Instructional Techniques For Social Work Education, Fred H. Besthorn

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This article briefly examines the historical and cultural context of Norwegian ecological consciousness and demonstrates the viability of integrating its Deep Ecological awareness into social work curriculum and education for practice. It shall address the most salient and practical elements that Norwegian views of nature and conceptualizations of Deep Ecology have brought to global, environmental activism and emerging conceptualization of earth-based awareness. It is designed to assist educators in helping their students to become more fully cognizant that individual well-being and relationships with human and other-than-human beings is deeply influenced by internalized experiences of the natural world.

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson Mar 2006

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In his book, What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy, James Paul Gee argues that “the power of video games, for good or ill, resides in the ways in which they meld learning and identity…,” and he cautions that this power can be used to miscommunicate wrong ideology (such as might be found in a neo-Nazi game that encourages the player to conduct ethnic cleansing (199). However, Gee advocates “understanding the ‘play’ of identities and perspectives as they work for and against each other in the world, now and throughout history” (200). The art – …

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair Mar 2006

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Teaching about the Middle Ages in French culture or literature courses is always an enlightening experience to me because of the richness of symbols, events, and starting points occurring during this time period. Very often, when thinking about the Middle Ages, Christianity, chivalry, and nobility come to mind, all values still of high importance in contemporary Western societies. However, medieval culture presents itself with an array of other behaviors and values, some of which may today be considered as offensive and even sometimes “alienating”: primitive, barbaric, or even animalistic forms of behavior.

Children Of Incarcerated Mothers, Kisha Smith Jan 2006

Children Of Incarcerated Mothers, Kisha Smith

Graduate Research Papers

Since 1990, the female prison population has increased significantly. In the United States, there are 721,500 incarcerated individuals who are parents of minor children. Many of these parents are mothers who experienced drug use and came from single parent families living in poverty.

Since 60 percent of children are primarily cared for by their mother, maternal incarceration results in many children being removed from their homes, resulting in internal and external problems as well as academic concerns. In addition, this situation can lead to emotional issues, such as grief and loss, and problems related to social adjustment. Consequently, children of …

The Effects Of Divorce In A Society With Ever-Changing Family Structures, Rebecca L. Ahlstrom Jan 2006

The Effects Of Divorce In A Society With Ever-Changing Family Structures, Rebecca L. Ahlstrom

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce rates have doubled since the 1970s, this has influenced both the structure and the impact of the family. It is imperative not to overlook the large and growing population of children affected by divorce. This paper will discuss the differences of important variables involved, such as age, gender and cultural background. In addition, it will discuss in detail outreach ideas and intervention strategies including small groups, mentoring programs, and bibliotherapy that have all been effective in supporting these children and their families in this crucial change of family structure. Children in single parent and blended families are considered "at-risk" …

Cyberbullying: A Workshop For Parents, Erin Jackson Jan 2006

Cyberbullying: A Workshop For Parents, Erin Jackson

Graduate Research Papers

There are many advantages to the new technology that is flooding the American way of life. However, with the good also comes the bad. Cyber-bullying is one example of the negative side of our ever-changing technology. Cyber-bullying can be very devastating for all people involved (Campbell, 2005). it affects the victim, the bully, family, and friends. With cyber-bullying on the rise, even more children will be affected in the future and the effects of this type of bullying will become more widespread.

Mediators' Face Dimensions: A Factor Analysis, Sook-Young Lee Jan 2006

Mediators' Face Dimensions: A Factor Analysis, Sook-Young Lee

Iowa Journal of Communication

The purpose of this study is to explore dimensions of face-concerns of an informal mediator in the intercultural setting. Ting-Toomey and her colleagues' definition and dimensions of face-concerns are used as a framework to create a scale for face-concerns of a mediator who is to handle an intercultural conflict episode. Data were collected from 207 participants from the U.S., China, Taiwan, and South Korea. The Principle Component Analysis was conducted to discover the dimensions of face-concerns. The results both support and challenge current theoretical frameworks for face-concerns. Practical and methodological implications are discussed.

