholar: An Empirical Study, Chris F. Neuhaus, Ellen E. Neuhaus, Clint Wrede, Alan Asher

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

The introduction of Google Scholar in November 2004 was accompanied by fanfare, skepticism, and numerous questions about the scope and coverage of this database. Nearly one year after its inception, many of these questions remain unanswered. This study compares the contents of 47 different databases with that of Google Scholar. Included in this investigation are tests for Google Scholar publication date and publication language bias, as well as a study of upload frequency. Tests show Google Scholar’s current strengths to be coverage of science and medical databases, open access databases, and single publisher databases. Current weaknesses include lack of coverage …

The Authority Of Traditional Islamic Leaders: A Sociological Study Of Kyai's Authority In Pesantren, Achmad Zainal Arifin Jan 2006

The Authority Of Traditional Islamic Leaders: A Sociological Study Of Kyai's Authority In Pesantren, Achmad Zainal Arifin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The 9/11 tragedy, followed by the War on Terror policy have brought serious impacts on a study of Islam, especially regarding the issue of terrorism. An absolute authority of traditional Islamic leaders is often blamed as a source of religious violence. Their charismatic leaderships are considered having threats for the rest of the world. Imbalanced information provided by the Western media about Islam neglected a peaceful side of lslamic teachings. Through sociological perspective, especially the concept of authority from Weber, this thesis provides an alternative description of the authority of traditional Islamic leader in Indonesia, so-called kyai, the owner …

Educational Ideas And The Future Of Our Society, Mallory Sue Smiens Jan 2006

Educational Ideas And The Future Of Our Society, Mallory Sue Smiens

Honors Program Theses

Thus, the study of children and educational theories provided a rationale for the present study. Further discussions led to the belief that the questions raised by the author would best be answered from a sociological perspective. Because sociology is often employed to study people and how they interact with one another, it provides a meaningful discipline to weigh the teacher preparation ideas and practices against in order to determine their wider consequences for individuals. Therefore, a study of basic sociology was undertaken.

Gender Socialization Through Children’S Literature: Body And Beauty Image, Meera Basnet Jan 2006

Gender Socialization Through Children’S Literature: Body And Beauty Image, Meera Basnet

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This exploratory study centers on a small number of children's books to examine how female characters are portrayed, and to consider the question, "Do gendered images of female characters exist visually in children's literature? I selected 5 books from the time periods of 1980 to 1989 and from 2000 to 2005. These books were written by U.S. authors and are directed at children aged 5-8 years. Findings are tentative, based upon the limited number of books included in the study, but patterns indicate that children's literature portrays gender somewhat stereotypically. I include body structure, dress, beauty and decoration, and movement …

Bible Beater/Bra Burner: Liminal Experiences Of Christian & Feminist Identity, Jennifer Lynn Freitag

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Bible Beater/Bra Burner: Liminal Experiences of Christian & Feminist identity explores the relationship between Christian and feminist identity. Through ethnography and ethnodrama, this project examines the ways fifteen women in eastern Iowa negotiate the relationship between Christianity and feminism in their daily lives, the ways language functions for and against these performances of self, and the ways staged performance can be used to approach these specific issues of women's identity. The ethnodrama written from interview and autoethnographic data, Bible Beater/Bra Burner, was performed in the University of Northern Iowa Interpreters Theatre on April 20-22, 2006. Bible Beater/Bra Burner employs creative …

Objectified Body Consciousness And Eating Attitudes And Behaviors Of College Females And Males, Danielle Jo Eastman Jan 2006

Objectified Body Consciousness And Eating Attitudes And Behaviors Of College Females And Males, Danielle Jo Eastman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the relationship between objectified body consciousness (OBC) and eating attitudes and behaviors of both female and male students at a Midwestern university. Based on a survey completed by 369 females and 181 males, relationships between OBC as measured by the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (OBCS; McKinley, 1995) and eating attitudes and behaviors as measured by the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26; Garner, Olmstead, Bohr, & Garfinkle, 1982) were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlations. The OBCS consists of three subscales representing body surveillance, body shame, and control beliefs. A higher score on the EA T-26 indicates an increased likelihood …

Voicing Women's Resistance Within Religious Studies: An Interrogation Of Rational Choice Theory, Anne E. Tedore Jan 2006

Voicing Women's Resistance Within Religious Studies: An Interrogation Of Rational Choice Theory, Anne E. Tedore

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

While women are generally oppressed within hierarchical and patriarchal religious traditions, researchers continue to detail the ways women negotiate power and construct meaning in religion. Within this thesis I interrogate the use of rational choice theory, a prominent theory utilized to describe religious behavior, as a framework for the analysis of women's religious experience and agency. I compare two texts, Brenda Brasher's Godly Women: Fundamentalism and Female Power and Jeanette Rodriguez's Our Lady of Guadalupe: Faith and Empowerment Among Mexican-American Women, in order to illustrate the inadequacies of rational choice theory in describing the religious experiences of marginalized women. I …