An Investigation Of The Under-Representation Of African American Athletic Directors In Division Ia Intercollegiate Athletics, William T. Freeney Jan 2006

An Investigation Of The Under-Representation Of African American Athletic Directors In Division Ia Intercollegiate Athletics, William T. Freeney

Graduate Research Papers

The position of athletic directors is one of the top administrative posts within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). In a perfect world, these positions would be opened to all qualified persons. In reality, however, there are major barriers for African American athletic administrators to overcome before they can join the ranks of Athletic Director. Barriers, such as bias hiring practices and policies, exist in intercollegiate athletics that have directly or indirectly resulted in an under-representation of African American athletic administrators. These barriers prohibit African American athletic administrators from advancing into the most senior role in intercollegiate administrative positions, the …

Review And Recommendations For The City Of Cedar Falls, Iowa Regarding Phase Ii Compliance With The Federal Clean Water Act: The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, Rebecca Kauten Jan 2006

Review And Recommendations For The City Of Cedar Falls, Iowa Regarding Phase Ii Compliance With The Federal Clean Water Act: The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, Rebecca Kauten

Graduate Research Papers

As the United States developed into an urban and industrial economy, the physical landscape of the nation changed. Wilderness gave weigh to civilization and, over time, the urban lifestyle evolved. Since then, unpaved right-of-way has become impervious skeletons that hold modern cities intact. Lined with buildings and rooftops, parking lots and driveways, water can only be directed from above ground to other locations when it rains or snows. This paper is a literature review of the history of stormwater management practices, description of the Phase II program within the Federal Clean Water Act, and a descriptive analysis of structural and …

The Continuing War On Academic Freedom And Tenure: Will They Survive?, Keith T. Hardeman Jan 2006

The Continuing War On Academic Freedom And Tenure: Will They Survive?, Keith T. Hardeman

Iowa Journal of Communication

Since knowledge is not a product that can be shaped and manufactured to meet the spiritual or political needs of various customers, academic freedom must exist to protect faculty in the ultimate search for and dissemination of truth. Just as freedom of speech is safeguarded by the Constitution, academic freedom must be defended by tenure. This article explains the need for tenure by addressing its more popular fallacies and some of the current attempts to erode its strength.

The Role Of Emotional Intelligence In Counseling Bilingual Latinos Who Avoid Expressing Or Experiencing Emotions, Mayra A. Montalvo Jan 2006

The Role Of Emotional Intelligence In Counseling Bilingual Latinos Who Avoid Expressing Or Experiencing Emotions, Mayra A. Montalvo

Graduate Research Papers

A review of literature on the role of emotional intelligence in counseling bilingual Latinos who avoid expressing or experiencing emotions reveals that language, gender, ethnicity, religion, and family structure influence emotion usage. The two constructs, emotional intelligence and multiculturalism, offered a framework for understanding cultural and contextual factors in cross-cultural client-counselor relationships, redefining resistance from a multicultural standpoint, and possible therapeutic interventions that take into account the cultural influences and beliefs of Latinos on the mental health system.

The Importance Of Ehealth In The Education Of Underserved Populations, Shanel L. Winfield Jan 2006

The Importance Of Ehealth In The Education Of Underserved Populations, Shanel L. Winfield

Graduate Research Papers

The use of the Internet or the World Wide Web for educational purposes is widespread and rapidly growing. It is only natural that, in response to this rapid growth, its usage expands into the field of medicine, particularly eHealth. But as the nature of how the Internet is being used in health and medicine increases, there is a large segment of the population being left behind because of lack of access. This lack of access is in response to economic barriers, political barriers, social-cultural barriers and social-economic barriers. Issues of literacy, content, and language also play a role in the …

Mom's The Word: The Portrayal Of The Single Mother/Son Relationship In Children's Literature, Sheryl Renee Haveman Jan 2006

Mom's The Word: The Portrayal Of The Single Mother/Son Relationship In Children's Literature, Sheryl Renee Haveman

Graduate Research Papers

Our culture is abounding with boys being raised solely by their mother. Awareness of the impact of divorce and the importance of a male role model for a young boy has increased and is represented in literature. Authors of children's literature have been continuing the tradition of dealing openly and honestly with many society issues. Despite the large number of books that include single mothers and their sons, the researcher questioned whether or not children's picture and chapter books were accurately portraying the dynamics involved with the single mother/son relationship.

The purpose of this study was to examine children's literature …

Face-To-Face Training Versus Web-Based Training : Which Instructional Approach Is Better?, Nichola J. Lewis Jan 2006

Face-To-Face Training Versus Web-Based Training : Which Instructional Approach Is Better?, Nichola J. Lewis

Graduate Research Papers

Training skilled employees is essential in determining the success of an organization. Determining which type of training, whether face-to-face or web-based, will best serve the needs of an organization remains an issue. This literature review will attempt to answer the questions, "How do adults learn; what is web-based training; what is face-to-face training; is web-based training more effective than face-to-face training; and can web-based training and face-to-face training be combined?"

An Investigation Of The General Population's Understanding Of Forgiveness, Wen-Chuan Rita Chang

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate the general population's understanding and views of forgiveness and to examine if gender was a factor related to one's understanding of forgiveness and motivation to forgive. In this study, structured interviews were administered which allowed a focus on the personal views and experiences of forgiveness and descriptive statistics were used to explain the common patterns in responses among the participants. Forty-nine participants, ranging in ages from 15 to 54, were selected to be interviewed on their views and practice of forgiveness. Of the 49 participants, 15 were males and 34 were females.

Addressing Diversity: A Case Study Of Teacher Educators' Views And Instructional Practices At A Midwestern University, Alina Slapac Jan 2006

Addressing Diversity: A Case Study Of Teacher Educators' Views And Instructional Practices At A Midwestern University, Alina Slapac

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is well documented that while the student population is becoming more and more diverse, the teacher population remains mostly white, female, monolingual, and monocultural (Banks, 2001a; Darling-Hammond, 2002; Nieto, 2000a). Consequently, teacher education programs have the important role of addressing diversity throughout curriculum, field experiences and faculty recruitment.

The purpose of this qualitative research was to gain more understanding, from the teacher educators' perspectives, about the way diversity is being addressed at a Midwestern university by examining teacher educators' various methods of instruction, and their course materials, which focus on diversity issues and the needs of diverse learners. The …

The Relationship Of The Co-Curriculum With Student Faith Development: Challenge And Support At A College Of The Church, Eric Bradley Braun

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Luther College (Decorah, IA) is a liberal arts school of 2550 students that has been affiliated with the Evangelical Church in America since 1861. Its mission includes a higher calling to help students connect faith with learning, freedom with responsibility, and life's work with service. The college co-curriculum includes more than seventy campus organizations, seventeen intercollegiate sports, thirteen music ensembles, a comprehensive work-study program, and numerous community connections. Amidst these chaotic activities and events, relationships, and challenging learning environments, student faith is developing. Administrators at the college do not seem to understand the significant relationship of the co-curriculum with student …

The Moral Of The Story, Katie Beth Jones Jan 2006

The Moral Of The Story, Katie Beth Jones

Honors Program Theses

This thesis is written from the perspective of an elementary education major in anticipation of graduating and entering the teaching profession. Realizing the immense responsibility teachers bear for the academic and moral development of the next generation of Americans, she has researched the roles of various institutions in transmitting norms and values from one generation to the next and examined what gaps may exist in that transmission. Concerned for the future of American society, she set out to discover sources of what may be the demise of our culture and what role schools can and should have in the moral …

Reforming Rhetoric: Gender Equity, The American Association Of University Women, And The New White, Kim Golombisky Jan 2006

Reforming Rhetoric: Gender Equity, The American Association Of University Women, And The New White, Kim Golombisky

Iowa Journal of Communication

During the 1990s, the American Association of University Women tried to put gender equity back onto a U.S. education agenda that had rolled back equity programming during the 1980s and turned toward standards and testing in the 1990s. Conservatives labeled the AA UW radical feminists and argued black schoolboys represent the greatest at-a-risk student population, a logic that prioritized race over gender and boys over girls. Nonwhite non-Anglo women criticized the AA UW for glossing over differences among girls and women. In its 1998 Gender Gaps, the AA UW wrote a rhetorical alliance with its critics on the right and …

Augmentation Of Reading Across The Curriculum, Student Exploration Of Literature, And Library Collection Development Through The Compilation Of A Comprehensive Annotated Bibliography Of High School Content Area Literature, Patricia J. Erkenbrack Jan 2006

Augmentation Of Reading Across The Curriculum, Student Exploration Of Literature, And Library Collection Development Through The Compilation Of A Comprehensive Annotated Bibliography Of High School Content Area Literature, Patricia J. Erkenbrack

Graduate Research Papers

The most current National Center for Education Statistics data are that average reading scores of American adolescents have been essentially stagnant since 1971, generating concern about the ability of high school graduates to meet the literacy challenges of the twenty-first century. A 1925 study conducted by the National Committee on Reading formulated the concept of literature-based content area reading instruction, in which the substantive involvement of school librarians was seen as crucial for success. No recent research on the integration ofliterature into content areas at the high school level is available, but the effectiveness of such a strategy is implied …

Gender And Policing : An Analysis Of Police Departments As Gendered Organizations, Kimberly L. Seavey Jan 2006

Gender And Policing : An Analysis Of Police Departments As Gendered Organizations, Kimberly L. Seavey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Drawing upon eighteen semi-structured, in-depth interviews with women officers from three municipal police departments, I examine the work lives these women experience and how their work lives are influenced by gender. I explore three categories in this analysis: (1) work environment; (2) social relations of work; and (3) occupational identity and role conflict. The analysis is based on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and archival data consisting of documents gathered from all three police departments. The study is guided by Joan Acker' s (1990, 1992a, 1992b) "theory of gendered organizations." I apply Acker's (1990, 1992a, 1992b) theory to determine if the …
